Described herein are optical phased array receivers. In various embodiments, an optical phased array receiver includes a set of antennas, each antenna configured to receive an optical signal; a local oscillator configured to generate one or more optical carrier signals; one or more optical signal combiners coupled to the set of antennas and the local oscillator, the one or more optical signal combiners configured to combine (i) the optical signals received by the antennas and (ii) the optical carrier signal; and one or more photodetectors configured to extract information carried by one or more of the received optical signals into an electrical signal, wherein the extracted information is indicative of a phase and an amplitude of the one or more of the received optical signals.

Optical phased array receiver architectures

An optical device includes a row of optical units, each of the optical units comprising an antenna element and an associated phase shifting element, a first optical power splitter optically coupled to a first optical input/output element, and a first plurality of boundary adjustment elements. In the optical phased array, each of the first plurality of boundary adjustment units optically couples the first optical power splitter to different sub-rows of the row of optical units, and each of the plurality of boundary adjustment elements include a sub-row amplitude adjustment element and a sub-row phase adjustment element.

Monolithically integrated large-scale optical phased array

An optical device includes an array of unit optical elements. Each of the unit optical elements includes a plurality of amplitude adjustment (AA) elements, each of the plurality of AA elements configured for processing one of different phases of an optical signal; an optical antenna, and a combining mechanism for optically coupling the plurality of AA elements to the optical antenna. The optical device also includes a controller coupled to the plurality of AA elements, the controller configured for generating control signals for the plurality of AA elements according to a target optical beam pattern.

Two-dimensional optical phased array

A multi-port hybrid-based cancellation network may include a first and second hybrid coupler, and a first and second two-port network. The second hybrid coupler may be distinct from the first hybrid coupler. The first two-port network may include a first filter connected between the first and the second hybrid couplers. The second two-port network may include a second filter that is distinct from but essentially the same as the first filter connected between the first and the second hybrid couplers. Other circuitry components may be connected to one of the ports of multi-port hybrid-based cancellation network. These other circuitry components may have a configuration that increases or maximizes signal isolation between at least two of the ports of the multi-port hybrid-based cancellation network.

Hybrid-based cancellation in presence of antenna mismatch

A radio frequency (RF) multiplexer with isolation enhancement includes, for example, circuit networks that may be added to a set of RF filters to enhance the isolation among the ports. In one embodiment, the enhancement network may include RF filters and equalization networks. The RF multiplexer with isolation enhancement may be passive, tunable, or reconfigurable.

Enhancing isolation in radio frequency multiplexers

A cancellation-based filter may have at least one frequency pass band and at least one frequency stop band. The cancellation-based filter may include a first group of one or more band pass filters, each having at least one acoustic resonator, the first group providing at least one frequency pass band for the cancellation-based filter; at least one hybrid coupler; and a second group of one or more band pass filters, each having at least one acoustic resonator, the second group coupled to at least one of the at least one hybrid couplers, wherein the at least one hybrid coupler and the second group of one or more band pass filters interact to provide at least one frequency stop band for the cancellation-based filter.

Miniature acoustic resonator-based filters and duplexers with cancellation methodology

An all-acoustic filter includes acoustic directional couplers and acoustic filters. In one embodiment, the all-acoustic filter includes two acoustic directional couplers, pair of matched acoustic filters corresponding to either transmit or receive frequency bands, and another acoustic filter corresponding to the other of transmit or receive frequency bands. An all-acoustic duplexer may be realized monolithically in a small form factor, may be tunable, may support multiple transmit or receive frequency bands, or may include schemes for antenna mismatch correction.

All-acoustic duplexers using directional couplers

A two-port tunable or reconfigurable network having a filter transfer function may include: a network input port; a network output port; a hybrid coupler having a hybrid input port, a hybrid isolated port, a hybrid through port, and a hybrid coupled port; a first internal two-port network connected between the network input port and the hybrid input port; a second internal two-port network connected between the network output port and the hybrid isolated port; and a third internal two-port network connected between the hybrid through port and the hybrid coupled port. At least one of the first internal two-port network, the second internal two-port network, the third internal two-port network, and the hybrid coupler may be tunable or reconfigurable in response to an electrical signal or a user-operated control in a way that tunes or reconfigures the filter transfer function of the two-port tunable or reconfigurable network. A two-port tunable or reconfigurable network having a filter transfer function may include: a network input port; a network output port; a hybrid coupler having a hybrid input port, a hybrid isolated port, a hybrid through port, and a hybrid coupled port; a first load; a second load; a first internal two-port network connected between the between the first load and the hybrid through port; and a second internal two-port network connected between the between the second load and the hybrid coupled port. At least one of the first internal two-port network, the second internal two-port network, the hybrid coupler, the first load, and the second load may be tunable or reconfigurable in response to an electrical signal or a user-operated control in a way that tunes or reconfigures the filter transfer function of the two-port tunable or reconfigurable network.

Reflection and hybrid reflection filters

A radio frequency (RF) circuitry includes a device that taps a transmission line and picks up some of electromagnetic signals traveling in both directions. The RF circuitry includes a first detector, a second detector, a third detector, and a processor. The first detector measures a power of a first portion of the tapped electromagnetic signal travelling in one direction. The second detector measures a power of a first portion of the tapped electromagnetic signal travelling in the other direction. The third detector measures a power of a combined signal which includes a second portion of the tapped electromagnetic signal travelling in the one direction and a second portion of the tapped electromagnetic signal travelling in the other direction. The processor determines, based on outputs from the detectors, a relative magnitude and a relative phase of the electromagnetic signals.

Radio frequency complex reflection coefficient reader

Multi-port hybrid-based cancellation networks may be used to enable simultaneous transmit and receive in one or more co-existent communication systems. A multi-port hybrid-based cancellation network may include a first and second quadrature hybrid, a first and second two-port network, and other circuitry components. The second quadrature hybrid may be distinct from the first quadrature hybrid. The first two-port network may include a first filter or a first amplifier connected between the first and the second quadrature hybrids. The second two-port network may include a second filter or a second amplifier that is distinct from but essentially the same as the first filter or the first amplifier connected between the first and the second quadrature hybrids. The other circuitry components may be connected between or connected to a connection between one of the quadrature hybrids and one of the two-port networks. These other circuitry components may have a configuration that minimizes signal return loss at least one of the ports of the multi-port hybrid-based cancellation network. They may in addition or instead have a configuration that maximizes signal isolation between at least two of the ports of the multi-port hybrid-based cancellation network.

Enhancing isolation and impedance matching in hybrid-based cancellation networks and duplexers

A passive cancellation network may include a transmit input having a configuration that passively receives a transmit signal from a transmitter that is to be wirelessly transmitted; a transmit output having a configuration that passively delivers the transmit signal after processing by the passive cancellation network; a receive input having a configuration that passively receives a receive signal that includes undesirable leakage from the transmit signal; a receive output having a configuration that passively delivers the receive signal after processing by the passive cancellation network; and a passive feed forward cancellation circuit that passively cancels at least a portion of the undesired leakage from the transmit signal in the receive signal in a feed forward manner.

Passive leakage cancellation networks for duplexers and coexisting wireless communication systems

Systems, methods, and apparatus are described that provide for low phase-noise, spectrally-pure, and low-jitter signals from electrical oscillators. An aspect of the present disclosure includes utilization of an open-loop feed-forward phase-noise cancellation scheme to cancel phase noise, or jitter, of an electrical oscillator. Phase noise can be measured and then subtracted, with the phase noise measurement and subtraction being performed at a speed faster than phase noise variations of the oscillator. Another aspect of the present disclosure includes use of a feedback scheme for phase noise reduction. A feedback scheme can be used alone or in conjunction with a feed-forward scheme. Related phase-noise cancellation and/or reduction methods are described. Notch filter and RF amplifier circuits are also described.

Feed-back and feed-forward systems and methods to reduce oscillator phase-noise

A path sharing transceiver array architecture is disclosed. A plurality of channels are linked to antennas of an array for transmitting and receiving wireless signals that are offset in one of phase or time relative to one another. Each channel is associated with a delay element. In the receiving case, an offset signal is received at a first channel, processed, and shifted by a first delay element. The resulting signal is combined with the processed signal of a second, adjacent channel where a phase or time delayed signal is received. The combined signal is then shifted by a second delay element to produce a net signal. The first delay element is used to generate a shifted signal for both the first and second channel. The architecture can be extended to another number of channels.

Path-sharing transceiver architecture for antenna arrays

Variable phase ring oscillators are described that provide a linear phase progression between adjacent elements in an antenna array by providing a symmetric ring configuration of tuned amplifiers and a single phase shifter. The ring topology is coupled to a single PLL that allows for direct modulation and demodulation of arbitrary waveforms without using RF up/down converting mixers. The PLL distributes the transmit waveforms to all antenna elements in the transmit mode and combines the received waveforms in the receive mode without any complicated power distribution network. Ultra-wideband architectures and methods are described that utilize a first reference signal source, a VPRO, and a second reference signal source. Related methods are controlling an array and beam steering are also described.

Ultra-wideband variable-phase ring-oscillator arrays, architectures, and related methods

Embodiments of the present disclosure allow for a linear phase progression between adjacent elements in array by providing a symmetric ring configuration of tuned amplifiers and a single phase shifter. This ring topology is coupled to a single phase locked loop ('PLL') that allows for direct modulation and demodulation of arbitrary waveforms without using RF up/down converting mixers. In addition, the PLL distributes the transmit waveforms to all antenna elements in the transmit mode and combines the received waveforms in the receive mode without any complicated power distribution network.
