A triangulation system including a laser beam, optics focusing the laser beam on an object, a light detection unit detecting light reflected from the object due to impingement of the beam on the object, and an arrangement for determining, based on the detected light, object feature dimensions. The wavelength of the laser beam may be shorter than of infrared radiation, which allows for a reduced spot size without significant loss of depth of field. So as to reduce aberrations or a sensitivity to aberrations due to the shortened wavelength, the system may include (i) a polarization dependent coating matching the index of refraction of an element of the light detection unit to that of air for a range of angles, (ii) tilted projection optics, (iii) a prism wavefront corrector, and/or (iv) a positioning assembly, which provides for increased precision in positioning the laser diode with respect to a collimator lens.

Method and system for providing a high definition triangulation system

A three-dimensional inspection system and method is used to obtain information about three-dimensional articles with specular surfaces having a shape and positive or negative height by projecting a pattern of light onto the articles at an oblique angle. The system includes a patterned light projector with optical axis disposed at an oblique angle with respect to the plane of the article being inspected, an extended light source, and an image detector disposed above the article to detect the image of the pattern on the article. The light pattern includes lines with a substantially equal thickness and spacing. The spacing of the lines is greater than a spacing or pitch of the specular elements. An image processor, coupled to the image detector, receives the image, locates the lines, and measures the lateral shift of the lines. Height information is determined from the lateral shift and projection angle using triangulation.

Method for three-dimensional inspection using patterned light projection

A hand-held imager which is capable of reading both linear and two dimensional symbologies, which can perform focusing and illuminating steps quickly and accurately so as to eliminate variation in the position of the imager relative to the code becoming a negative factor, in which can operate in environment where the imager is anywhere from 1.5 inches to 16 inches from the code. The imager includes an imaging system having a focusing system, an illumination system, and a two-dimensional photodetector which forms an image of the coded symbology. After achieving targeting of the coded symbology, the scanning system adjusts the focus between multiple different focuses, and utilizes a portion of the two-dimensional photodetector to determine the optimum focus. Upon the determination of optimum focus, the focusing system is returned to the focusing configuration established in the initial focusing step, and an image is created using the entire two-dimensional photodetector. Optimum illumination is determined using the same two-dimensional photodetector.

Optical symbologies imager

An illumination apparatus is provided for a hand-held imager preferably to provide diffuse illumination for encoded symbology carried directly upon an article (component, etc) or upon a substrate carried by an article. The illumination apparatus is disposed proximate the front of the hand-held imager and is configured to permit light reflected from the target to pass through the illumination apparatus and onto a CCD image receiver. An array of unlensed LED's is disposed to cast approximately or substantially lambertian illumination in a direction away from the target to be imaged and into the hand-held housing to impinge upon surfaces of an illuminator to receive the illumination and, in turn, project efficient and diffuse dark field illumination through the array of unlensed LED's and towards and onto a location where a target to be imaged would be disposed. The illumination apparatus further includes a bright field illumination source including a plurality of forward facing (towards the target) lensed LED's.

Diffuse surface illumination apparatus and methods

A system and method for simultaneously obtaining a plurality of images of an object or pattern from a plurality of different viewpoints is provided. In an exemplary embodiment, proper image contrast is obtained by replacing the light sources of earlier systems with equivalent light sensitive devices and replacing the cameras of earlier systems with equivalent light sources. With such a system, bright-field images and dark-field images may be simultaneously obtained. In one aspect of the invention, a light source is positioned to illuminate at least a portion of an object. A plurality of light guides having input ends are positioned to simultaneously receive light reflected from the object and transmit the received light to a plurality of photodetectors. The light guides are arranged such that their respective input ends are spaced substantially equally along at least a portion of a surface of an imaginary hemisphere surrounding the object. The signals generated by the photodetectors (as a result of light detection) are processed and a plurality of images of the object are formed. Another aspect of the invention provides a method for generating composite images from simultaneously obtained images. Equivalent regions of each image (corresponding to geographically identical subpictures) are compared. The subpicture having the highest entropy is selected and stored. This process continues until all subpictures have been considered. A new composite picture is generated by pasting together the selected subpictures. In another aspect of the invention, the vector of relative light values gathered for each pixel or region of an object illuminated or scanned (i.e., one value for each photodetector) is used to determine reflectance properties of points or regions illuminated on the object or pattern. The reflectance properties may be stored in a matrix and the matrix used to read, for example, a Bar Code of a data matrix symbol.

Method and system for imaging an object or pattern

An imager for illuminating and imaging encoded symbology to facilitate decoding of the symbology and which provides both &ldquo;bright field&rdquo; and &ldquo;dark field&rdquo; illumination patterns is provided with an illumination directing device to direct the &ldquo;bright field&rdquo; illumination pattern into an alternative &ldquo;dark field&rdquo; illumination pattern. In one embodiment the illumination directing device takes the configuration of a disc that is selectively positionable in front of the imager and removable therefrom depending upon whether or not the illumination pattern is to be changed. The disc snap fits into a position at the front of the imager housing and includes a fresnel configured outer ring, a light blocking inner ring, and a light transmissive center. The fresnel configuration receives light and redirects the light forward of the imager and towards a center line passing through the device to provide the alternative illumination pattern. Other embodiments of illumination directing devices are to be carried by the imager for disposition in either operative or inoperative positions; while still other embodiments of illumination directing devices selectively position collimating lenses and reflective surfaces to receive and redirect light from the images or permit the light from the imager to provide an unmodified illumination pattern.

Optimal symbology illumination-apparatus and method

Diffuse &ldquo;dark field&rdquo; illumination and &ldquo;bright field&rdquo; illumination are each provided for a hand-held encoded symbology imager/reader; to be projected therefrom upon symbology disposed on a target (component part, goods, package, etc.). The imager/reader is encased in a housing ergonomically configured to be griped in more then one manner and to thus facilitate holding the imager/reader steady. The symbology to be imaged is targeted by a line that not only spots the symbology, but by extending a length commensurate with that of the symbology, indicates that the symbology is in the field of view of the imager/reader. A CCD, disposed to receive light reflected from the symbology, has its readout controlled so that only selected portions of the CCD need be analyzed for illumination and focusing purposes. To optimize imaging and decoding time, and to optimize use of power, readout from some portions of the CCD is accomplished in relatively rapid time by speeding up the readout of the CCD in some of its active area; while reverting back to a slower readout for data to be analyzed for illumination and focusing control and decoding purposes. In addition, special application of entropy principles facilitate determining the optimum focus and illumination conditions for the imager/reader.

Symbology imaging and reading apparatus and method

A method of operating a charge coupled device in an accelerated mode is provided, and in particular in connection with an optical symbology imager, so as to minimize variations in the position of the imager relative to the code. The CCD has two horizontal shift registers, each receiving every other scan line so that the output of each horizontal shift register equals the number of scan lines for normal television signals,The method skips through multiple lines of image data, then provides a black reference signal then images a series of lines at a slower speed, these lines being the lines of interest for focusing and illumination operations in the optical symbology imager. Finally, the remaining lines are passed through quickly. The imager goes back into reset mode after either normal or fast mode operation, and is thereby immediately ready to perform another scan. The fast mode operation enables the imager to obtain the approximately ten lines of image data of concern in only approximately 5.5 milliseconds, a significant time savings. This operation can be performed for some or all of the multiple optical positions.

Method of operating a charge coupled device in an accelerated mode, and in conjunction with an optical symbology imager

A three-dimensional inspection system is used to obtain three-dimensional information pertaining to an article having specular surfaces, such as a BGA device, by projecting a pattern of light onto the article at an oblique angle with respect to the article. The system includes patterned light projector having an optical axis disposed at an oblique angle with respect to the plane of the article being inspected and an image detector or camera disposed generally above the article being inspected to detect the image of the pattern projected on the article. The patterned light projector includes an extended light source that directs light along the optical axis and a light patterning member disposed at an angle with respect to the optical axis such that the light pattern is in focus in an image plane parallel to the plane of the article, thereby satisfying the Scheimpflug condition. The light pattern preferably includes lines of light projected onto the article with a substantially equal thickness and spacing. The spacing of the lines is preferably greater than a spacing or pitch of the specular elements, such as the solder balls on a BGA device. An image processor is coupled to the image detector to receive the image, locate the lines, and measure the lateral shift of the lines. Height information is determined from the lateral shift and projection angle using triangulation.

System and method for three-dimensional inspection using patterned light

A hand held, omnidirectional symbology or bar code reader for imaging linear and two dimensional (matrix, maxi-code) bar codes over relatively long working distances. The reader includes an imaging system including a focusing objective taking lens and a two-dimensional photodetector that operate to form an image of a bar code in X and Y directions simultaneously and generate an electrical signal representative of the code for subsequent downstream processing which extracts information embedded in a bar code. Focusing is achieved via a rotating disk that carries a plurality of optical shims for different focus zones. A through-the-lens (TTL) targeting system is provided to visually assist the user in positioning the reader for a variety of code modalities to assure that a bar code will be captured within the field of view and be sharply imaged on the photodetector when the lens is focused. Two different forms of artificial illumination are provided to accommodate nearby codes that may be either specular or partially diffuse and more distant codes where the reflection characteristics have less impact on code contrast. Elements of the photodetector are used to assess available light levels and activate the artificial illumination system when ambient light levels are low. Ranging through the lens using elements of the photodetector is included to provide information to set the focus of the objective lens in one of many possible focusing zones. All of the reader's components are housed in an ergonomically designed shell to reduce user repetitive stress injuries while providing access to a user interface and a protective cover for the reader's various systems.

Optical focusing device and method

A system for simultaneously obtaining a plurality of images of an object or pattern from a plurality of different viewpoints is provided. Proper image contrast is obtained by replacing the light sources of earlier systems with equivalent light sensitive devices and replacing the cameras of earlier systems with equivalent light sources. Bright-field and dark-field images may be simultaneously obtained. In another aspect, a light source is positioned to illuminate at least some of an object. A plurality of light guides are positioned to simultaneously receive light reflected from the object and transmit it to a plurality of photodetectors. The light guides are arranged so their respective input ends are spaced substantially equally along at least a portion of a surface of an imaginary hemisphere surrounding the object. The signals from the photodetectors are processed and a plurality of images are formed. Another aspect provides generating composite images from simultaneously obtained images. Equivalent regions of each image geographically identical subpictures) are compared. The subpicture having the highest entropy is selected and stored. This process continues for all subpictures. A new composite picture is generated by combining the selected subpictures. In another aspect, the vector of relative light values gathered for each pixel or region of an object illuminated or scanned is used to determine reflectance properties of points or regions illuminated on the object or pattern. The reflectance properties may be stored in a matrix and the matrix used to read, for example, a Bar Code of a data matrix symbol.

A presence of a polarization altering substance on a specular surface is detected by transmitting light from a single strobed light source to the surface over a transmitting path and receiving the transmitted light from the surface. An intensity of the light is measured in both an optical non-isolator state and an isolator state by a same detector by delaying the non-isolated return light for a definite period of time before measuring it with the detector. The measured isolated and non-isolated intensities are converted to logarithmic form, range corrected, and compared to reference data established for the specific specular surface being investigated to detect the presence or absence of the polarization altering substance. Attenuation and backscattering effects of scattering and/or absorbing interference in the transmitted light are compensated so that the reference table is entered at the correct point. Using different intensities of transmitted light increases the dynamic range of the system.

System for detecting ice or snow on surface which specularly reflects

A focusable imaging system particularly suitable for use in acquiring digital images for subsequent processing such as in a hand held, omnidirectional symbology or bar code reader by which linear and two dimensional (matrix, maxi-code) bar codes may be imaged over relatively long working distances. The imaging system includes an focusing objective taking lens and a two-dimensional photodetector that operate to form an image of an object such as a bar code in X and Y directions simultaneously and generate an electrical signal representative of the object or code for subsequent downstream processing by which information embedded in the object or bar code may be extracted. Focusing is achieved via a rotating disk that carries a plurality of optical shims or other light controlling surfaces to provide for different focus zones. A through-the-lens (TTL) targeting system is provided to visually assist the user in positioning the reader for a variety of code modalities to assure that a bar code or the like will be captured within the field of view and be sharply imaged on the photodetector when the lens is focused. Two different forms of artificial illumination are provided to accommodate nearby objects or codes that may be either specular or partially diffuse and more distant objects or codes where the reflection characteristics have less impact on image contrast. Elements of the photodetector are used to assess available light levels and activate the artificial illumination system when ambient light levels are low. Ranging through the lens using elements of the photodetector is included to provide information to set the focus of the objective lens in one of many possible focusing zones.

Variable focus optical system

A system and method for correcting a scan pattern of a moving optical scanning system. A gantry moves an optical system at a constant rate in a first direction. Using a light source and a first deflector, the optical scanning system quickly sweeps a light beam in a direction orthogonal to the motion of the gantry by changing the angle of deflection of the first deflector linearly with time. To compensate for the motion of the gantry, the optical system includes a second deflector which deflects the light, the deflection angle being determined as a function of the velocity of the gantry. The deflected light is focussed on the object (or pattern). Accordingly, the object is scanned along a corrected scan line orthogonal to the X-axis. The optical scanning system may optionally perform 'selected' scanning. Also, the optical system optionally employs a 'look-ahead/look-behind' scanning approach to further improve the rate at which portions of an object (or pattern) may be inspected.
