The processes include polycondensing diols in the presence of an acid catalyst and adding base continuously over a period of the polycondensation reaction. The present invention relates to a process of manufacture of polytrimethylene ether glycol, in which one or more inorganic compounds selected from an inorganic salt and an inorganic base is utilized during certain purification steps to reduce phase separation time.

A process of manufacture of polytrimethylene ether glycol comprising: (a) polycondensing reactant comprising diol selected from the group consisting of 1,3-propanediol, 1,3-propanediol dimer and 1,3-propanediol trimer or mixtures thereof in the presence of acid polycondensation catalyst to form polytrimethylene ether glycol; (b) adding water to the polytrimethylene ether glycol and hydrolyzing the acid esters formed during the polycondensation to form a hydrolyzed mixture containing the polytrimethylene ether glycol and the hydrolyzed acid esters; (c) adding organic solvent that is miscible with water to the hydrolyzed mixture to form an aqueous-organic mixture comprising (i) organic phase containing polytrimethylene ether glycol and residual acid polycondensation catalyst from the polycondensing and (ii) water phase; (d) separating the water phase and the organic phase; (e) adding base to the separated organic phase to neutralize the residual acid polycondensation catalyst by forming salts of the residual acid polycondensation catalyst; (f) separating the organic phase into (i) liquid phase comprising the polytrimethylene ether glycol, the organic solvent and any residual water, and (ii) solid phase comprising the salts of the residual acid polycondensation catalyst and the base which is unreacted; and (g) removing the organic solvent and the residual water from the organic phase to obtain polytrimethylene ether glycol.

A random polytrimethylene ether ester prepared by polycondensation of 1,3-propanediol reactant and about 10 to about 0.1 mole % of aliphatic or aromatic diacid or diester, as well as its manufacture and use thereof.

Polytrimethylene ether esters

A process for making partially aromatic polyamides is provided in which an aromatic dicarboxylic acid component, at least 20-100% by weight of the dicarboxylic acid in the acid component is in the form of an alkylated ester, and a diamine component, comprising a diamine having from 6-12 carbon atoms, are admixed in the presence of water and with heating to form polyamide having from 1-100% on a molar basis of N-alkylated amide and amine groups. The polyamides are particularly useful in the manufacture of products intended for use at elevated temperatures or products in which retention of properties at elevated temperatures is required, including articles using injection molding technology, parts for automotive end-uses and electronics. The polyamides can also be formed into films and fibers for use in associated products.

Partially aromatic polyamides and a process for making them

A multi-stage process for the manufacture of branched aliphatic polyamides is provided. The process comprises the steps, in sequence, of feeding to a reactor a slurry of at least one aliphatic dinitrile, and at least one aliphatic diamine, at least one of which is branched, in the presence of 0.05 to 2% by weight of a phosphorous-containing compound, with the incremental addition of water, heating the slurry to a temperature of at least 270&deg; C. while maintaining a pressure of at least 1.2 Mpa, venting water, ammonia and other volatile matter from the reactor while maintaining the temperature and pressure, maintaining the temperature for a further period of time while reducing the pressure to at least atmospheric pressure and then discharging the polyamide so formed. Polyamides made by this process are substantially the same as corresponding polyamides made by the conventional salt-strike process, and can be used in molding, coating and film applications. Examples of polyamides that can be made using this process include those formed from an admixture of adiponitrile and 2-methyl pentamethylene diamine, and from an admixture of 2-methyl glutaronitrile and hexamethylene diamine.

Manufacture of branched polyamides

A process for the manufacture of a partially aromatic polyamide is disclosed. The process comprises the polymerization stages of, in sequence, feeding to a reactor a slurry of at least one aromatic dicarboxylic acid and at least one aliphatic diamine, then with the incremental addition of water and in the presence of 0.05 to 2% by weight of a monocarboxylic acid, heating the slurry to a temperature of at least 270.degree. C. while maintaining a pressure of at least 1.2 MPa. The preferred dicarboxylic acid is 2,6 naphthalene dicarboxylic acid. The polyamides may be used in the manufacture of products using melt processing techniques.

Manufacture of partially aromatic polyamides

A process for increasing the molecular weight of a polymer, comprising subjecting said polymer to electromagnetic radiation in the presence of a paramagnetic metallic catalyst for a sufficient period of time to significantly increase the molecular weight of the polymer, said polymer being either in solution or in a molten state and said radiation having a frequency in the range of about 0.9 to 10 GHz. The preferred paramagnetic catalysts are metallic nickel, iron or cobalt. The preferred polymers are polyamides and polyolefins.
