A curing agent is made by admixing (a) an irradiated mixture of carboxylic acid anhydride and carbon containing cyclic compound and (b) a polyhhydric alcohol, where the curing agent can be added to a resin such as an epoxy resin, applied to the surface of an article, and cured.

A coated article is made by: (1) admixing an epoxy resin, with a dual curing agent admixture of (a) an irradiated mixture of carboxylic acid anhydride and carbon containing cyclic compound and (b) a boron trihalide complex selected from at least one of boron trihalide:amine and boron trihalide:ether, (2) applying the mixed resin and concentrated dual curing agent to the surface of an article, and (3) curing the applied resin and curing agent.

Epoxy coating compositions containing a dual mixture of a boron

Disclosed is an epoxy rubber made by reacting about 5 to about 50% of an epoxy terminated acrylonitrilebutadiene copolymer with about 50 to about 95% of a solid epoxy resin. A coating powder is prepared with about 30 to about 70% of a solid epoxy resin, about 2 to about 25% of the epoxy rubber, about 5 to about 25% of an anhydride curing agent, about 5 to about 40% mica filler, and about 10 to about 50% glass fiber. Electrical apparatus, such as coils made of served wire, can be coated with the powder by heating the apparatus above the melting point of the powder and dipping it in the fluidized powder, followed by curing the melted powder on the apparatus.

A photosensitive sag resistant composition is made containing cycloaliphatic epoxy resin, a flexibilizing agent, arc and track resistant filler, thixotroping agent, and an amount of a photosensitive compound effective to initiate gelation with ultraviolet light exposure, where the composition is resistant to sag upon application to a surface, and has chemical and physical resistance to arced SF.sub.6 upon cure.

Disclosed is a conductor coated with a fused and cured powder applied insulating coating over which is a coating of an ultraviolet B-stageable, thermally C-stageable liquid resin. The coating is cured to the B-stage and strands of the conductor are placed side-by-side. The coating is then cured to the C-stage which fuses the strands of the conductor into a solid mass. The adhesive coated conductors may be used to form transformer coils, transposed cables, or other articles.

Disclosed is a solventless UV dryable B-stageable epoxy adhesive which comprises about 40 to about 70 pbw of a solid thermally curable epoxy having a molecular weight between about 650 and about 4000, a thermal curing agent for the thermally curable epoxy which is stable at room temperature and soluble on the adhesive in an amount of about stoichiometric to about 50% by weight in excess of stoichiometric, up to about 2 pbw of an accelerator for the thermal curing agent which is soluble in the adhesive, about 25 to about 60 pbw of a liquid UV curable resin having a molecular weight of less than about 700 which is either an epoxy, an acrylic, or a mixture thereof and which is a diluent for the thermally curable epoxy, about 1 to about 10 pbw of a UV photoinitiator for the UV curable resin, up to about 20 pbw of a reactive diluent, up to about 5 pbw of a flow control agent, up to about 1 pbw of a surfactant, and up to about 10 pbw of a tri or higher functional epoxy.

Solventless UV dryable B-stageable epoxy adhesive

A coating powder is disclosed which is prepared from a solventless non-aqueous composition of a solid epoxy resin having an epoxy equivalent weight of about 400 to about 8000, a Durran's softening point of at least 70.degree., a solid polyanhydride curing agent at least about 50 mole % of which is trimellitic anhydride, and a cross-linking agent having the general formula R.sub.3 SnX where each R is selected from alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, and alkaryl up to C.sub.20 and X is selected from acetate, propionate, butyrate, halogen, and hydroxyl. The composition is dry-blended and then melt-mixed at 50.degree. to 150.degree. C. To prepare the coating powder, it is then cooled, crushed, and ground to a particle size of less than 100 microns. The coating powder is electrostatically applied to a conductor and is cured above the melting point of the resin.

A porous, electrical insulating adhesive substrate is made by (A) electrostatically coating a flexible sheet material with heat reactive adhesive resin particles, having an average particle size of between about 1 micron to 2,000 microns, the adhesive particles are applied in a predetermined pattern on the sheet covering from about 10 percent to 90 percent of the sheet material area, the area between the resin pattern not being coated; and then (B) heating the patterned coated sheet material between about 65.degree. C to 250.degree. C, forming a discontinuous, 0.25 mil to 25 mil (0.006 mm to 0.635 mm) thick, dry coating pattern of heat reactive adhesive particles bonded to the sheet material, said heat reactive adhesive coating covering from about 10 percent to 90 percent of the sheet material area; the patterned coated sheet may then be inserted as an oil permeable layer insulation between high voltage windings and low voltage windings and between layers of high and low voltage windings in a wound coil assembly, after which the assembly can be heated at a temperature and for a time effective to securely bond the winding layers together, and thus provide a porous, oil permeable, bonded transformer coil assembly.

Apparatus for making electrical coils using patterned dry resin coated

A coating powder is made by hot melt mixing a composition of three diglycidyl ethers of bisphenol A, a pre-prepared epoxy ester, and a curing agent containing trimellitic anhydride. The composition is cooled to form a solid which is ground into a powder. Wire or other articles are coated with the coating powder in an electrostatic fluidized bed or with an electrostatic gun and the powder is cured.

Wire is cleaned by passing it through an electrolytic cleaner then through an ultrasonic rinse. The electrolytic cleaner comprises a graphite tube through which the wire passes, an alkaline aqueous solution between the wire and the graphite tube, and an electric current, at least half D.C., between the wire and the graphite tube.
