Alloys of nylon 4.6 having good thermal stability above their melting points and a broad range of desired properties are prepared by melt mixing nylon 4.6 with at least one other nylon and a nylon copolymer. The inclusion of a copolymer in the alloy provides unexpectedly large increases in ductility and toughness. Alloys can be formulated with a unique combination of properties including, for example, elongations of at least 100%, Gardner impact strengths of at least 30 joules, tensile strengths of at least 80 MPa, and heat deflection temperatures of at least 85.degree. C.

Nylon alloys

Block copolymers of nylon 4.6 are made by the solid phase polymerization of an alloy of nylons, including nylon 4.6, blended above the melting point of the nylons and then polymerized in particulate form under anhydrous conditions below the melting point of the nylons in the alloy. The block copolymers are characterized by their novel combination of properties which may include good melt strength, high melt viscosity, ductility (elongation), toughness (impact strength), good tensile strength and tensile modulus, high heat deflection temperatures, low crystallinity and high melting points.

Nylon 4.6 block copolymers

An impact modified nylon comprised of 50 to 95 weight percent nylon 6 and 5 to 50 weight percent polyester elastomer.

Impact modified nylon 6

Nylon 6 with increased wear life is comprised of a major weight amount of nylon 6 and minor weight amounts of a polyester elastomer, a polyolefin and a polyfluorocarbon.

Nylon 6 with improved wear life

Nylon 6 molding and extrusion grade resins are stabilized against UV degradation by the addition of small amounts of carbon black. The elongation and impact strength of the nylon are preserved, if not improved, by melt blending from 5% to 50% by weight of an elastomeric polyester with the nylon and carbon black.

UV Stabilized nylon 6

A plastic bearing and wear surface is disclosed which has low friction fibers protruding from its surface. The bearing is made by filling a plastic matrix with low friction fibers whose mechanical properties relate to those of the matrix in such a manner that when the matrix is machined, the matrix material will selectively be removed leaving some of the fibers imbedded in the matrix with their free ends protruding from and distributed over the machined surface.

Fiber lubricated bearings

Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene molding powders with improved melt characteristics are disclosed that can be processed with conventional melt forming equipment such as screw extruders and injection molding machines. The molding powders are comprised of from 70 to 95 weight percent ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene, from 5 to 30 weight percent of an intermediate molecular weight polyethylene and from 0.1 to 10 percent of a finely divided nucleating agent.

Melt processable UHMWPE

An X ray scattering device for implantation in the human body is disclosed which is comprised of finely divided barium titanate uniformly dispersed in a nontoxic plastic binder.
