Disclosed herein is a rubber composition comprising a rubber and particulate kaolin clay as a filler wherein: the kaolin particles have a particle size distribution such that at least about 95% of the particles, relative to the volume of the particles, have a particle diameter less than 3&#x3bc;m. The particulate kaolin particles may comprise calcined kaolin chosen from at least one of particulate soak calcined kaolin and particulate flash calcined kaolin. The rubber composition can comprise additional particulate fillers including those chosen from silica, carbon black, and other particulate fillers. Also disclosed herein is a process for producing such a composition, and the method of using a cured form of the composition in a rubber composition, such as a vehicle tire composition.

Clay mineral products and their use in rubber compositions

There is disclosed a polymer composition comprising a polymer resin and, as opacifier, a flash calcined kaolin clay filler and a TiO. The polymer composition may be formed into shaped articles, particularly polyolefin film.

Opacified polymer composition

A method of improving the strength and/or plasticity of a clay composition comprising a kandite clay and an organic additive comprising at least one water soluble compound having a plurality of basic groups wherein the organic additive is present in an amount of from about 0.05% by weight to about 0.5% by weight based on the dry weight of the kandite clay present, which method comprises treating the kandite clay by adding thereto a monovalent ion activated smectite clay or a monovalent ion activating agent for a smectite clay or both whereby the amount of monovalent ion activated non-calcined smectite clay present in the clay composition is adjusted to be in the range from about 1% by weight to about 5% by weight based upon the dry weight of the kandite clay present.

Process for producing clay compositions for use in slip casting

Particles containing enzyme or optical brightener in a mixture with particles containing peroxy bleach, surfactant or builder stabilized during storage by coating the former and/or the latter particles with clay, e.g. bentonite.

Stabilized particulate composition

There is provided an elastomeric composition including a kaolinitic clay mineral filler, characterised in that said kaolinitic clay mineral (a) is a hydrous kaolinitic clay mineral which has a content of non-exchangeable alkali metal cations not exceeding 10,000 ppm (parts by weight per million parts by weight of dry clay) and a content of exchangeable alkali metal cations not exceeding 750 ppm or (b) is a calcined kaolinitic clay mineral prepared by calcining a hydrous kaolinitic clay mineral having a content of non-exchangeable alkali metal cations not exceeding 10,000 ppm and a content of exchangeable alkali metal cations not exceeding 750 ppm.

There is disclosed a particulate inorganic material, suitable for use in a detergent composition, comprising base granules of a smectite clay coated with a white inorganic material. Also disclosed is a detergent composition comprising a particulate inorganic material and a process for making the particulate inorganic material.

There is disclosed a granular detergent composition comprising granules of a chemical reagent the surfaces of which are provided with a coating comprising an organophilic clay mineral.

There is disclosed a method for preparing a thickened cleaning composition containing sulphamic acid, according to which an aqueous suspension of a particulate smectite clay suspension is formed, which is mixed with the sulphamic acid to form a thickened aqueous solution of the acid.

An organo-clay is prepared by treating a clay mineral of the smectite type with a mixture of di(lower alkyl) arylkyl (higher alkyl) ammonium compound and a di(lower alkyl) di(higher alkyl) ammonium compound and thereafter subjecting the treated clay mineral to high shear mixing for a time sufficient to dissipate in the mixture at least 100 KJ of energy per Kg of dry solids in the mixture. The organo-clay is useful in gelling compositions containing one or more liquid aliphatic alcohols.

Viscosifying alcoholic media

There is disclosed a organophilic composition which comprises a mixture of a smectite clay and a particulate second inorganic material, the mixture having been treated with a quaternary ammonium compound which is capable of rendering the smectite clay organophilic and the second inorganic material constituting at least 10% by weight of the mixture of smectite clay, second inorganic material and quaternary ammonium compound. The organophilic composition is useful for gelling organic solvents and compositions containing organic solvents.

Organophilic compositions

An organophillic clay gellant which is readily dispersible in unsaturated polyester resin compositions without requiring first being dispersed in styrene to form a pregel, and the process of preparation thereof, are described.

Dispersible organoclay for unsaturated polyester resins

An organoclay is prepared by mixing a quaternary ammonium compound with an aqueous suspension of a smectite clay in proportions such that there are present from 75 to 110 milliequivalents of quaternary ammonium cation per 100 g of dry smectite clay, thereafter subjecting the smectite clay/quaternary ammonium compound/water mixture to high shear mixing for a time sufficient to dissipate in the mixture at least 100 KJ of energy per kg. of dry solids in the mixture; and then dewatering the product thus obtained.

Organoclays

There is disclosed an organophilic composition which comprises a mixture of a smectite clay and a particulate second inorganic material, the mixture having been treated with a quaternary ammonium compound which is capable of rendering the smectite clay organophilic and the second inorganic material constituting at least 10% by weight of the mixture of smectite clay, second inorganic material and quaternary ammonium compound. The organophilic composition is useful for gelling organic solvents and compositions containing organic solvents.

A granule comprises an inner core, which is formed from a material which does not expand appreciably in the presence of organic compounds, and an outer shell formed from an organo-clay which is preferably held on the inner core with the aid of a binder. The granule can be prepared by tumbling a particle of the inner core material in admixture with a powdered organo-clay and a binder therefor. A particulate bed of the granules can be used for separating organic compounds from a mixture thereof with an aqueous medium.

Resin-containing compositions, e.g. unsaturated polyester or epoxy resin compositions, are prepared using an organoclay of improved dispersibility. The organoclay is prepared by suspending a smectite clay in water to form a fluid suspension; treating the suspension with a solution of an inorganic salt, the cation of which has a valency of at least two, the concentration of the salt being such as to flocculate the smectite clay substantially completely; mixing the suspension of the flocculated smectite clay with a quaternary ammonium compound, at least one of the four alkyl groups of which has from 10 to 24 carbon atoms; and dewatering the resultant product.
