A door closer assembly and method of making the assembly, in which the closing force is exerted by at least one closing spring. The door closer assembly comprises a housing, a rotor journalled in said housing to deliver torque, and at least one piston apparatus, wherein said housing, said rotor, and said at least one piston apparatus are comprised of the same material of construction and exhibit at least substantially the same thermal expansion coefficient.

Door closer and method of producing a door closer

A door closing mechanism for a two-panel door having a leading panel and a trailing panel disposed adjacent to one another and being hingedly connected to a door frame. The door closing mechanism controls the closing sequence of a leading panel and a trailing panel, such that a trailing panel is locked in an open position prior to the closing of a leading panel. A locking mechanism, for locking and unlocking the trailing panel, includes a pivoting member which interacts, inter alia, with a sliding block and release member, for pivotally locking and unlocking a locking device. This locking mechanism pivots the pivoting lever into a locking position for preventing the closure of a trailing panel in advance of a leading panel upon a leading panel moving from a closed position to an open position. This locking mechanism can also pivot the pivoting lever into an unlocking position for permitting positioning of a trailing panel into a closed position upon a leading panel being in a closed position. This door closing mechanism can further be designed for concealment within the guide rail and leading and trailing panels.

A door closer being affixable to a door for closing the door. A channel having a slide therein for engaging with a detent also in the channel for holding the door open. The slide is connected to an arm of the door closer which arm moves the slide along the channel into contact with the detent which holds the door open once the detent and the slide have engaged with one another.

A door closer having a slide rail linkage and capable of being essentially fully concealed upon installation in either a door panel or door frame, has a housing in which is mounted a closer shaft. The closer shaft has a first end projecting from the housing to be attached to the slide rail linkage, a cam for providing the closing movement of the door, and a second end which is mounted in a journal bearing disposed within the housing.

A door check wherein a housing is affixed to the pivotable panel and a guide rail is affixed to the frame of a door. The housing contains a shaft which is rigidly connected with one end of an arm the other end of which is slidably guided by the rail. The shaft carries a disc cam having two asymmetric sections one of which is tracked by a spring-biased follower surrounding an antifriction bearing and tending to return the panel to its closed position and the other of which is tracked by a roller on the piston of a damper which yieldably opposes the movement of the panel back to its closed position. The configuration of the two cam sections is selected with a view to allow for a reduction of the resistance which the follower offers to opening of the door shortly after the panel leaves its closed position as well as to ensure that the damper can operate independently of the follower and vice versa. The damper has a spring which urges the roller against the cam and whose bias is not more than 50 percent of the bias of one or more springs which urge the follower against the cam.

A door check wherein a housing is affixed to the pivotable panel and a guide rail is affixed to the frame of a door. The housing contains a shaft which is rigidly connected with one end of an arm the other end of which is slidably guided by the rail. An automatic door closer has an elongated fluid-filled housing having a closed end and an opposite open end, a plug closing the open end of the housing, a first piston reciprocatably arranged in the housing and dividing the latter into a first pressure space adjacent the closed end and a second pressure space adjacent the plug, a closer shaft adapted to be connected to a door, extending transverse to the elongation of the housing and turnably mounted in the housing in the region of the closed end, elements connecting said closer shaft with said first piston for moving the latter during turning of the closer shaft in door-opening direction in a first direction reducing the volume of the first pressure space while increasing the volume of the second pressure space, the piston-moving elements comprising a piston rod slidingly guided in the first piston and having a free end facing the plug, a spring cooperating with the first piston for biasing the latter in a second direction opposite to the first direction, a first throttled passage communicating at one end with the first pressure space and at the other end with a cylinder space formed in the first piston, a second throttled passage communicating at opposite ends respectively with the first and said second pressure space, a valve in the second throttled passage mavable between a closed position preventing flow of fluid through the second passage and an open position permitting flow of fluid through the second passage; and a second piston which is stationary and formed as a projection of the plug movably received in the cylinder space of the first piston.

Automatic door closer

An automatic door closer comprises a closer shaft connected to a door for turning therewith and being turnably mounted in the region of one end of an elongated fluid-filled housing. A cam disk fixed to the closer shaft cooperates over rollers carried by a slide to move the latter and a piston rod fixed thereto during opening movement of the door in a first direction. A first piston arranged in the housing divides the latter into a first and a second pressure space and is connected to the piston rod passing through a bore in the first piston for moving therewith in the first direction to thereby reduce the volume of the first pressure space while increasing the volume of the second pressure space. A coiled compression spring arranged about the piston rod biases the first piston to move in a second direction opposite said first direction. A second piston fixed to the free end of the piston rod projects beyond the first piston into a cylinder space formed in a plug closing the other end of the housing. A first plurality of interconnected throttled passages formed in the housing and the plug communicate at opposite ends with the first pressure space and the cylinder space, and a second plurality of interconnected throttled passages communicate at opposite ends respectively with said first and said second pressure space. A valve is arranged in the second plurality of interconnected passages movable between an open position permitting flow of fluid through the second plurality of interconnected passages and a closed position preventing such flow, whereby when the first piston is moved during opening of the door against the pressure of the spring, it can be held in this position by moving the valve to the closed position preventing passage of fluid through the second plurality of passages while the door can be easily turned in either direction.

An automatic door closer in which a piston operatively connected to the door to be moved in axial direction during turning of the door in either direction from a closed to an open position divides the fluid filled housing of the door closer into two pressure compartments which are connected by two channels in which adjustable throttles are arranged to dampen the movement of the door or to be completely closed to prevent passage of fluid through the channels to hold the door in any open position.

An automatic door closer includes a closer shaft to which the door to be closed is connected for turning movement therewith about the axis thereof, and spring means biasing said closure shaft to a position in which the door is closed. The door closer includes further means for releasably holding the closer shaft and the door connected thereto in any adjusted position when the door is opened beyond a predetermined angle.
