The invention relates to a method for providing a metallic surface with a coating by applying one or more layers of one or more metal-containing slips to the surface. At least one of the slips comprises a coloring and/or color-imparting substance which has no influence on the properties of the completed coating and/or can be decomposed by thermal treatment, and the local thickness of the applied slip layer is determined on the basis of the local color intensity of the layer.

The present invention relates to a process for producing a diffusion layer for protecting temperature-stressed components, in particular of turbomachines, against oxidation and corrosion. The process comprises application of at least one slip to a component surface on which the diffusion layer is to be produced, and drying and/or hardening of the at least one slip by a heat treatment at a first temperature and diffusion heat treatment at a second temperature. The slip comprises Al-containing powder, Si-containing powder and a binder and also a Cr-containing powder which does not comprise any hexavalent chromium. A method for coating a turbine blade of a gas turbine is disclosed. The method includes applying a lacquer coat to a region of the turbine blade, where the lacquer coat includes chromium particles and/or chromium alloy particles, halides, and a binding agent. The method further includes drying the applied lacquer coat at a temperature between 50&#xb0; C. and 600&#xb0; C. with disintegration of the binding agent and subsequent reactive connection at a temperature between 900&#xb0; C. and 1160&#xb0; C.
