A process for the preparation of synthesis gas by the partial combustion of an ash-containing fuel with an oxygen-containing gas is described, the synthesis gas formed being removed from the top of the reactor through a gas discharge pipe, and slag formed through a slag discharge at the bottom of the reactor, the process being characterized by the counter-current contact of the synthesis gas in the reactor with cold fly-slag agglomerates.

A method and apparatus for separating slag discharged from a coal gasification reactor to a slag water bath by converging the flow of the slag with a chamber at least partially submerged in the slag water bath such that the flow of slag is converged to a diameter no greater than the diameter of the discharge opening of the slag water bath.

Slag water bath process

A safety device for protecting a burner of a coal gasification plant against solid blockage. Solid blockage may occur in a burner of a coal gasification plant fed with a mixture of coal particles and fluid. In order to protect the burner against solid blockage a safety device is proposed which is arranged in the supply line to the burner. By means of this safety device relatively large pieces of solid material, which might cause blockage of the burner, can be eliminated from the mixture of coal particles and fluid supplied to the burner.

Safety device for a burner of a coal gasification plant

A process and apparatus, wherein as hot gas from a coal gasifier discharges through a tubular outlet having therein a wall which is permeable throughout its length for the flow of hot gas centrally therethrough, a gas shield is formed along the inner surface of the tubular outlet by passing a coolant through the wall, which gas shield cools the wall and prevents sticky ash particles in the hot gas from hitting the wall. The gas shield also cools the hot gas so that the sticky ash particles lose their stickiness.
