Disclosed are processes for forming an oligomer product by contacting a feedstock olefin containing trisubstituted olefins with a solid acid catalyst. The oligomer product can be formed at an oligomerization temperature in a range from &#x2212;20&#xb0; C. to 40&#xb0; C. Polyalphaolefins produced from the oligomer product can have reduced viscosities at low temperatures.

In one embodiment, we disclose hardened olefin waxes and processes for preparing them. In another embodiment, we disclose oxidized olefin waxes having low viscosity and processes for preparing them. The waxes are suitable for use as polishes, coatings, or inks, among other uses. For example, a hardened olefin wax composition produced from a feedstock olefin wax composition by contacting the feedstock olefin wax composition with an oxygen-containing gas at a temperature greater than a melting point of the feedstock olefin wax composition, the hardened olefin wax composition having: a needle penetration value at 25&#xb0; C. at least 5 percent less than a needle penetration value at 25&#xb0; C. of the feedstock olefin wax composition; a a kinematic viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. of up to about 200% greater than the kinematic viscosity of the feedstock olefin wax composition; and a saponification number less than 5 mg KOH/g hardened olefin wax composition.

Olefin waxes having improved hardness or viscosity

An oxidized olefin wax useful as a pour point depressant for hydrocarbon compositions and/or additive to reduce the wax particle size of wax precipitates in hydrocarbon compositions is described. Method for reducing the pour point and/or wax particle size of hydrocarbon composition with an oxidized olefin wax are described.

Oxidized olefin wax pour point depressants

A process to oxidize an olefin wax, comprising: contacting a feedstock olefin wax composition with an oxygen-containing gas at a temperature greater than a melting point of the feedstock olefin wax composition melting point, to prepare an oxidized olefin wax composition wherein the oxidized olefin wax composition has an acid number greater than 1 mg KOH/g oxidized olefin wax composition and a kinematic viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. less than 70 cSt.

In one embodiment, we disclose hardened olefin waxes and processes for preparing them. In another embodiment, we disclose oxidized olefin waxes having low viscosity and processes for preparing them. The waxes are suitable for use as polishes, coatings, or inks, among other uses.

Herein is disclosed a modified ethylene vinyl alcohol polymer (EVOH) comprising an oxygen scavenging functional group. Preferably, the modified EVOH comprises structures IV, V, and VI:  wherein x is an integer greater than or equal to 1, y is an integer greater than or equal to 1, z is an integer greater than or equal to 1, and R comprises a cycloalkenyl group. The modified EVOH is useful in oxygen barrier applications, such as a forming an oxygen barrier layer of a packaging article. Also disclosed are methods of modifying ethylene vinyl alcohol polymers, and using the modified EVOH to make packaging articles with a superior barrier to entry by atmospheric oxygen.

Enhanced oxygen barrier performance from modification of ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymers (EVOH)

Herein is disclosed an oxygen barrier composition comprising an oxygen barrier polymer and an oxygen scavenging polymer. Preferably, the oxygen barrier polymer is selected from polymers or copolymers of vinyl alcohol, polyesters, polymers or copolymers of vinylidene dichloride, polymers or copolymers of epoxies, polysulfones, polymers or copolymers of acrylonitrile, polymers or copolymers of isocyanates, or polyamides other than MXD6; and the oxygen scavenging polymer either comprises an ethylenic backbone and a cyclic olefinic pendant group of structure I, or a polyester group of structure II or structure III: wherein q, q, q, q, and r are independently selected from hydrogen, methyl, or ethyl; m is &#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;, wherein n is an integer from 0 to 4, inclusive; X is null or a linking group; and, when r is hydrogen, at least one of q, q, q, and qis also hydrogen. The oxygen barrier composition can be formed into an oxygen barrier layer of a packaging article. Such layers and articles, and methods for making same, are also disclosed.

Compatible blend systems of oxygen barrier polymers and oxygen scavenging polymers

Herein is disclosed an oxygen barrier composition comprising an oxygen barrier polymer and an oxygen scavenging polymer. The composition can be in the form of a physical blend or a cross-linked blend, and can further comprise a compatibilizer, a transesterification catalyst, or both. Preferably, the oxygen barrier polymer is poly(ethylene/vinyl alcohol) (EVOH), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), or polyamide other than MXD6. Preferably, the oxygen scavenging polymer comprises an ethylenic backbone and a pendant cyclic olefinic group, or the oxygen scavenging polymer is a polyamide derived at least in part from a xylene diamine-based monomer. The oxygen barrier composition can be formed into an oxygen barrier layer of a packaging article. Such layers and articles, and methods for making same, are also disclosed.

Rigid containers are provided comprising oxygen scavenger compositions that produce only low levels of volatiles or by-products as a consequence of oxygen scavenging. In particular, a family of polymers containing selected cyclic olefinic pendent groups are used in the rigid containers to achieve oxygen scavenging that is associated with minimal or no organoleptic by-products after oxidation.

Herein are disclosed modified vinyl alcohol polymers (mPVOH), wherein the mPVOH can comprise structure VII:and at least one structure comprising structure IX:or structure X:wherein &#x2014;R can independently comprise an unsubstituted hydrocarbon moiety comprising at least one alpha hydrogen or a substituted hydrocarbon moiety comprising at least one alpha hydrogen. The mPVOH can be useful in oxygen barrier applications, such as a forming an oxygen barrier layer of a packaging article. Also disclosed are methods of forming mPVOH and methods of using mPVOH to make packaging articles with a superior barrier to entry by atmospheric oxygen.

Enhanced oxygen barrier performance from modification of vinyl alcohol polymers (PVOH) or ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymers (EVOH)

Herein is disclosed an oxygen scavenging composition, comprising (i) an oxygen scavenging polymer comprising structure I:X&#x2014;R&#x2014;X&#x2014;O&#x2014;CH&#x2014;Ar&#x2014;CH&#x2014;O,&#x2003;&#x2003;(I) wherein &#x2014;R&#x2014; is selected from the group consisting of C&#x2013;Calkyl, C&#x2013;Csubstituted alkyl, C&#x2013;Caryl, and C&#x2013;Csubstituted aryl; &#x2014;Ar&#x2014; is selected from the group consisting of C&#x2013;Caryl and C&#x2013;Csubstituted aryl; and &#x2014;X&#x2014; is selected from the group consisting of null and &#x2014;C(&#x2550;O)&#x2014;; (ii) a transition metal oxidation catalyst; and (iii) an energy-absorbing compound selected from the group consisting of microwave reactive materials and photoinitiators having a wavelength of maximum absorption of electromagnetic radiation from about 200 nm to about 750 nm. The oxygen scavenging composition can be used to form an oxygen barrier packaging article.
