The subject invention is a new type of silica gel and process for producing the same. The silica gel is the product of gelling alkali metal silicate with excess acid in aqueous medium containing a minute amount a polymerization modifier. The modifier and salts from the resulting gel are then leached with water before substantial drying effects have ensued. Spray-dried gel particles do not require the additional steps of aging or ammonia treating to achieve the desired result of high surface area and high pore volume. The gel can be produced to have various useful and unusual characteristics including the combination of high surface area, high pore volume, and a large average pore diameter.

Silica gel

There is provided an improved process for producing a silica gel having improved pore volume relative to conventional silica gels which comprises the steps of gelling an aqueous alkali metal silicate with an aqueous acid, washing the resulting gel to remove salt or salts and acid, and soaking the gel in an aqueous solution of a water soluble aluminum salt to impart from 0.1% to 0.7% by weight aluminum on the dry basis to said gel, drying and reducing the particle size of the dried gel to from 2.0 to 15 microns, said particles having a pore volume in the range of 1.25 to 2.25 cm.sup.3 /gram. and a product produced by said process.

Stabilized silica gel and process for making same

Silica flatting agents having improved flatting and settling characteristics and which impart improved mar resistance to certain coatings are prepared by treating a silica hydrogel in the absence of dispersion or emulsifying agents with up to 14 parts by weight of specific mixtures of microcrystalline waxes and synthetic waxes in the respective ratios of from 1:1.5 to 1:12.
