Float glass ribbon monitor enhancement method and apparatus

Nip width of a glass ribbon advancing on a molten metal bath is determined by repeatedly, at selected intervals, advancing an edge detector from a first home position toward and into contact with the ribbon edge and then back to a second home position. The first and second home positions are compared at the end of each interval to determine nip width and/or change in nip width. The facilities for determining nip width include a detector responsive to fluid pressure changes. Facilities are also taught relating to measurement of substrate displacements by contacting the substrate edge with a pivotal member to activate an electrical system.

Apparatus for sensing a glass ribbon edge and method of use

A pair of glass ribbon edge detectors each have a power source connected to a carbon probe suspended over the molten metal bath of a glass forming chamber and to the molten metal bath to form a pair of capacitors. The voltage output of each capacitor has a first value when the probe is over the molten metal bath, a second value when the probe is over the glass ribbon and a third value when the probe is over a portion of the molten metal bath and a portion of the glass ribbon edge. Displacement and direction of displacement of each probe is used to determine glass ribbon width. A tweel for metering glass onto the molten metal bath has linear displacement gauges mounted at each side thereof and directly connected to the tweel so as to monitor displacement of the tweel to determine the flow of molten glass into the forming chamber. Movement of the tweel in response to the capacitors' output controls the flow of molten glass to control the ribbon width.

Ribbon edge detector and system for metering flow of molten glass

A beam of light is transmitted through a glass ribbon along a scan path onto a beam splitter. The beam splitter directs a first scanning beam onto a first detector responsive to B type defects and a second scanning beam onto a second detector responsive to point type defects. Monitoring the movement of the scanning beam and the signals from the detectors, the location of B type and point type defects in a glass ribbon are obtained.

A laminated glass-plastic antenna windshield having an elongated conductive element, such as a wire embedded in preferred positions by a thermoplastic polyurethane layer, which is the plastic layer of the laminated antenna windshield. The antenna windshield has a higher Q-value than similar laminated antenna windshields provided with a layer of polyvinyl butyral to carry the elongated electroconductive element and those that carry the wire in positions other than said preferred positions.
