A roller machine includes a rotatably mounted roller body which can be placed on or against one counter roller. The roller has at least one axis and at least one spring element which is arranged between the roller body and a machine frame. The spring element is disposed between the roller body and the part of the axis which is used to secure the roller.

A protective device for a printing machine cylinder assures a risk-free flying changeover of printing plates. The protective device includes a rotatable ring that supports a sleeve-shaped cover. The sleeve-shaped cover can be positioned to partially envelop or cover the cylinder at a separation of the cylinder from another cylinder or a roller in the printing machine.

A paper guide for a web-fed rotary printing press with multiple color printing groups on several vertically spaced levels provides a path for the freshly printed multiple color web to air dry as it travels along the machine frame. The length of travel of the air drying path is a multiple of the spacing between adjacent plate cylinders in any of the levels in the printing machine.

A flush inking unit for a screened surface ink fountain roller utilizes an inking groove spaced from and located within a housing to supply ink to the ink fountain roller. Ink dividing plates of the ink groove are spaced from the surface of the ink fountain roller. Printing ink which is supplied to the inking groove and which passes out of the groove through the spaces between the ink dividing plates and the roller is collected in the housing and returned to an ink supply reservoir.

A measuring roller, which may be a driven chill roller provided with a coolant supply and return assembly, is utilized as a web tension measuring roller. A measuring cage includes a flanged ring fixed to a side frame of the printing machine and a retainer ring joined to a bearing for the measuring roller. These two rings are connected by a plurality of flectional beams that are provided with strain gauges. Changes in web tension are sensed by the strain gauges in response to deflection of the flectional beams.

An ink transfer volume measuring assembly utilizes a front, resilient surfaced roller and a rear, hard surfaced roller carried in a hand held, portable housing. The front roller is pried against the surface of a screened ink roller and receives ink therefrom. This ink is transferred from the soft front roller to the rear hard roller where it is scraped off by a doctor blade. The ink removed from the rear roller is deposited in a collecting container where its volume is measured by using a float that carries an indicating pointer. A revolution counter is driven by the front roller to provide a measurement of collection time.
