An electronic device that receives a signal indicative of the sound made my a musical instrument in order to determine the instantaneous rate of play of melodic notes on that instrument in terms of notes played per second and display the rate in real time via a display. The regularity of the musician's rate of play is further indicated by the stability of the display reading. Individual sustained melodic notes are identified utilizing differential capacitance and circuit delay time constants to generate a voltage differential in response to a step signal. The device is also selectively operable as a conventional metronome to provide an exemplary sound cue to the musician corresponding to a given number of notes per second and convertible by a switch or foot pedal to monitor the musicians rate of play as he tries to match the demonstrated rate.

A technique for managing the streaming of digital video content to multiple clients involves identifying an attribute of a content element that is streamed to a client and selecting a protection mechanism for the content element as a function of the attribute, wherein the protection mechanism enables streaming of the content element to the clients in the event of a resource failure. In an example, the identified attribute is an indication of the popularity of the content element (e.g., as measured by the number of active streams), such that the protection mechanism is selected as a function of the popularity of the content element. In an embodiment, protection mechanisms that offer a higher level of protection are selected for the more popular content elements and protection mechanisms that offer a lower level of protection are selected for the less popular content elements.

A shoe includes a shoe upper sized for receiving a range of foot sizes from a minimum foot size to a maximum foot size. A growth indicator is connected with the shoe upper and includes an indicator for indicating when the foot of a wearer is equal to or greater than the maximum size of the range of foot sizes.

Growth indicator for children's shoes

A frangible hollow point bullet is disclosed. The bullet (or slug) is formed from a frangible material such as sintered copper to provide a bullet-shaped body. A plurality of coaxial, substantially cylindrical cavities having progressively decreasing bore diameters are formed in the nose of the bullet-shaped body, extending rearwardly therefrom, to provide a bullet that both expands and fragments in a semicontrolled fashion upon impact with a target. In a preferred embodiment, at least one of the coaxial cavities is multiply scored to provide a substantially symmetric fragmentation pattern and controlled and uniform fragment size. Controlling the aggregate depth of the coaxial cavities enables the retention of a recoverable base or shank that is suitable for ballistic investigation following bullet impact. Bullets and slugs, made in accordance with the present invention, have standard calibers and, when incorporated into conventional cartridges and shotgun shell casings respectively, may be fired at subsonic, sonic or supersonic velocities by conventional weapons.

Frangible bullet

A shoe having an expandable shoe upper includes an outsole having a rear outsole and a front outsole and an expandable insole with a rear insole and a front insole. The front insole is movable relative to a length of the rear insole as the shoe upper expands from an unexpanded position to a fully expanded position. As the shoe upper expands, a gap is created between the heel and front outsole. At least one of the front insole and the rear insole covers the gap to protect a wearer's foot in an area of the gap when the shoe upper and expandable insole expand toward the fully expanded position.

Shoe having a floating insole

A shoe that includes an expansible inner lining that snugly conforms to the wearer's foot and that permits the wearer's foot to grow at least one shoe size, and preferably approximately two shoe sizes. The shoe may optionally include a midsole disposed between the insole and outsole. The shoe may also optionally include an expandable counter that permits the heel portion of the shoe to adapt as the wearer's foot grows. The inventive shoe thus permits the wearer's foot to grow or expand widthwise and/or lengthwise thereby reducing the frequency with which shoes must be replaced and without sacrificing fit, support and comfort. The expansible lining may be constructed of any four-way expandable, porous material. A transparent toe portion and a fit indicator may be provided to assist in determining when the wearer's foot has grown too large for the shoe.

An improved shoe outsole having an elastic shank (12) and suitable for outdoor wear, outsole portions (14,16) comprised of semi-rigid material for forming same, and a shoe (10) incorporating the improved outsole are disclosed. The front outsole portion (14) has a ledge (22) extending widthwise across the back end thereof and the rear outsole portion (16) has a ledge (24) extending widthwise across the front end thereof, such that the elastic shank (12) is joinable to the outsole portions (14,16) by means extending through the shank (12) and the ledges (22,24).

An outsole (10) for incorporation in a shoe or the like includes a generally shoe-shaped member of rubber-like material lower portion (14) contiguous with the lower surface of having an upper surface and a ground contacting bottom surface (19), the bottom surface (19) having a pair of depressed regions (21), (25) therein positioned for alignment with the heel and the ball of the foot, the bottom surface (19) surrounding the depressions (21), (25) and extending therebetween for supporting the foot about the ball and heel and in the shank region, respectively. In a preferred embodiment, the depressions (21, 25) are generally oval-shaped and concave, and generally triangular indentations (32) are formed in the bottom surface 19 on either side of the shank region (23), the ground contacting bottom surface (19) thereby presenting the general appearance of a figure eight.

An elongated support arm is provided and pivotally supported from an elevated portion of one marginal portion of a vehicle onto whose top a boat is to be placed. The support arm is pivoted to the vehicle for swaying movement of the arm about a horizontal axis generally parallelling the marginal portion of the vehicle from which it is supported between a lowered position with the free end of the arm inclined downwardly and outwardly for contact with the surface upon which the vehicle rests and a raised position with the free end of the arm swung upward to a position with the arm vertically disposed and the free end thereof generally aligned with the top of the vehicle onto which the associated boat is to be positioned. The elevated portion of the vehicle to which the support arm is pivotally attached is disposed at a height equal to at least one half the effective length of the support arm and the free end of the support arm includes mounting structure pivotally supported from the support arm and releasably anchorable to the upper marginal portion of a boat to be loaded on top of the vehicle.
