An internal combustion engine crankcase ventilation rotating coalescer includes an annual rotating coalescing filter element, an inlet port supplying blow by gas from the crankcase to the hollow interior of the annular rotating coalescing filter element, and an outlet port delivering clean separated, air from the exterior of the rotating element. The direction of flow by gas inside-out, radially, outwardly from the hollow interior to the exterior.

A gas-liquid rotating coalescer includes first and second sets of one or more detent surfaces on a rotary drive member and a driven annular rotating coalescing filter element which engagingly interact in interlocking mating keyed relation to effect rotation of the coalescing filter element by the rotary drive member. Designated operation of the coalescer requires that the coalescing filter element include the second set of detent surfaces. A coalescing filter element missing the second set of detent surfaces will not effect the noted designated operation.

A gas-liquid rotating separator has first and second sets of magnetically permeable members magnetically interacting with each other to effect rotation of a separator element. A nonauthorized replacement separator element missing the second set of magnetically permeable members will not effect designated operation, thus ensuring, at maintenance servicing, installation of an authorized replacement separator element.

A closed crankcase ventilation system for an internal combustion engine includes a return duct with a variably controlled air-oil coalescer. In a turbocharger version, cleaned separated air is provided to the turbocharger inlet, and the coalescer is variably controlled according to a given condition of the turbocharger and/or the engine and/or the coalescer.

An internal combustion engine crankcase ventilation rotating coalescer includes an annular rotating coalescing filter element, an inlet port supplying blowby gas from the crankcase to the hollow interior of the annular rotating coalescing filter element, and an outlet port delivering cleaned separated air from the exterior of the rotating element. The direction of blowby gas is inside-out, radially outwardly from the hollow interior to the exterior.

The water trap ( ) is laterally adjacent to the muffler housing ( ) and below the housing upper outlet ( ) and traps and drains water entering the exhaust pipe ( ) from the terminal end ( ).
