15-acetyloxy-11,16,16,-trimethyl-9-oxo-prosta-5,13-dien-1-oic acid and lower alkyl esters thereof useful as anti-secretory agents for preventing hyperacidity in the stomach and as an anti-ulcer agent, and compositions and methods for using said compounds.

15-Acetyl-prostaglandins

Orally administrable pharmaceutical compositions in the form of a soft gelatin capsule containing a prostaglandin and ascorbic acid or ascorbyl palmitate which are dissolved in polyethylene glycol or polyoxyethylene sorbitan esters of fatty acids or combinations thereof. The compositions are especially useful in improving bioavailability and stability of the prostaglandin in pharmaceutical dosage form.

Prostaglandin compositions

An improved diagnostic method for detecting malabsorption comprising the oral ingestion by the patient of an effective amount of N-(2-aminoethyl)-glycine (Aeg), collecting the urine for eight hours post ingestion, then detecting the amount of N-(2-aminoethyl)-glycine in the urine by contacting the urine with an indicator substance which indicates the presence of N-(2-aminoethyl)-glycine. Suitable reagents include nihydrin, 2-methoxy-2,4-diphenyl-3-(2H)-furanone, o-phthalaldehyde and fluorescamine, with fluorescamine being preferred. The determination can be made quantitative by treating the urine with a source of active chlorine or bromine prior to contact with the indicator.

Diagnostic test for malabsorption

Novel somatostatin analogues containing one or more aminoethylglycyl residues at the amino and/or carboxyl terminus or in the ring position are described. The compounds are potent and long lasting inhibitors of gastric acid secretion.

Aminoethylglycine containing polypeptides

The increase of bile flow and the decrease of the levels of lipids such as cholesterol and triglyceride is obtained in biological systems by utilizing specific 3 .alpha.,12.alpha. dihydroxy cholane derivatives and the non-toxic salts of these derivatives.

Method of increasing bile flow and decreasing lipid levels

The compound 5(3,12-dihydroxy-pregnan-20-yl)-pentanoic acid and 7-(3,12-dihydroxy-pregnan-20-yl)-heptanoic acid as well as ester and unsaturated derivatives thereof useful for decreasing the level of lipids such as cholesterol and triglycerides.

Taurine and glycine derivatives of nor or bisnorcholanic acid or etiocholanic acid which are useful in increasing bile flow or decreasing lipid levels and their method of production from deoxycholic acid, including intermediates thereof.
