First and second indicators of a first available amount of an air-interface resources associated with a first and second channel, respectively, is received. A request for an allocation of an amount of the air-interface resource is received. Based on the request for the allocation, first and second ranking values associated with the first and second channels, respectively are determined. The first and second ranking values are selected such that the efficient allocations receive higher ranks. Based on the first ranking value and the second ranking value, the first frequency band is selected to provide the allocation of the amount of the air-interface resource.

Carrier selection

A system and methodology for network planning in which a software based tool provides network engineers with the capability to more precisely plan for traffic loading within the network on a cell site by cell site basis. Thus for each cell site, variations in geographic location, device mix, historical usage patterns and other factors are taken into account to allow for more accurate network planning and for more efficient use of capital. Cell sites with a higher traffic profile based upon historic device mix and usage patterns will be associated with lower OSF values thus enhancing the user experience for a device user in communication with that cell site. On the other hand, for cell sites with a lesser traffic profile, a higher OSF value is ascribed thus allowing for capital to be deployed elsewhere while still maintaining a positive user experience for users relying on that cell site.

Traffic planning in a network using a variable oversubscription factor

An indicator of throughput for one or more network elements is received. A plurality of slots are allocated to a plurality of devices that are operating using a plurality of combinations of modulation and coding. This allocation is based upon the indicator of throughput for the one or more network elements. An indicator of throughput for one or more network elements is received. A plurality of requests for wireless throughput are received from a plurality of wireless devices. Wireless throughput for each of the plurality of wireless devices is allocated based on a wireless throughput indicator associated with each of the plurality of wireless devices and the indicator of throughput.

Wireless slot allocation

A wireless device is communicated with using a first throughput. A predicted location for the wireless device is determined. Based on the predicted location, a predicted maximum throughput at the predicted location is determined. Based on the predicted maximum throughput, a second throughput is determined. The wireless device is communicated with using the second throughput.

Predictive throughput management

A first indicator of RF conditions that is associated with a first device is received. A second indicator of RF conditions that is associated with a second device is received. An indicator of throughput for one or more network elements is received. A first packet is received from the first device. A second packet is received from the second device. The first packet is sent and the second packet is not sent based on the first indicator of RF conditions, the second indicator of RF conditions, and the indicator of throughput.

Packet dropping based on RF conditions

A method of selecting a set of download data providers in a wireless network is disclosed. A request to download a data file from a wireless device is received. A set of potential providers that can provide one or more parts of the data file is determined. The set of potential providers is ranked based on a plurality of indicators that correspond to each of the set of potential provider. The plurality of indicators are each based on one or more wireless network operating conditions. The set of download data providers are selected based on the ranking of the set of potential providers. The data file is transferred to the wireless device by transferring one or more parts of the data file from each of the set of download data providers to the wireless device.

Selection of peer-to-peer providers in a wireless network

A method is provided for dynamically allocating capacity to uplinks and downlinks in a communication network. In the method, base stations of the communication network are apportioned into groups. Each of the base stations communicates over an uplink and a downlink with communication devices. For each of the groups, a first indication of utilization of the uplink for each of the base stations of the group is received. Also received is a second indication of utilization of the downlink for each of the base stations of the group. A capacity allocation between the uplinks and the downlinks of the base stations of the group is determined based upon the first and second indications. The capacity allocation is then employed for each of the base stations of the group.

Dynamic uplink/downlink capacity allocation in a communication network

A method and computer-readable medium for dynamic rate capping of data transmissions of a subscriber are provided. According to the method, configuration parameters for dynamic rate capping are defined. A plurality of subscriber parameters are obtained, and a plurality of network parameters are measured. A rate boost factor is calculated based on a backhaul rate boost factor and a sector rate boost factor. A transmission rate cap for subscriber data transmissions is calculated based on backhaul and sector parameters, such as backhaul and sector rate boost factors. The rate of subscriber data transmissions is dynamically controlled based on the transmission rate cap.

Method and computer-readable medium for dynamic rate capping

A method of operating a communication system is disclosed. A location associated with a first wireless device is received. For a first frequency band, a first stored signal quality indicator associated with the location is received. For a second frequency band, a second stored signal quality indicator associated with the location is received. Based on the first stored signal quality indicator and the second stored signal quality indicator, the first frequency band is selected.

Multi-carrier selection

A method of scheduling air-interface resources is disclosed. A throughput indicator associated with a wireless device is received. A modulation and coding scheme indicator is received. The modulation and coding scheme indicator being associated with a modulation and coding scheme recently used by the wireless device. Based on the modulation and coding scheme indicator, a token bucket size for a token bucket is selected. Based on the throughput indicator, a token rate for the token bucket is received. An air-interface resource is allocated to the wireless device based on the token bucket.

Setting token bucket parameters for scheduling of air-interface resources

A throughput of an air interface is recorded during a plurality of intervals to produce a set of recorded throughputs. A slot utilization is also recorded during each of the plurality of intervals to produce a set of recorded slot utilizations. A slot is an allocation of time and frequency. A linear regression on the data points of the set of recorded throughputs and the set of recorded slot utilizations is performed to produce a regression line of throughput versus slot utilization. An indicator of air interface quality is calculated based on the slope of the regression line.

What is claimed is a method of transferring overhead information in a wireless communication system, where the overhead information is encoded with a first modulation scheme, and where the overhead information is wirelessly transferred to a plurality of wireless communication devices in communication with the wireless communication system. The method includes receiving signal quality information from each of the plurality of wireless communication devices, processing the signal quality information to determine a second modulation scheme for the overhead information, where the second modulation scheme is determined to allow the overhead information to be decoded by each of the plurality of wireless communication devices, and the second modulation scheme is of a higher order of modulation than the first modulation scheme. The method also includes transferring an indicator of the second modulation scheme to the plurality of wireless communication devices, and transferring the overhead information to the plurality of wireless communication devices encoded with the second modulation scheme.

Adjustable modulation for overhead information in wireless communication networks

In an exemplary embodiment, a communication system is configured to engage in a plurality of ranging processes, and a pool of ranging codes is available to client devices for requesting the ranging processes. The pool is divided into groups of ranging codes, and each group includes ranging codes allocated for requesting a particular ranging process. The system comprises (a) a receiver that is configured to receive a plurality of requests from one or more client devices, wherein each request comprises a ranging code that is allocated for requesting a particular ranging process and (b) program code stored in data storage and executable by a processor to (i) use the ranging codes from the requests to determine a quantity of requests received, respectively, for each ranging process and (ii) based on the determined quantity of received requests for at least one ranging process, adjust the allocation of the ranging codes.

Dynamic allocation of WiMAX ranging codes

Disclosed herein is a method and system for power management in a subscriber station. The method involves (a) during a communication session between a subscriber station and an access network, determining a packet inter-arrival time for data received from the access network; (b) determining whether the packet inter-arrival time indicates that the communication session is in a high-activity state or, in the alternative, indicates that the communication session is in a low-activity state; (c) if the packet inter-arrival time indicates that the communication session is in the low-activity state, then selecting a first power-saving mode for use by the subscriber station; and (d) if the packet inter-arrival time indicates that the communication session is in the high.

Method and system for reactive power-saving

Disclosed herein is a method and system for WiMAX ranging using OVSF ranging codes. Specifically, in an exemplary embodiment, a WiMAX communication system that is configured to provide service at a plurality of quality of service (QoS) levels, may be configured to (a) broadcast a QoS level message in a downlink sub-frame, wherein the QoS level message comprises one or more spreading factor codes, and wherein each spreading factor code indicates a spreading factor for a particular QoS level, (b) receive a ranging request from a device, wherein the ranging request comprises an orthogonal variable spreading factor (OVSF) code, wherein the OVSF code was selected according to the one or more spreading factor codes, (c) determine a spreading factor of the OVSF code in the received ranging request, and (d) use the spreading factor as a basis for selecting a QoS level at which to provide service to the device.
