A system and method for restoring a database are described. The method may comprise requesting to begin receiving notifications of transactions that occur in the database. In response to the request, notifications of a plurality of transactions that occur in the database may be received, and information specifying the plurality of transactions may be stored. The method may further comprise receiving user input requesting to restore the database to a previous state. In response, the stored information may be retrieved, and a graphical user interface indicating the plurality of transactions specified by the stored information may be displayed. The method may further comprise receiving user input to the graphical user interface selecting a particular transaction of the plurality of transactions. In response, the database may be restored to a particular point in time relative to a time at which the particular transaction occurred.

Programmatically receiving and storing transaction information in support of a database recovery engine

A method for performing backup operations while avoiding data loss due to backup failure. A backup agent software receives a database server backup request and decomposes the backup request into a plurality of smaller backup requests. The plurality of smaller backup requests are then performed on the database to backup the specified database components to an archive. The backup agent software monitors success (or failure) of each of the plurality of backup requests and generates backup scripts for those backup requests that failed. These backup scripts may be subsequently executed to 're-run' the failed backups. The backup agent software is a modular program separate from the client application and the database server software.

Backup agent for dynamically decomposing a database backup request to constituent files to facilitate backup restartability

Methods, systems, and apparatus can utilize compositional sets associated with components of a database to link backups of the database taken over time. Such a linkage aids in the selection of backups for restore, assures that all backups used to restore the database are images from a common compositional structure, and aids in increasing the efficiency of restore operations.
