A shell fuse has a target acquisition sensor, such as an impact sensor, and a firing train in which a firing device carrier is movable from a safe position into an armed position. Overflight safety all the way to the target is afforded in a simple manner. There is provided a force element, in particular a pyrotechnic trigger device, which can be initiated by the response of the sensor. The force element is coupled to the firing device carrier such that the firing device carrier is movable into the armed position.

Shell fuse

A fuse device for a mortar shell includes an impact weight carrying a detonation charge and arranged to impact against a firing pin when the mortar shell strikes a target. A safety arm locks the impact weight against movement toward the firing pin in a safety position. The safety arm is movable out of locking relationship with the impact arm to establish an armed condition of the fuse device. Energy for moving the safety arm is stored in a spring. That energy is stored after the mortar shell has been launched, because an impeller is rotated by an air flow generated by the moving mortar shell, and that impeller rotation is transmitted to the spring to store energy.

Fuse device for a mortar shell

A fuse is capable of installation in a warhead only when a rotor of the fuse is in its safety position. If the rotor is in its live position, installation in the fuse is not possible. The fuse comprises an installation safety element which is movable between a normal first position blocking installation of the fuse and a second position permitting such installation. In its live position, the rotor blocks movement of the element to its second position. When in its second position, the element does not interfere with movement of the rotor to a live position.

Fuse

A switch is adapted for use in a projectile for actuating an electrical explosives-igniter in response to impact of the projectile. The switch includes a stationary electrical contact and a movable electrical contact. An actuator moves the movable contact against the stationary contact to complete an electric circuit in response to projectile impact. The actuator comprises a ball movable toward the movable contact. The ball is seated in a conical recess to enable the ball to move toward the movable contact even when the projectile does not impact along its longitudinal axis. The movable contact may comprise a cone-like array of flexible arms which engage the ball; movement of the ball flexes one or more of the arms into engagement with the stationary contact. Alternatively, the movable contact may comprise a linearly movable bolt engaged by the ball. A movable weight may be positioned behind the ball and adapted to engage the ball upon projectile impact to urge the ball toward the movable contact.

Impact switch for fuses

An explosive system for use in projectiles such as guided missiles and rocket projectiles, includes an explosive charge and an ignition booster for igniting the explosive charge. A detonator is provided for igniting the booster. An ignition transfer device is disposed between the detonator and the booster for being ignited by the detonator and igniting the booster. A portion of the ignition transfer device is embedded axially within an end face of the booster.

Explosive system for guided missiles and rocket projectiles

A projectile fuse comprises a rotor rotatable from a safety position to a live position. A slide is arranged to immobilize the rotor in its safety position. A piston is operably connected to the slide for displacing the slide to release the rotor for rotation. A conduit communicates one end of the piston with air pressure generated in response to firing of the projectile to shift the slide in a manner displacing the slide to release the rotor.

Safety device for a projectile fuse

A projectile fuse includes a carrier for an igniter. The carrier is held in a safety position by a safety element, which under the effect of centrifugal force moves to release the carrier. The safety element comprises a piston guided in a bore formed in the fuse body. The bore is filled with a flowable medium. The piston is provided with an orifice for enabling the medium to flow from one end of the piston to the other under the effect of the centrifugal force. The medium thus brakes the movement of the piston and creates a time delay before the carrier is released.
