Various apparatuses, systems, methods, and media are disclosed to provide a heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) medium that has a magnetic recording layer on a magnesium oxide-titanium oxide (MTO) underlayer, where the MTO underlayer includes an additive material that chemically bonds with titanium. In some examples, the additive material includes iron-oxide, iron, carbon, or various aluminum oxides. By providing the additive material to the MTO that chemically bonds with the titanium of the MTO, diffusion of titanium from the MTO underlayer into the magnetic recording layer is mitigated to provide an improved recording layer that achieves improved areal densities. In some embodiments, an additional magnesium oxide-nitrogen underlayer is also provided, which may include more of the additive material.

Aspects of the present disclosure provide a heat assisted magnetic recording HAMR media structure and methods for reducing the Curie temperature distribution to improve the signal-to-noise characteristics of HAMR media. A magnetic recording medium includes a substrate, a heat sink layer on the substrate, and a magnetic recording layer on the heat sink layer. The magnetic recording layer includes a plurality of magnetic recording grains configured for recording and comprising a first magnetic alloy. The magnetic recording layer further includes a plurality of segregants disposed to isolate the plurality of magnetic recording grains and comprising a second magnetic alloy. A Curie temperature of the second magnetic alloy is higher than a Curie temperature of the first magnetic alloy.

Heat assisted magnetic recording media with amorphous magnetic grain boundary material

HAMR media with a magnetic recording layer having a reduced Curie temperature and methods of fabricating the HAMR media are provided. One such HAMR medium includes a substrate, a heat sink layer on the substrate, an interlayer on the heat sink layer, and a multi-layer magnetic recording layer on the interlayer. In such case, the multi-layer magnetic recording layer includes a first magnetic recording layer including an alloy selected from FePtX and CoPtX, where X is a material selected from the group consisting of Cu, Ni, and combinations thereof, a second magnetic recording layer on the first magnetic recording layer and having at least one material different from the materials of the first magnetic recording layer, and a third magnetic recording layer on the second magnetic recording layer and having at least one material different from the materials of the first magnetic recording layer.

Heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) media with Curie temperature reduction layer

A heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) medium has a heat-sink layer, a chemically-ordered FePt (or CoPt) alloy magnetic layer and a MgNiO intermediate layer between the heat-sink layer and the magnetic layer. The intermediate layer is a solid substitution crystalline alloy of the form (MgNi)O, where y is less than 10 and greater than or equal to 0.5. The magnetic layer may be formed directly on the MgNiO intermediate layer, in which case the MgNiO intermediate layer functions as both a seed layer and a thermal barrier layer. The HAMR medium may also include an optional layer of crystalline 'pure' MgO directly below or directly above the MgNiO intermediate layer. If the MgO layer is located directly above the MgNiO intermediate layer then the MgNiO intermediate layer functions primarily as a thermal barrier layer. The HAMR medium with the MgNiO intermediate layer provides a substantial improvement in corrosion resistance.

Heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) medium with improved corrosion resistance

A heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) medium has a rhodium (Rh) or Rh-based alloy heat-sink layer. The Rh or Rh-based alloy does not roughen when annealed and thus does not require an intermediate layer between it and the MgO seed layer for the recording layer, so the MgO seed layer can be formed directly on and in contact with the Rh or Rh-based alloy heat-sink layer. The Rh or Rh-based alloy heat-sink layer is formed on a seed layer or multilayer that allows the Rh or Rh-based alloy to grow with the desired face-centered-cubic (fcc) crystalline structure.

Heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) medium with rhodium or rhodium-based alloy heat-sink layer

A heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) medium has a multilayered or laminated heat-sink structure. The laminated heat-sink structure includes a first heat-sink layer and a RuAl&#x2014;X thermal barrier layer between the medium substrate and the first heat-sink layer. The laminated heat-sink structure may include a second heat-sink layer may between the substrate and the RuAl&#x2014;X thermal barrier layer. In the RuAl&#x2014;X thermal barrier layer, X is selected from C and one or more oxides of Si, Ti, W, Zr and Hf. The HAMR medium with the laminated heat-sink structure reduces the amount of required laser current as compared to a similar HAMR medium with a conventional single heat-sink layer of the same thickness, while also slightly improving magnetic properties and recording performance.

FePt-based heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) media comprising a thick granular FePt:C magnetic recording layer capable of maintaining a single layer film having desirable magnetic properties. According to one embodiment, the thick granular FePt:C magnetic recording layer comprises a plurality of carbon doped FePt alloy columnar grains, where the plurality of carbon doped FePt alloy columnar grains comprise a carbon gradient along the thickness of the hard magnetic recording layer.

Single layer small grain size FePT:C film for heat assisted magnetic recording media

Segregants for magnetic recording layers and materials for intermediate layers underlying the magnetic recording layers are provided for improved heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) media. One such HAMR medium includes a substrate, a heat sink layer on the substrate, an underlayer on the heat sink layer, an intermediate layer of TiON, VON, CrON, TiOC, VOC, TiONC, and/or combinations thereof, on the underlayer, and a magnetic recording layer of FePt on the intermediate layer. The magnetic recording layer further includes three sublayers, each having a different segregant. The segregant of the first magnetic recording sublayer on the intermediate layer includes AgBN, AgCN, AgBNC, AgBO, AgMoO, AgVO, BO, MoO, VO, and/or combinations thereof.

Systems and methods for forming magnetic recording media with improved columnar growth for energy assisted magnetic recording are provided. In one such method, a first sub-layer of a magnetic layer is formed on a substrate, the magnetic layer including a magnetic material and a plurality of non-magnetic segregants, a top surface of the first sub-layer is etched to substantially remove the non-magnetic segregants accumulated on the top surface, and a second sub-layer of the magnetic layer is formed on the first sub-layer.
