A remote storage digital video recorder (RSDVR) retains multiple copies of media programs so long as the copies are expected to be useful to at least one user. Rather than assigning copies to specific users at the time the program is recorded, copies can be assigned as the users request access to the particular media programs. Copies of unassigned programs can be deleted according to a schedule to reduce disk storage and processing demands on the system. A pool of program copies that are not initially assigned to particular users can be maintained until the user makes a specific request to view the program. This 'late assignment' of program copies can substantially reduce the amount of data stored by the RSDVR system without substantially impacting the viewer experience.

Intelligent assignment and data management of stored media content

A technique for managing the streaming of digital video content to multiple clients involves identifying an attribute of a content element that is streamed to a client and selecting a protection mechanism for the content element as a function of the attribute, wherein the protection mechanism enables streaming of the content element to the clients in the event of a resource failure. In an example, the identified attribute is an indication of the popularity of the content element (e.g., as measured by the number of active streams), such that the protection mechanism is selected as a function of the popularity of the content element. In an embodiment, protection mechanisms that offer a higher level of protection are selected for the more popular content elements and protection mechanisms that offer a lower level of protection are selected for the less popular content elements.

A technique for streaming digital video content to multiple clients involves establishing a logical group of IP-connected stream servers, generating state information at multiple stream servers within the logical group, sharing the state information amongst stream servers in the logical group, and using the shared state information to respond to resource failures within the logical group. By sharing state information within the logical group of stream servers, stream servers with the shared state information can quickly take over the active streams from a failed stream server within the logical group. The quick transition of responsibility from one stream server to another enables the streaming network to provide continuous streaming of digital video content to the viewer without interruption.

A technique for transitioning streamed digital video content between stream servers involves identifying a transition identifier that indicates a point at which streaming of the digital video content transitions from a first stream server to a second stream server and then transitioning the streaming from the first stream server the second stream server at a point in the digital video content that corresponds to the transition identifier. For example, the first stream server stops streaming the digital video content at a point in the digital video content that corresponds to the transition identifier and the second stream server starts streaming the digital video content at a point in the digital video content that corresponds to the transition identifier.

Method and system for transitioning streamed digital video content between stream servers in a digital video network

Techniques for the transparent takeover of network connections are presented. A first server is engaged in a connection with a client. The transactions of the connection and the traffic are monitored by a traffic cache manager. The first server records sequence numbers for the transactions with a synchronization store. If the first server fails, a last recorded sequence number is updated by the traffic cache manager within the synchronization store on behalf of a second server, which is to takeover the connection for the unresponsive first server.

The request includes an identity used for authenticating the requestor. The identity is used for generating an identity configuration and for generating a temporarily assigned identity that is updated to a protected identity directory. The service uses the temporarily assigned identity to access the protected identity directory for purposes of authenticating the request. The service uses the authenticated request to access attributes associated with the temporarily assigned identity.

A system and a method for transparent takeover (or failover) of a remote client TCP connection from a first server in a cluster of interconnected servers to a second server provides the storing of shared state information relative to the connection on each involved server and using of the shared state information to reestablish the connection on the second server. A message using a sequence number to refer to a previously transmitted data element (such as a byte) is sent by the second server and a received client acknowledgement (ACK) of that sequence number, or a higher one, is used to synchronize the server's data packet transmission sequence number with the ACK-transmitted sequence number. If synchronization is successful, then the connection is restarted on the second server from the point of termination/failure on the first server.

System and method for transparent takeover of TCP connections between servers

A proxy partition cache (PPC) architecture and a technique for address-partitioning a proxy cache consisting of a grouping of discrete, cooperating caches (servers) is provided. Client requests for objects (files) of a given size are redirected or reassigned to a single cache in the grouping, notwithstanding the cache to which the request is made by the load-balancing mechanism (such as a Layer 4 switch) based upon load-balancing considerations. The file is then returned to the switch via the switch-designated cache for vending to the requesting client. The redirection/reassignment occurs according to a function within the cache to which the request is directed so that the switch remains freed from additional tasks that can compromise speed.

System and method for partitioning address space in a proxy cache server cluster

A proxy cache cluster (PCC) couples to a service provider of a communications network to increase the availability of services offered by the provider to clients connected to the network. The clients access the services by issuing requests to network addresses associated with these services. The PCC increases the availability of the services by receiving and servicing those requests on behalf of the service provider in accordance with a proxy cache clustering technique.

A method for controlling communications between endnodes in a packet-switched computer network includes dynamic window sizing and dynamic packet metering. Dynamic window sizing regularly probes the network to determine whether higher throughput is available at an increased window size, and avoids unnecessary decreases in window size after a packet is dropped or all available data has been transmitted. Dynamic packet metering regularly adjusts the rate at which packets are transmitted in response to changes in the measured propagation rate of packets through the network. To avoid unnecessary ack packets, acks are bundled together and piggybacked on returning data packets when appropriate. The invention provides control even if the address of an endnode changes. The invention also supports multiplexing several logical connections over a single transport session and combining data from several connections in a single packet, as well as construction of packets in a network-layer-independent format.

License documents can be used to retain information related to a license. Portions of a license document can be encrypted using a private key and message digests. The encrypted result can be stored in the license document, and examined to validate a license. License documents can be created in batches. One or more licenses in a batch of licenses can be enabled to create a software license.
