Flexible metal tapes and adhesives are disclosed. The tapes comprise one or more alloy powders, PTFE powder, and a water-based casting vehicle, while the adhesives include inorganic substances such as sodium silicate, boric acid, sodium tetraborate, sodium fluoride, or sodium aluminum fluoride as well as pastes having compositions similar to the flexible metal tapes. The tapes and adhesives shrink minimally linearly when brazed to metal substrates, avoiding surface cracks that often result from shrinkage. The adhesive additionally retains the tape in place on the substrate, regardless of orientation, both before and during brazing.

A ductile brazing material containing, by weight, 75-98% gold, 0.5-20% nickel, 0.5-6% vanadium, 0.25-5.9% molybdenum and, optionally chromium is disclosed for directly bonding ceramic/ceramic, ceramic/metal or metal/metal systems over an optimum temperature range.

A method of manufacturing a hermetically sealed conductive feedthrough, particularly for use in ceramic substrates or housing, comprises the steps of inserting an active alloy containing preform into a predetermined insertion hole in a presintered ceramic article and heating the assembly to a temperature to achieve a brazing reaction at the interface of the article and active alloy to produce a hermetically sealed conductive feedthrough. The invention further discloses a non-melting connector pin which may be fixed to the active alloy feedthrough during the above heating step.

A method for joining a metal body to a ceramic body in abutting relationship is disclosed. This method includes the steps of directly applying a brazing paste to a bonding area of a ceramic body without the use of a brazing preform, contacting a metal body to the bonding area of the ceramic body, and heating and cooling to form a braze fillet between the metal and ceramic bodies. The particular feature of the method is that the brazing pastes will wet and coat the entire bonding area of the ceramic body which is to be joined to the metal body.

An alloy for brazing ceramics has the following composition, in weight percent: 0.5 to 3% titanium; 0.25 to 2% aluminum, silicon or tin; 2 to 6% copper; balance silver.

A double-ended ceramic cylinder has a thin metal end cap edge-brazed to each end by means of a brazing paste containing active metal applied to the end surfaces of the cylinder prior to placing the end caps on the ceramic cylinder. Use of the brazing paste ensures that the entire end surfaces of the ceramic cylinder are coated with brazing metal.

A brazing paste gel has a composition of 1-4 wt. % hydroxypropylcellulose, 40-80 wt. % 1,2-propanediol, 18-58 wt. % 2-propanol. Alternatively, the composition may be 1-4 wt. % hydroxypropylcellulose, 20-70 wt. % 1,2-propanediol, 26-76 wt. % water.

A composite consists of a ceramic brazed to another ceramic by means of a joint layer therebetween. The joint layer comprises a porous metal interlayer and an active brazing filler metal penetrating through the porous metal interlayer.
