The present specification discloses a pin slider disc brake comprising a torque-taking member and a caliper member, the members being slidable relative to one another by at least one pin connection. Each pin connection comprises an elongate, preferably cylindrical, pin guide which can be made of a corrosion-resistant material, the pin guide being detachably secured to, for example, the torque-taking member. The pin guide has a blind bore extending therethrough, in which a pin secured to the caliper member can freely slide, and the pin guide is so mounted to present an external surface which acts as a friction pad support surface. Thus, the pin guide can be relatively cheaply manufactured of corrosion-resistant material and simply replaced in the event of damage or wear.

Pin guide for sliding caliper disc brakes

The present invention is concerned with a sliding caliper disc brake having a torque member and a caliper incorporating at least one hydraulic actuator. The caliper is attached to the torque member for sliding movement relative thereto and is arranged to act on a pair of friction pad assemblies. Mutually abutting surfaces of the caliper and a friction pad assembly are such that one of the surfaces is roughened while the other of the surfaces is formed of a material which is relatively soft in relation to one of the surfaces. Thus, under braking, the roughened surface is caused to impress itself into the softer surface so as to restrain rotation of the friction pad assembly relative to the caliper.

Sliding caliper disc brake

The brake is of the type comprising a carrier member for fixing to a vehicle, a caliper member slidably mounted on the carrier member and an actuator for urging a first friction pad onto one side of a rotatable disc to cause the caliper member to slide relative to the carrier member and apply a second friction pad to the other side of the disc. The sliding connection is provided by a pair of pins slidable in openings in one of the members, preferably the carrier member, and releasably secured to the other of the members. To prevent binding of the pins in their openings, at least one of the openings is made diametrically oversized and the associated pin is urged into an eccentric position in direct sliding contact with the wall of its opening by means of a leaf spring which also resiliently urges the pads into position in the carrier member. When both pins extend into radially oversized openings, they are relieved of drag forces which arise on brake application.

Disc brake caliper and support structure

The present specification describes and claims a friction pad assembly for use in a sliding caliper disc brake and a sliding caliper disc brake incorporating such an assembly. The friction pad assembly comprises a backing plate, a pad of friction material secured to the backing plate, and a wire spring attached to the backing plate and extending outwardly in two directions from its point of attachment to the backing plate. When the assembly is incorporated in a sliding caliper disc brake which comprises a torque member and caliper member, the wire spring engages the caliper member both pressing the friction pad assembly down onto guides in the torque member and biasing the torque member and caliper member apart to take up any clearance. Thus the possibility of the assembly rattling in the brake and the torque member and caliper member rattling together, is reduced.

Friction pad assemblies for sliding caliper disc brakes

The present specification describes and claims a friction pad assembly for use in a sliding caliper disc brake and a sliding caliper disc brake incorporating such an assembly. The friction pad assembly comprises a backing plate, a pad of friction material secured to the backing plate, and a leaf spring, a central clip portion and two oppositely directed arms forming said leaf spring, the leaf spring being attached to the backing plate by means of said central clip portion. When the assembly is incorporated in a sliding caliper disc brake which comprises a torque member and a caliper member, the leaf spring engages the caliper member both pressing the friction pad assembly down onto guides in the torque member and biassing the torque member and caliper member apart to take up any clearance. Thus the possibility of the assembly rattling in the brake and the torque member and caliper member rattling together, is reduced.

A sliding caliper disc brake has a caliper member slidably mounted on a fixed torque-taking member and carrying an actuator which urges a friction pad onto one side of a rotating disc whereupon the caliper member slides on the torque member and applies an opposite pad to the other side of the disc. Both pads are carried by the torque member so that circumferential drag forces experienced by the pads when they are clamped against the rotating disc are transferred directly to the torque member. The sliding connection is provided by a pin secured to one of the members and slidable in a bore in the other of the members. Outward pivoting of the caliper about the axis of the pin is restrained by a pair of preferably flat complementary sliding surfaces which permit sliding in the brake-applying direction of caliper movement and also sliding in directions towards and away from the pin, when the torque member flexes under drag loading, so as to shear such corrosion as may accumulate on the complementary sliding surfaces.
