The present invention relates, in part, to an alpha-alumina support for a hydrogenation catalyst useful in hydrogenating fluoroolefins. In certain aspects, it relates to a method for hydrogenating a compound by contacting an olefin reactant having at least one carbon-fluorine bond, with a supported hydrogenation catalyst. The reaction results in a product that includes a hydrogenated derivative of the olefin. In certain embodiments, the supported hydrogenation catalyst includes a zero-valent metal disposed on an alpha-alumina support.

Hydrogenation catalyst

The invention relates to a process for reducing the concentration of a fluorinated alkyne impurity, such as 3,3,3-trifluoropropyne (TFPY), in 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (HFO-1234yf) which comprises contacting such a mixture with a caustic material, such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), under conditions effective to reduce the concentration of the fluorinated alkyne impurity, including in some practices reducing the concentration by at least about 50%.

Process for reducing 3,3,3-trifluoropropyne in 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene

The invention provides a reactor comprising a reaction chamber having a catalytic surface in contact with reactants in said chamber, and a source for passing electrical current through said catalytic surface. The reactor can be used for dehydrohalogentation reactions, such as dehydrochlorination of HCFC-244bb to HFO-1234yf and for reactions where zero valent metals are employed for catalysis. The invention further provides a process to prepare HFO-1234yf from HCFC-244bb using an electrically heated reaction chamber.

A process for making a fluorinated olefin having the step of dehydrochlorinating a hydrochlorofluorocarbon having at least one hydrogen atom and at least one chlorine atom on adjacent carbon atoms, preferably carried out in the presence of a catalyst selected from the group consisting of (i) one or more metal halides, (ii) one or more halogenated metal oxides, (iii) one or more zero-valent metals/metal alloys, (iv) a combination of two or more of the foregoing.

A process for the simultaneous removal of iron and phosphate ions from a chlorinated hydrocarbon waste stream, such as a waste stream derived from a process for manufacturing 1,1,1,3,3-pentachloropropane (HCC-240fa) and/or 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane (HCC-250fb). The waste stream contains at least one of chlorinated hydrocarbons, tributyl phosphate (TBP) and/or triethyl phosphate (TEP), iron, FeCland/or FeCl, a TBP-FeClcomplex and/or a TBP-FeClcomplex, and a TEP-FeClcomplex and/or a TEP-FeClcomplex, and is subjected to thermal oxidation to generate a second, aqueous waste stream containing at least one of hydrogen chloride (HCl), FeCland/or FeCl, and HPO. The second waste stream is exposed to a base to generate a precipitate including at least one insoluble compound selected from the group consisting of FePO, Fe(OH), and Ca(PO), and the precipitate is separated from the second waste stream to produce a liquid phase including only trace amounts of iron and phosphate ions.

A process for the manufacture of haloalkanes, or more particularly to a process for the manufacture of 1,1,1,3,3-pentachloropropane (HCC-240fa) and/or 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane (HCC-250fb). The present invention relates, at least in part, to a process for making chlorotrifluoroethylene (CFO-1113) from 1,2-dichloro-1,1,2-trifluoroethane (HCFC-123a). In certain aspects, the present invention relates to methods for increasing the cost efficiency and safety of the hydrogenation of a fluorinated olefin by controlling the reaction conditions and parameters. In further aspects, the hydrogenation reaction is provided in a two stage reaction wherein the reactant amounts, temperature and other parameters are controlled such that the conversion percentage, selectivity, and reaction parameters are all within commercially acceptable levels.

Process for the manufacture of fluorinated olefins

The present invention relates, in part, to the discovery that, during the fluorination of certain fluoroolefin starting reagents, particularly, 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene (1230xa), oligomerization/polymerization of such starting reagents reduces the conversion process and leads to increased catalyst deactivation.
