A recording head has a near-field transducer proximate a media-facing surface of the recording head. A waveguide overlaps and delivers light to the near-field transducer. Two subwavelength focusing mirrors are at an end of the waveguide proximate the media-facing surface. The subwavelength mirrors are on opposite crosstrack sides of the near-field transducer and separated from each other by a crosstrack gap. The subwavelength focusing mirrors each include a core having a first edge exposed at the media-facing surface. The core formed of a core material that is resistant to mechanical wear and corrosion, such as a dielectric or robust metal. A liner covers a second edge of the core facing the near-field transducer. The liner includes a plasmonic metal that is different than the core material, such as Au or Al.

A recording head includes a near-field transducer proximate a media-facing surface of the recording head and a waveguide that overlaps and delivers light to the near-field transducer. The recording head includes subwavelength-sized focusing mirror comprising first and second reflectors disposed on cross track sides of the near-field transducer. Each of the first and second reflectors is spaced apart from the media-facing surface by a distance, D, measured along an axis normal to the media-facing surface.

A recording head has a near-field transducer proximate a media-facing surface of the recording head. A write pole has a leading edge proximate to and facing the near-field transducer at the media-facing surface. A magnetic shield faces the leading edge of the write pole at the media-facing surface and is magnetically coupled to the write pole. The magnetic shield has a notch centered over the near-field transducer.

A near-field transducer has an enlarged portion with a layer of soft plasmonic material. A peg formed of a thermally robust plasmonic material includes an embedded part that is partially embedded within the enlarged portion and has an exposed surface facing away from the enlarged portion. An intersection between a lower edge of the enlarged portion and the embedded part has a discontinuity.

A near-field transducer has an enlarged portion with a layer of soft plasmonic material. A peg is embedded in a lower part of the enlarged portion that faces a media-facing surface. The peg has an elongated outer part that extends from a lower edge of the enlarged portion towards the media-facing surface and an embedded part that is embedded within the enlarged portion. The embedded part could be any shape. The peg is formed of a thermally robust plasmonic material.

A recording head includes a magnetic write transducer proximate a near-field transducer. The magnetic write transduce includes a yoke extending in a direction normal to a media-facing surface and a having an edge facing and recessed from the media-facing surface. A write pole extends beyond the first end of the yoke towards the media-facing surface and overlaps a first surface of the yoke that faces the near-field transducer. The write pole has a stepped edge facing away from the media-facing surface. Two or more coil turns are stacked relative to one another in a down-track direction. The two or more coils face a second surface of the yoke that is opposed to the first surface.

A recording head has a near-field transducer at a media-facing surface of the recording head and a write pole on a first side of the near field transducer. A first coil induces a first flux in the write pole. The recording head includes a shield on a second side of the near-field transducer that faces away from the first side. A second coil is proximate the shield and induces a second flux in the shield that controls a field angle of the first flux.

A write head having a main pole, a gap layer, and at least two sacrificial layers. In accordance with one embodiment, a method includes depositing a non-magnetic gap layer of material above a main pole layer of magnetic material; depositing a sacrificial layer of material above the non-magnetic gap layer of material; etching a portion of the sacrificial layer of material while not entirely removing the sacrificial layer of material; and depositing additional sacrificial material to the etched sacrificial layer.

A near-field transducer includes an enlarged portion formed of a soft plasmonic metal. A diffusion barrier is formed on one side of the enlarged portion, the diffusion barrier made of a harder material than the soft plasmonic metal. A heat sink is formed on the diffusion barrier, the heat sink made of the soft plasmonic metal. A peg is embedded in the diffusion layer so that the peg is isolated from the enlarged portion and the heat sink. The peg made of the soft plasmonic material and extends out from the diffusion layer towards a recording medium.

A storage device includes a transducer head with multiple write elements having write poles of different sizes. For example, the transducer head may include two write poles of different width configured to write to a same surface of a storage medium. A controller of the storage device is configured to selectively engage one of the multiple write elements to write data to the storage medium.

An apparatus has a main pole layer of magnetic material, a second layer of magnetic material, a first gap layer of non-magnetic material between the main pole layer and the second layer of magnetic material, and a second gap layer of non-magnetic material disposed between the main pole layer and the second layer of magnetic material. The second gap layer of non-magnetic material can be directly adjacent to the second layer of magnetic material. In accordance with one embodiment, this allows the gap to serve as a non-magnetic seed for the second layer of magnetic material. A method of manufacturing such a device is also described.

A data writer can have at least a write pole separated from first and second side shields by a continuous dielectric gap layer. Each side shield may have first and second shield sub-layers configured with different magnetic moments that increase relative to the sub-layer's distance from the write pole. The side shields may wrap around a leading tip of the write pole to form a box shield.

A data writer may be configured with at least a write pole continuously extending from an air bearing surface to a via. The write pole can contact at least one yoke that contacts the write pole. The write pole and yoke may each be disposed between and separated from a write coil that has a single turn and continuously extends to opposite sides of the write pole.

A near-field transducer includes an enlarged portion and a peg protruding from a first edge. The enlarged portion has a second edge facing away from the first edge. The near-field transducer includes a heat sink disposed on the enlarged portion and with an outline shape that matches that of the enlarged portion. The heat sink is disposed at a first separation distance from the first edge of the enlarged portion and a second, greater, separation distance from the second edge of the enlarged portion. The first separation distance is greater than the second separation distance.
