A conversion tool enables XPS documents to be automatically converted into the Open XPS format and for Open XPS-formatted documents to be automatically converted into the XPS format. The conversion tool may convert content types, package-level relationships, part-level attributes, and image parts into a format supported by either document format.

Embodiments relate to an operating system configured to enable arbitrary applications to output 3D models to be physically formed by arbitrary 3D manufacturing devices. The operating system manages the 3D manufacturing devices, including installation of related software, device drivers, device properties, and so forth. The operating system also provides a path through which the arbitrary applications pass arbitrary print jobs (or documents) of 3D models, in a standard format, to the 3D manufacturing devices. The operating system handles queuing and spooling on behalf of the applications and the 3D manufacturing devices. Drivers of the 3D manufacturing devices may translate the 3D models outputted by the applications (in the standard format) to instructions or device language content that is specific to the respective 3D manufacturing devices.

Runtime code hooking techniques are described in which a place holder instruction within a compiled module is used as an entry point to enable code hooking. A hook function to modify a target function is developed. At runtime, the target function to be modified is located. A place holder instruction within the target function is overwritten with instructions to cause execution of the hook function when the target function is called.

Subject matter described herein is directed to providing font-rendering information (e.g., XPS file) that is usable to print a document. For example, a font file is received that defines a font type included in the document. A determination is made that a quantity of pages of the document does not exceed a subsetting-optimization threshold. When the quantity of pages does not exceed the threshold, a subsetted font file of the font type is generated. The subsetted file is provided, such as via the spool file, to a print subsystem.

Technology described herein is directed to converting display-rendering instructions (e.g., DIRECT2D) into print-rendering instructions (e.g., EMF, WMF, XPS, and SVG). For example, a request to print an item (e.g., document) is received, the item being displayable on an output device when display-rendering instructions are executed. A print render target is created that includes an instructions converter. The display-rendering instructions are routed to the print render target. The instructions converter maps the display-rendering instructions to the print-rendering instructions, which are usable to print the item.
