An unthreaded attachment of a joint eye to the piston rod of a vibration damper or spring strut, particularly by resistance welding. The piston rod and joint eye are held by one clamp electrode each, and the axial force created during welding is absorbed by a stop. A positive-locking connection is arranged between the piston rod and the clamp electrode to achieve axial fixing, so that joint eye can be attached in any installation state of the damper, even when the vibration damper is already installed.

Process for the filling of a piston-cylinder unit, for example a shock absorber, with compressed gas and for closing the gas chamber of the piston-cylinder unit with a sealing element in the form of a base. The piston-cylinder unit is placed in an apparatus which apparatus can be connected to a compressed gas source from which the gas chamber is filled. The base is inserted by the apparatus into the open end of the piston-cylinder unit, after which the piston-cylinder unit, now under pressure and closed off by the base, is closed by, the process of welding.

A casing tube of a vibration damper is provided with a connecting sleeve extending substantially radially from the radially outer circumferential surface of the casing tube. At the location where the connecting sleeve is fastened to the casing tube, the casing tube is provided with a planar face area.
