An acoustic sensor comprises a sensing head comprising an optical fiber having a tip. A graphene diaphragm is disposed on the tip and is configured to vibrate in response to an acoustic signal. A fiber laser is optically coupled to the sensing head. The fiber laser comprises a first set of fiber Bragg gratings and a second set of fiber Bragg gratings. A gap is present between the first set and the second set of fiber Bragg gratings. The fiber laser is configured to generate a sensing optical signal having a first intensity in response to an excitation optical signal, the sensing optical signal impinging on the graphene diaphragm such that a feedback optical signal is reflected from the graphene diaphragm towards the fiber laser and has and has a second intensity modulated by the vibration of the graphene diaphragm that corresponds to the acoustic signal.

A millimeter wave measurement system has been developed for remote detection of airborne nuclear radiation, based on electromagnetic scattering from radiation-induced ionization in air. Specifically, methods of monitoring radiation-induced ionization of air have been investigated, and the ionized air has been identified as a source of millimeter wave radar reflection, which can be utilized to determine the size and strength of a radiation source.

A user-friendly photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) system and process (technique) provides an open-field PAS instrument, unit and device to remotely sense explosives, chemicals and biological agents. The PAS system and process can include: a pulsed tunable laser, such as a COlaser, a reflector, such as a parabolic reflector, an acoustic reverberant resonator in which a microphone is installed, and a data acquisition and analysis system.

Photoacoustic spectroscopy system and technique for remote sensing of explosives and toxic chemicals

A sensor and detection methods are provided for detecting nitric oxides (NOx) in an exhaust gas based upon ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) technique. An ionization chamber having an interior electrically conductive shell receives exhaust gas. A spark electrode having a needle tip extends into the ionization chamber. A shutter grid is coupled between the ionization chamber and an ion drift tube. A substantially continuous spark discharge is established between the electrically conductive shell and the needle tip of the spark electrode for ionization of the exhaust gas. Negative NOions are kept inside the chamber by biasing the electrically conductive shell and the shutter grid at a negative voltage. Then a positive pulse is applied to the shutter grid to cause the shutter to open for negative NOions to exit into the ion drift tube. The IMS sensor is small-sized, low-cost, robust, and reliable.

Ion-mobility spectrometry sensor for NOx detection

An ultrasonic gas analyzer includes an acoustic cavity through which an air sample is drawn by a low speed air pump or other mechanism. The cavity has a pair of ultrasonic wave transmitters/receivers on opposite sides of the acoustic cavity. An electronic circuit controls the transmitters/receivers so that a high frequency ultrasonic wave is propagated across the cavity and thereby through the gas flowing through the cavity. This ultrasonic wave reflects back and forward across the acoustic cavity and the transmitters/receivers receive this wave and supply a signal indicative of the wave to an electronic circuit. Based on the time of flight data for the ultrasonic wave being reflected in a gas/air mixture and in air and the amplitude of those reflected ultrasonic waves, a determination is made as to the gases within the gas/air mixture. This determination then can be displayed and an audio signal can be generated depending on the amount of detected gases. In one embodiment of the gas analyzer, a switch valve is used to selectively provide the gas/air mixture or air through the acoustic cavity. In another embodiment of the gas analyzer, two acoustic cavities are provided with a double concave reflector lens separating the cavities and each with a transducer at an opposite end from the lens. Air is drawn through one of the acoustic cavities and the gas/air mixture is drawn through the other of the acoustic cavities

Ultrasonic gas analyzer and method to analyze trace gases

A slashing process for preparing warp yarns for weaving operations including the steps of sizing and/or desizing the yarns in an acoustic resonance box and separating the yarns with a leasing apparatus comprised of a set of acoustically agitated lease rods. The sizing step includes immersing the yarns in a size solution contained in an acoustic resonance box. Acoustic transducers are positioned against the exterior of the box for generating an acoustic pressure field within the size solution. Ultrasonic waves that result from the acoustic pressure field continuously agitate the size solution to effect greater mixing and more uniform application and penetration of the size onto the yarns. The sized yarns are then separated by passing the warp yarns over and under lease rods. Electroacoustic transducers generate acoustic waves along the longitudinal axis of the lease rods, creating a shearing motion on the surface of the rods for splitting the yarns.

A method and apparatus are provided for monitoring a fabric. An acoustic probe generates acoustic waves relative to the fabric. An acoustic sensor, such as an accelerometer is coupled to the acoustic probe for generating a signal representative of cavitation activity in the fabric. The generated cavitation activity representative signal is processed to indicate moisture content of the fabric. A feature of the invention is a feedback control signal is generated responsive to the generated cavitation activity representative signal. The feedback control signal can be used to control the energy level of the generated acoustic waves and to control the application of a cleaning solution to the fabric.

An ultrasonic method and system are provided for monitoring a fabric to identify a defect. A plurality of ultrasonic transmitters generate ultrasonic waves relative to the fabric. An ultrasonic receiver means responsive to the generated ultrasonic waves from the transmitters receives ultrasonic waves coupled through the fabric and generates a signal. An integrated peak value of the generated signal is applied to a digital signal processor and is digitized. The digitized signal is processed to identify a defect in the fabric. The digitized signal processing includes a median value filtering step to filter out high frequency noise. Then a mean value and standard deviation of the median value filtered signal is calculated. The calculated mean value and standard deviation are compared with predetermined threshold values to identify a defect in the fabric.

Ultrasonic imaging system for in-process fabric defect detection

Methods and apparatus are provided for monitoring sliver and yarn characteristics. Transverse waves are generated relative to the sliver or yarn. At least one acoustic sensor is in contact with the sliver or yarn for detecting waves coupled to the sliver or yarn and for generating a signal. The generated signal is processed to identify the predefined characteristics including sliver or yarn linear density. The transverse waves can be generated with a high-powered acoustic transmitter spaced relative to the sliver or yarn with large amplitude pulses having a central frequency in a range between 20 KHz and 40 KHz applied to the transmitter. The transverse waves can be generated by mechanically agitating the sliver or yarn with a tapping member.

Acoustic methods to monitor sliver linear density and yarn strength

An ultrasonic viscometer and method for measuring fluid viscosity are provided. Ultrasonic shear and longitudinal waves are generated and coupled to the fluid. Reflections from the generated ultrasonic shear and longitudinal waves are detected. Phase velocity of the fluid is determined responsive to the detected ultrasonic longitudinal waves reflections. Viscosity of the fluid is determined responsive to the detected ultrasonic shear waves reflections. Unique features of the ultrasonic viscometer include the use of a two-interface fluid and air transducer wedge to measure relative signal change and to enable self calibration and the use of a ratio of reflection coefficients for two different frequencies to compensate for environmental changes, such as temperature.
