A portable information handling system includes a touch function row between a keyboard and a display that accepts touches at plural locations to initiate an on-screen-display user interface for a selected of plural functions based upon a touch location. The touch locations may be identified with illumination points and unlabeled as to an associated function since the function associated with a touch location is presented at the display. Alternatively, a secondary display presents function key images at the touch function row. The on-screen-display user interface presents different control interfaces when touches include multiple fingers and drag versus non-drag inputs.

A portable information handling system is assembled and disassembled by a keystone assembly that couples at an upper surface of the portable housing to overlap a keyboard assembly that covers processing components disposed in the portable housing. A motherboard couples to the portable housing under the keyboard assembly with openings aligned to insert over retaining nuts extending from the housing, the openings having a varied size so that the motherboard slides between released and engaged positions. A cooling fan couples to the motherboard adjacent to one side to retain the motherboard in the engaged position and is removed to allow the motherboard to slide to the released position. Plural cooling fans interface in series with the motherboard to provide additional cooling capacity.

A tablet information handling system selectively couples to a charging stand and charging dock with opposing sets of spaced magnets to have magnetic attraction hold a wireless charging receiver aligned with a wireless charger. Magnetic attraction is greatest when the tablet information handling system couples in a landscape or portrait orientation and is reduced for removal of the tablet information handling system by rotating to an offset orientation so that magnets align with opposing spaces, resulting in a reduced magnetic attraction. A sensor disposed in a space detects the offset rotation by detecting the increased magnetic flux of the magnet aligning with the space so that a user interface can provide an end user with an indication that the tablet information handling system is positioned for separation from the charging stand or charging dock.

A portable information handling system includes a keyboard having a first set of conventional keys with a first travel distance to impact a membrane, such as keys having rubber dome biasing devices, and a second set of keys having a second smaller travel distance to impact the membrane with an alternative biasing device and haptic feedback to reinforce an input feel for an end user. In one example embodiment, the second set of keys are biased upward with a compressible foam with the membrane raised by a platform structure under the second set of keys and a piezoelectric device under the membrane for each key to provide a vibration when the membrane detects an input.
