An adjustable matching network is provided for a wireless communications device transmitting and receiving signals in multiple frequency bands via an antenna. The adjustable matching network selectively connecting the antenna to a select power amplifier corresponding to a selected transmit frequency band and automatically matching the impedance of the antenna to the select power amplifier. The adjustable matching network also selectively connecting the antenna to a select bandpass filter corresponding to a selected receive frequency band and automatically matching the impedance of the antenna to the select bandpass filter.

Adaptive antenna optimization network

Antennas for a communications device and wireless terminals are provided. A conductive element is provided along with a ground assembly including a ground element coupled to the conductive element. The ground element has a first state and a second state. The first state provides a first resonant frequency band when the ground element is in a first relative position that is a first distance from the conductive element. The second state provides a second frequency band when the ground element is in a second relative position that is a second distance, different from the first distance, from the conductive element.

Antennas having multiple resonant frequency bands and wireless terminals incorporating the same

A wireless communications device includes an integrated antenna assembly that provides signals associated with multiple functions to the wireless communications device. The integrated antenna assembly includes an integrated antenna housing coupled to a radiotelephone housing and multiple antennas. The integrated antenna housing can include a first antenna that provides GPS signal reception for a GPS receiver and a second antenna that provides communications signals to and from a radiotelephone processor in the radiotelephone housing. The first and second antennas can be mounted on an antenna backing having a first face and a second face. The first and second antennas may be located on the same face of the antenna backing or on opposite faces of the antenna backing. The integrated antenna assembly also can include a third antenna located between the first and second antennas. In this case, the first and second antennas are high-band antennas and the third antenna, located therebetween, is a low-band antenna which can reduce the electromagnetic coupling between the first and second high-band antennas.

Integrated antenna assemblies including multiple antennas for wireless communications devices

Small, low cost, notch antennas are provided that can be internally incorporated into the existing structure of wireless communicators, and that are functional in a variety of orientations of the wireless communicator. The notch antenna is preferably formed in the ground plane conductor of a printed circuit board (PCB) that has RF circuitry thereon for receiving and transmitting RF signals. The notch preferably has a configuration that results in electromagnetic waves having a substantially omnidirectional radiation pattern being radiated from the notch when RF signals are applied to the notch. Integrating the antenna function into the same printed circuit board (PCB) on which the transmitter and/or receiver functions are also located eliminates the need for an additional antenna component. However, if necessary, a notch antenna surface component is also provided.

Notch antennas and wireless communicators incorporating same

A personal communications terminal includes a telephone unit and an application processing unit that are operatively connected. The telephone unit includes a first RF transceiver for communicating with a cellular communications network via an external dipole antenna. The application processing unit includes a short range transceiver and antenna for connecting the computing device with an external computer or local area network. The short range antenna is a slot antenna formed by a slot in the housing of the personal communications terminal.

An indirect electrical coupling for a cellular telephone antenna is created by a rotary primary antenna and a stationary paging antenna when the primary antenna is extended into an operative position. When extended, the primary antenna is positioned proximate to the secondary antenna to define an electrical coupling therebetween. Rotating the primary antenna away from the extended position automatically disengages the primary antenna from the telephone operating circuit. The antenna elements or antenna spacings provide the appropriate matching circuitry and the advancement and retraction of the primary antenna provides the switching of the matching circuitry.

Dual-band retractable radiotelephone antennas have an elongated antenna element, a top load element, and a trap positioned between and electrically connected to the elongated antenna element and the top load element. The trap facilitates obtaining half-wave monopole performance at a first frequency band and half-wave monopole performance at a second higher frequency band.

Antenna systems for use within wireless communication devices such as radiotelephones are provided and include an internal multi-frequency band antenna and an elongated antenna member that is retractable. The elongated antenna member is extendible from the housing of a communications device so as to have an extended position and a retracted position. The elongated antenna member includes an elongated conductive element that is capacitively coupled with the multi-frequency band antenna when the elongated antenna member is in the extended position. The multi-frequency band antenna is electrically isolated from the elongated conductive element when the elongated antenna member is in the retracted position. When the elongated antenna member is in an extended position, the elongated conductive element is configured to resonate as a half-wave monopole antenna when the internal antenna resonates within a first frequency band. The elongated conductive element is configured to resonate as a full-wave monopole antenna when the internal antenna resonates within a second frequency band.

Antenna systems having capacitively coupled internal and retractable antennas and wireless communicators incorporating same

An electronic device, such as a radiotelephone, has a magnetic latch that maintains a flip cover in a closed position and an electromagnetic release conveniently positioned for one-handed operation by a user. A first magnetic object is disposed within the housing and a second magnetic object is disposed within the flip cover so as to be magnetically attracted to the first magnetic object when the flip cover is in the closed position. The first and second magnetic objects are configured such that the magnetic attraction force therebetween is greater than the biasing force of the spring member to maintain the flip cover in the closed position. A user-activated magnetic field generator is disposed adjacent to at least one of the first and second magnetic objects and reduces the magnetic attraction force between the first and second magnetic objects relative to the biasing force of the spring member such that the flip cover is urged to the open position.

Magnetic latch and release device and radiotelephones incorporating same

Shields for radiotelephones with a retractable antenna include a conductive tubular antenna guide operably associated with an electronic ground, and preferably configured to form an inductor or capacitor in a matching circuit operable when the antenna is in the retracted position. Associated methods include directing RF radiation produced by the antenna positioned internal to the radiotelephone along a longitudinal exit path out of the radiotelephone.

Shielding for radiotelephones with retractable antennas

A radiotelephone housing includes an antenna enclosure extending outwardly therefrom having an internal passage configured to receive an internally-mounted antenna therewithin. The antenna enclosure is integrally formed with the radiotelephone housing such that an antenna secured therewithin is protected from damage caused by impact forces to the radiotelephone. An electronic substrate hosting a transceiver preferably includes an antenna extending from an end portion thereof that is configured to be inserted within the antenna enclosure. A coaxial connector or other electro-mechanical connecting device is not required for connecting the antenna to the transceiver.

Integral antenna assembly and housing for electronic device

Radiotelephones having retractable antenna systems include an antenna, a housing with a transceiver and user interface disposed therein and a non-radiating antenna feed coupled to both the antenna and the transceiver. The non-radiating feed is movably mounted within and extendible from the housing so as to have an extended position and a retracted position. In one embodiment, the antenna is physically supported by the non-radiating feed and is thus mounted in an extended state when the non-radiating feed is in an extended position. and is mounted in a retracted state when the non-radiating feed is in the retracted position. Preferably, the antenna exhibits approximately the same electrical length in both the extended and retracted states, and the antenna is substantially isolated from the housing of the radiotelephone when the antenna is in the extended state.

Retractable radiotelephone antennas with extended feeds

Retractable antennas with quarter wave-quarter wave resonances for telephones, and which are particularly suitable for radiotelephones, include a retractable antenna with a top load element, a spatially separated rod element, and a cylindrical support conductor positioned therebetween. The cylindrical support conductor is structurally configured to receive a portion of the rod therein to add structural rigidity to the antenna and to define a coaxial capacitor between the rod and the conductor when the antenna is in the extended position.

Quarter-wave quarter-wave retractable antenna

Dual-band antennas include first and second radiating elements configured to be enclosed within a radiotelephone between a keypad and a top housing and to occupy available space existing around the perimeter of the keypad and/or between the keys of a keypad. First and second coplanar radiating elements are maintained in adjacent spaced-apart relationship with a circuit board underlying the keypad. The underlying circuit board serves as a ground plane for directing radiation from the antenna outwardly in a direction normal to the circuit board.

Non-protruding dual-band antenna for communications device

Radiotelephones configured with integrated matching circuit components in the housing and antenna are disclosed. The present invention configures the antenna and the associated housing receiving passage to define a capacitor and inductor to match the differing impedances generated by retractable top load antennas (retracted and extended impedances) without requiring a separate switching circuit and wiping contacts.
