A method for monitoring a technical installation with a plurality of installation components connected to one another for transmitting data in order to perform process steps is provided. Status messages, each status message containing a plurality of individual messages, are displayed on a display unit. Upon initiation of the display of a status message, it is determined which individual messages assigned to the status message are to be displayed.

The invention relates to a process control system comprising a calculating unit enabling a charge value (W) to be determined from operations occurring in the process control system. Preferably, said process control system comprises a process control computer with a web server and a computer which is used to access the processes control computer via Internet. The charging value (W) is especially a service fee which is to be paid to an application service provider by a user of the process control system.

These functional units have a modular designed, each of the functional units including a configurable input area, a configurable functional area and a configurable output area. In addition, each of the functional units is connected to the management level, to the automation level and to another functional unit via data transfer media. The respective function of each of the functional units in the configurable functional area is provided as a function of the technical problems to be solved, and the configurable output area of each of the functional units is connected to the configurable input area of a further one of the functional units as a function of the technical problems to be solved.
