In the finishing of leather by spray application in an electrostatic field it is possible to use highly concentrated solutions if these solutions are sprayed into a solvent atmosphere in the presence of inert gases. The finishing process utilizes a solvent atmosphere which has a solvent content of 15-90% of the saturation concentration and a residual oxygen content of less than 10% by volume. The finishes contained are immediately stackable. By working with concentrated solutions it is possible to recycle the solvent from the waste air in an economically acceptable manner.

Process for finishing leather

Skins, hides and similar flexible objects are sammied during travel through two successive nips the first of which is defined by an upper pressure roll and a first lower pressure roll and the second of which is defined by the upper pressure roll and a second lower pressure roll. A first endless belt of felt or other absorbent material is trained over the upper pressure roll and a second endless belt of felt or other absorbent material is trained over the second lower pressure roll. A liquid-permeable object-supplying endless belt conveyor has an upper reach which advances through the two nips and has a portion which overlies the second endless belt downstream of the second nip.

A method for the wet processes in tanneries, e.g. soaking, liming, deliming, bating, pickling and tanning, wherein the liquids or solutions necessary for these processes are injected by high pressure into the hide or skin, and an apparatus for the realization of said method, wherein piston-type shooting devices are arranged in rows and a conveyor is provided receiving the hide or skin conveying it stepwise below the shooting devices and having holding-up members for pressing the hide against the shooting devices while the injection of said liquids or solutions takes place.
