Polymeric compositions and methods of making and using such compositions are provided. The compositions incorporate a first component that is an isobutylene-based polymer and a second component having propylene-derived units and polyene derived units. The polymeric compositions have desirable processability characteristics, particularly for injection molding applications.

The invention provides a method for increasing the viscosity of halogenated (brominated) elastomeric copolymers of a Cto Cisomonoolefin (isobutylene) and a para-alkylstryrene (p-methylstyrene) by mixing the copolymer with a silica or clay particulate filler which has been contacted with an aminosilane containing at least one Cto Calkoxy group and at least one primary, secondary or tertiary amine group. The resulting elastomer compositions are used to prepare thermoplastic elastomer blend compositions, containing more finely dispersed elastomers which results in compositions having improved mechanical properties.

Halogenated isobutylene-based copolymers having enhanced viscosity and thermoplastic compositions thereof

The invention provides a method for increasing the viscosity of C&#x2013;Cisoolefin copolymers including halomethylstyrene derived units by mixing the copolymer with a hindered amine or phosphine of the structure RRRN or RRRP wherein R, Rand Rare preferably lower and higher alkyl groups. The resulting ionically associated, amino or phosphine modified elastomers are used to prepare thermoplastic elastomer blend compositions, including dynamically vulcanized compositions, containing more finely dispersed elastomers which results in compositions having improved mechanical properties.

Halogenated elastomeric compositions having enhanced viscosity

Oriented films are prepared. A thermoplastic vulcanizate, prepared by mixing at least 20 wt % of a thermoset rubber by weight of the total composition into a thermoplastic polymer are disclosed. After the mixture is prepared the thermoset rubber is entrained as discrete particles within the continuous thermoplastic polymer phase. The resulting composite is subjected to a stress either by pulling, blow molding, or any other film-forming process as is known in the art. This stress causes the continuous phase polymer molecules to become aligned or oriented in the direction in which the stress was applied, thus creating the oriented thermoplastic vulcanizate of the invention. This material has improved gas permeability and improved flexibility properties.

The present invention is a composition and a method of forming a composition, the composition comprising at least a halogenated elastomer and an amine or phosphine. An additional rubber component may be present in the composition of the invention. In one embodiment, the halogenated elastomer is a isoolefin copolymer comprising a halomethylstyrene derived unit. The amine or phosphine compound is represented by the formula (RRR)Q, wherein Q is a Group 15 element, and wherein Ris either hydrogen or a Cto Chydrocarbyl group, Ris either hydrogen or a Cto Chydrocarbyl group; and Ris either hydrogen or a Cto Chydrocarbyl group provided that at least one of R, Rand Ris not hydrogen. The additional rubber is selected from butyl rubber, halogenated butyl rubber, star-branched butyl rubber, halogenated star-branched butyl rubber, isobutylene homopolymer, butadiene rubber, neoprene, nitrile rubbers, ethylene/propylene/diene terpolymers, ethylene/propylene copolymers, styrene butadiene rubbers, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, isoolefin/alkylstyrene copolymer, halogenated isoolefin/alkylstyrene copolymer, natural rubber, polypropylene, polyethylene, polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride, silicon rubber, propylene oxide polymer, and mixtures thereof.

Halogenated elastomeric compositions having improved stability and green strength

The invention generally relates to thermoplastic blends having improved properties. Optionally, these blends may be dynamically vulcanized. More specifically, this invention is directed to a composition comprising a blend of chloromethylated(styrene-isobutylene) polymer and a thermoplastic resin selected from the group consisting of polyamides, polyesters, polycarbonates, polysulfones, polyacetals, polyacetones, acrylonitrile-butadiene styrene resins, polyphenylene oxide, polyphenylene sulfide, styrene-acrylonitrile resins, styrene-maleic anhydride resins, polyamides, aromatic polyketones, ethylene vinyl alcohol polymer and mixtures thereof. Tires and tire components such as air permeation prevention films comprising these compositions are also provided.

Thermoplastic blend

The improved green strength, green elongation, and green relaxation properties of isobutylene-based elastomers at elevated temperatures along with improved aging and barrier properties are achieved by blending semi-compatible, semi-crystalline copolymers with the isobutylene elastomers. The semi-crystalline copolymers are typically copolymers of ethylene and an alpha-olefin having from 4 to 16 carbon atoms. The improved properties are maintained in subsequent rubber compounds containing said blends and are particularly useful in tire and pharmaceutical container applications.
