The invention is a process for the preparation of 2-oxazolidinones which comprises contacting a 2-hydroxyalkyl carbamate with an alkylene oxide or alkylene carbonate in the presence of a catalytic amount of a quaternary ammonium halide, quaternary phosphonium halide, a group I metal carbonate, hydroxide, oxide or halide, or a group II metal carbonate, hydroxide, oxide or halide under conditions such that a 2-oxazolidinone is prepared.

Process for preparation of 2-oxazolidinones

The invention is a process for the preparation of the metal salt of 2-aminoalkanesulfonic acid which comprises contacting a 2-oxazolidinone with a water-soluble metal sulfite or a water-soluble metal hydrogen sulfite in aqueous solution under conditions such that a metal salt of 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid is prepared.

Preparation of 2-aminoalkanesulfonic acid

A catalyst for the oxidation of phenols to 1,4-benzoquinones in the gas phase with an oxygen containing gas such as air, substantially pure oxygen, or mixtures thereof. The composition of the catalyst comprises vanadium pentoxide or ammonium metavanadate, the sulfate salt of an alkali metal or of ammonia, the pyrosulfate salt of an alkali metal or of ammonia, an iron sulfate, boric acid, and silica.
