By the geometry of a triangular extrusion with reflective sides, only a small portion of the light is absorbed and most of the light is reflected into the canopy. An example shade and shadow minimizing extrusion luminaire for a plant canopy includes a reflector and a housing. The housing has two triangular shape ends The triangular shape is defined by angles selected to redirect light impinging on a face of the triangular shape ends of the housing, in both a downward and horizontal direction into the plant canopy without blocking or sacrificing the light.

One embodiment of a load control system comprises at least two triac devices connected in parallel to a load, the at least two triac devices operable to deliver current to the load. At least one driver circuit is linked to the at least two triac devices. An exemplary remote control system comprises a wireless interface configured to receive instructions from a wireless station in a building automation network. A ballast table identifying ballast control points is stored in computer-readable memory. A processor operatively associated with the wireless interface and the ballast table uses the ballast table to generate electronic control signals identifying ballast control points corresponding to the instructions received at the wireless interface.

A networkable power controller includes a mode selector for selectively conducting of a plurality of input signals to an output of the networkable power controller, where the input signals and the output signals satisfy the same signaling protocol. The networkable power controller may be networked with other networkable power controllers, lighting ballasts and other building automation control devices, and user-controlled voltage selectors to provide a lighting control network. A power controller may include a mode selector that may be used in combination with other control devices or components, including a rotary dimmer control, a digital slide dimmer control, a demand load shedder component, a photometer component, and a communications interface. The communications interface allows digital control of the networkable power controller.

A control system for controlling the illumination intensity of a gas discharge lamp to provide only necessary illumination and thus conserve power consumption. The control system has a daylight harvester which produces a control signal related to the available light within a given area. The control signal is conducted to a voltage controlled oscillator which, in turn conducts an oscillating signal to a frequency controlled ballast transformer that effectively drives the gas discharge lamp controlling the illumination intensity and energy consumption. The control system alternatively comprises a remote signal receiver for use alone or in addition to the daylight harvester. The control system with a remote signal receiver is controllable using a remote signal generator such as laser pointer. The remote signal receiver allows the user to control the illumination intensity of a gas discharge lamp from the area being illuminated.

A frequency dependent controller utilizes a loosely coupled transformer, adapted to change the operating characteristics of the transformer by varying its operating frequency in accordance with the requirements of a load to be supplied with power. The controller is particularly adapted for dimming and adjustably controlling a set of gas discharge lamps such as fluorescent lamps, connected in parallel such that failure of one lamp does not affect operation of the other lamps in the set.

If the transformer is operated over a frequency range by the controller, the maximum current and other operating characteristics of the transformer are a function of both the magnetic shunt and its then current operating frequency. Frequency control of a loosely coupled transformer permits precision electronic regulation of the transformer's operating characteristics and is suitable for control of a variety of devices, such as gas discharge lamps, DC to DC converters, AC to DC power and high voltage supplies, motor control and variable heaters.

A gentle start electronic ballast operates one or more gas discharge lamps in a dimming or non-dimming mode. The ballast has a power supply section and a frequency-dependent control section. A power supply section includes a rectifier circuit, a power boosting circuit, a power factor compensation chip for the ballast, a control circuit to insure startup of the power factor compensation chip on the first haversine produced by the rectifier circuit and an in-rush current limiter that is removed from the operational circuit path of the ballast by the control circuit once the power factor compensation chip is rendered self-sustaining by the power boosting circuit. The control section receives power from the power supply section creating a reference voltage that is applied to a voltage controlled oscillator to develop an output signal the frequency of which varies from an initial high value to a lower operating value through a range that corresponds with the permissible range of power to be applied to the lamps and separately to their filaments as determined by the values of elements employed in a frequency adjustment circuit that is coupled to the oscillator. The output oscillator's signal is thereafter applied to a current limiting, shunted transformer having an air gap and turns ratio that is selected in accordance with the load profile and operating characteristics of the gas discharge lamps to ultimately apply power to the lamps as a function of the frequency of the signal applied to the transformer.

A method for producing a warning of the existence of low-level wind shear and an aircraftborne system for performing the method utilizes measured values of airspeed and temperature, to determine a temperature based hazard factor relating to the existence of a wind shear threat to the aircraft and to issue a warning whenever the hazard factor exceeds a predetermined threshold level based upon the performance characteristics of the aircraft. Temperatures may be sensed locally, such as by a resistive temperature sensor or, remotely, such as by an infrarred temperature detector. Furthermore, in accordance with preferred embodiments, an inertial reactive wind shear detector is utilized as an integrated safety measure. Moreover, the threshold level may be varied depending on such factors as aircraft altitude.

Method for producing a warning of the existence of low-level wind shear

An electrochemical process and apparatus utilizing a positive and negative electrode. A current is periodically provided in a first direction between the electrodes through the electrolyte of the electrochemical process. The direction of the current is periodically reversed through the electrolyte to repolarize the electrodes, to at least decrease the electric double layer at the electrodes, and to exercise the electrolyte. The current is changed in response to voltage changes occuring across the electrodes caused by perturbations in the electrochemical process itself where the slope of the function representing the current change with respect to a voltage change caused by the perturbations is sufficiently large to enhance the repolarizing, the decreasing of the electric double layer and the exercizing of the electrolyte to thus effect improvement in the electrochemical process.
