An ambient condition detector incorporates a common radiant energy source to carry out a first, sensing, function and a second, information transmitting function. The source can generate a beam to implement a fire sensing function. In addition, modulated radiant energy emitted from the source can be remotely sensed to determine detector status or internal parameter values. In an alternate embodiment, a source of radiant energy can be configured at an exterior periphery of the detector and information can be wirelessly transmitted therefrom using one or more analog modulation processes.

Wireless transfer of data from a detector

An electrical unit, such as an ambient condition detector, incorporates pattern discrimination circuitry. A received pattern is analyzed and, if it is in accordance with a predetermined pattern, the unit outputs an audible and/or visible indicium synchronized with the incoming pattern for the duration thereof. The unit also includes circuitry for emitting a corresponding output signal pattern to at least one other detector. A system which incorporates a plurality of electrical units, at least one of which has the pattern discrimination circuitry produces at least one synchronized audible or visible output indicative of a predetermined condition throughout the system. Patterns can include predetermined tonal alarm indicating output patterns as well as predetermined visible alarm indicating output patterns.

Device with built-in signal discrimination and output synchronization circuits

An energy efficient, easily manufacturable, multi-sensor detector incorporates a smoke sensor and a thermal sensor. A single die programmed processor with integrally formed storage circuits for programs and parameters senses sensor signals, from different types of sensors, during a common activation cycle and processes those signals during the same cycle. The processor can also monitor the condition of an energy supplying battery and provide modulation signals to an audible output device. Other detector functions can be interleaved between output device modulation signals to minimize the cost of the programmed processor and thereby provide the required functionality very cost effectively.

Processor based wireless detector

A software driven monitoring system includes a common control element coupled to a plurality of monitoring devices. The devices can indicate to the control element that a predetermined condition has been detected. Where the control element transmits a status inquiry command to the devices, those devices exhibiting the status provide the same indication to the control element as is indicative of the predetermined condition. One indication is a shunt or a short circuit of a medium between the common control element and the devices. An existing system can be upgraded by installing the control element, or upgrading an existing control program. Alternately, the devices can be installed in a system wherein the control element does not issue the status inquiry command. In those installations, the monitoring devices never issue a status reply as the required command is never received.
