The present invention relates to methods for the collection of a sample from faecal material and, further, the detection of occult blood in or on the faecal material via the testing of the sample collected from the faecal material. The present invention also relates to collection methods comprising the use of a brush-like device having flexible or semi-flexible bristles wherein the brush-like device is contacted to the faecal material. The present invention also relates to detection of occult blood from the sample collected from the faecal material by means of a guaiac test or immunochromatographic test. The present invention additionally relates to the detection of one or more indicators of a pathological condition in or on the faecal material from which the sample is derived.

Disclosed is a testing device and methods for the identification of an analyte of interest in a sample. In a preferred embodiment, the testing device includes a front panel having at least one sample application aperture; a rear panel having at least one solvent application aperture; a sample collection matrix disposed between the rear panel and the front panel, the sample collection matrix being in communication with the sample and solvent application apertures of the front and rear panels; and at least one insertable test strip containing a reagent enabling detection of the analyte of interest.

A method for collecting a sample derived from faecal material, for example for occult blood testing, comprises contacting the faecal material with a fluid such as water and subsequently collecting a sample of the fluid with a brush or a brush-like device having flexible or semi-flexible bristles, wherein the sample of the fluid is collected within the bristles of the brush or brush-like device.

A chromatographic assay or test device for detection and/or determination of an analyte in a test sample, comprises a base member, and a chromatographic medium located in or on said base member, the base member being provided with a receptacle to receive an applicator having the sample applied thereto, and the applicator being movable when located in said receptacle between a first position in which the applicator is out of fluid contact with the chromatographic medium, and a second position in which the applicator is in fluid contact with the chromatographic medium so as to apply a sample on the applicator to the chromatographic medium. In an alternative aspect, the test device comprises a base member, and a second member, at least one of the base member and the second member including a chromatographic medium, and the second member being slidably movable with respect to the base member from a first position to a second position.

Chromatographic assay or test device

A chromatographic assay device according to the present invention provides a unidirectional immunoassay for an analyte in a whole blood sample with improved sensitivity and freedom from interference. Such a device comprises: (1) a first opposable component including: (a) a sample application zone containing a matrix of porous material permeable to the liquid portion of blood but capable of trapping the cellular components of blood; and (b) a chromatographic medium having first and second ends and including: (i) a detection zone having immobilized thereon a first specific binding partner for the analyte; and (ii) a conjugate zone having a labeled second specific binding partner for the analyte in a resolubilizable form; the sample application zone being in operable contact with the first end of the chromatographic medium and the conjugate zone being located closer to the first end of the chromatographic medium than the detection zone; and (2) a second opposable component including: (a) an applicator; and (b) an absorber. In the device, the first and second opposable components are brought into operable contact to cause the applicator to come into operable contact with the sample application zone to apply a wash liquid thereto and cause the absorber to come into operable contact with the second end of the chromatographic medium. Also within the scope of the invention are multiplex devices that can perform more than one assay simultaneously and test kits.

Opposable-element chromatographic assay device for detection of analytes in whole blood samples
