A method for producing a porous element is presented. A powdery metal-ceramic composite material is produced. The composite material has a metal matrix and a ceramic portion amounting to less than 25 percent by volume. The metal matrix is at least partially oxidized to obtain a metal oxide. The metal-ceramic composite material is grinded and mixed with powdery ceramic supporting particles to obtain a metal-ceramic/ceramic mixture. The metal-ceramic/ceramic mixture is shaped into the porous element. The porous element can be used as an energy storage medium in a battery.

The layer structure includes a cathode layer, an anode layer and a solid electrolyte layer disposed between the cathode layer and the anode layer. Each of the layers are planar. A porous metal structure is used as the support for the layer structure and is also planar.

A process for the production of an insulating component from a ceramic material for a high temperature fuel cell includes the following steps: In a first step, a ceramic material is converted into a dispersion by wet preparation with a water-soluble binder. In a second step, the dispersion is poured to form a water-containing layer. In a third step, the water-containing layer is converted at elevated temperature to form a rubbery layer. In a fourth step, the binder is burnt off from the rubbery layer at elevated temperature. In a fifth step, the layer from which the binder has been burnt off is set at elevated temperature. In a sixth and a seventh step, the layer which has been set is processed in accordance with the dimensions of the insulating component and consolidated by sintering.

A high temperature fuel cell stack is composed of high temperature fuel cells having interconnecting conducting plates for leading off current produced in the high temperature fuel cell. At least one of the plates is formed of an alloy based on Fe with a Cr content of between 17 and 30% by weight and has an average coefficient of thermal expansion of between 13 and 14.times.10.sup.-6 /K in a temperature range from room temperature to 900.degree. C. Two electrodes are disposed between the plates and supplied with a working medium by the plates. One of the electrodes has a thickness of at least 100 .mu.m and the other a thickness of about 30 .mu.m. An electrolyte is disposed between the two electrodes, contains stabilized ZrO.sub.2 and has a thickness of between 5 and 30 .mu.m. The electrodes and the electrolyte have a coefficient of thermal expansion matched to that of the at least one plate. The material costs for the plates are reduced by a factor of 10 to 20 in comparison with prior art plates.

A process for sealing leaks gas spaces and/or gas channels between individual components of high-temperature fuel cells, includes introducing at least first and second and optionally further different gases at high temperature from the outside into the gas spaces and/or gas channels to be sealed off from one another, for flushing every leak with the first gas on one side and with the second or further gas on the other side. The first gas contains at least one gaseous compound that can be oxidized to form a metal ion-conducting and/or an oxygen ion-conducting oxide, and the second and optionally further gas contains oxygen and/or is able to give off oxygen. The first gas contains at least one oxidizable compound of at least one of the metals of an electrolyte material, a bipolar plate and electrodes of the fuel cells, and/or one element of the group including zirconium, nickel, calcium, magnesium, cerium and rare earth metal. A high-temperature fuel cell produced by the process includes individual components having previously leaking points therebetween. Inlays of metal ion-conducting and/or oxygen ion-conducting oxides are disposed in the vicinity of the previously leaking points. The inlays are formed of oxides of at least one of the metals of electrolyte material, a bipolar plate, electrodes, zirconium, nickel, calcium, magnesium, cerium, hafnium and rare earth metal.

A material for metal components, such as bipolar plates and window foils of high-temperature fuel cell systems, has ceramic solid electrolytes made of yttrium-stabilized zirconium oxide. The material includes a chromium alloy having from 3 to 10 atom % iron and from 0.5 to 5 atom % of rare earth metal and/or rare earth metal oxide, having a coefficient of thermal expansion at a temperature of 200.degree. C. amounting to from 8.5.times.10.sup.-6 to 10.5.times.10.sup.-6 per kelvin by which the temperature rises, and attaining a value at 900.degree. C. in a range from 14.times.10.sup.-6 to 15.times.10.sup.-6.
