The invention relates to a light source () comprising a light generating unit () like an organic light emitting diode and an outcoupling device () for coupling light out of the light generating unit in an outcoupling direction (). The outcoupling device comprises a first region () for facing the light generating unit, a second region () having a refractive index being smaller than the refractive index of the first region, and a structured intermediate region () between the first region and the second region. The first region is optically homogenous and has a thickness in the outcoupling direction being larger than a coherence length of the light, thereby reducing generally possible wavelength dependent interference effects and, thus, a corresponding degradation of the outcoupling efficiency. The outcoupling efficiency can therefore be increased.

Light source having an outsource device

An optoelectronic device comprising at least one optoelectronic active region comprising at least a rear electrode and a front electrode between which an organic optoelectronic material is sandwiched, said rear electrode being reflective, and a cover layer arranged in front of said front electrode. The cover layer comprises a material with light-scattering particles of a first material dispersed in a transparent matrix of at an least partly hydrolyzed silica sol. Due to the highly scattering propertied of the cover layer, the device is essentially concealed behind the cover layer when not in its operative state.

Hidden organic optoelectronic devices

A luminous body is described, in particular in the form of a planar lighting device for general lighting or for back-lighting of displays, which luminous body comprises a plurality of light sources (), for example LED elements, arranged in a housing (), in particular an optical waveguide plate (). The optical waveguide plate () forms a first optical medium () with a first optical scattering power, into which the light of the light sources () is coupled. Furthermore, at least one second optical medium () with a second optical scattering power is provided, such that the light propagating in the second optical medium () is at least substantially coupled in from the first optical medium (), and the scattering power of at least one of the media is chosen for the purpose of influencing the flow of light in the housing () such that a given brightness distribution of the light on the light emission surface () is achieved.

Luminous body

Disclosed is an optoelectronic device including at least one optoelectronic active region comprising at least a rear electrode and a front electrode between which an organic optoelectronic material is sandwiched, said rear electrode being reflective, and a cover layer arranged in front of said front electrode. The cover layer is formed from a material with light-scattering particles of a first material dispersed in a transparent matrix of at an least partly hydrolyzed silica sol. Due to the highly scattering properties of the cover layer, the device is essentially concealed behind the cover layer when not in its operative state.

Hidden organic optoelectronic devices with a light scattering layer

A luminous body is described, in particular in the form of a planar illumination device for general lighting or for backlighting of displays, wherein the luminous body comprises a plurality of light sources arranged in a housing () such as, for example, LED elements (). The luminous body is remarkable in that the light of the light sources is radiated at least substantially in a direction parallel to a light emission surface () of the housing (), while the inner walls of the housing () reflect the light at least partly. Not only does this render it possible to achieve a very homogeneous light distribution on the light emission surface () also in the case of a small constructional height of the luminous body, but the fact that no optical waveguide plate is required in the housing () also provides advantages in the form of a simple manufacture and low cost.

An LED includes a substrate layer with a first surface and a second surface opposing the first surface and having a refractive index of n. A light emitter is provided on the first surface and an array of particles is arranged on the second surface. The index matching layer between the particles on the second surface has a refractive index of nbeing n2&#x2267;n&#x2212;0.5 and n&#x2266;n+3. Further, the filling height of the index matching layer is lower than the maximum height of the array of particles.

LED with improved light emittance profile

The illumination system has a plurality of light sources (R, G, B), a light-transmissive light-sensing plate () and surface-modification structures () provided at a limited number of pre-determined locations on a surface of the light-sensing plate (). The surface-modification structures divert a portion of the light traveling through the light-sensing plate. The diverted light is guided towards an edge surface () of the light-sensing plate, where at least one light sensor () senses the diverted light. A first light sensor () preferably receives diverted light substantially exclusively from the first surface-modification structures (), whereas the second light sensor () receives diverted light substantially exclusively from the second surface-modification structures (). Alternatively, the illumination system further comprises a light-mixing chamber having a light-emission window for illuminating a display device, the light-sensing plate being arranged in the light-mixing chamber between the light source and the light-emission window.

A polarized light emitting waveguide plate comprises an entrance side for coupling light into the wave guide plate, a major exit surface for coupling light out of the waveguide plate, and a polarizer for selectively directing a component of a first polarization state of light coupled in via the entrance side towards the exit surface, the polarizer comprising an anisotropically light scattering layer which selectively scatters the component of the first polarization state towards the exit surface. Preferably, the waveguide plate is made of conventionally processed polymeric materials in the form of a laminate of waveguide substrate, anisotropically light scattering layer and, optionally, an optically transparent cover layer.

A lighting device for generating mixed colors comprises a light emission surface and a plurality of light sources of different colors, including an optical waveguide plate into which a plurality of cavities is provided. Each cavity accommodates a light source and has an upper side and side walls. The upper side faces the light emission surface and is coated with a first reflecting layer. The coupling of light into the optical waveguide plate takes place through the side walls.

Colored lighting device

A lighting device is described which comprises a light emission surface () and a plurality of substantially point-shaped light sources () such as, for example, LEDs, and which is suitable in particular for backlighting liquid crystal displays such as LCD picture screens, or for use as a planar light radiator. The lighting device is characterized in particular in that an optical waveguide plate () is provided with a plurality of cavities () for the light sources (), which cavities are covered with a first reflecting layer () on their upper sides () facing the light emission surface (), while the coupling of the light into the optical waveguide plate takes place through side walls () of the cavities. A very homogeneous distribution of the luminous intensity on the light emission surface is achieved thereby.

Lighting device with point-shaped light sources

A lighting device is described with an optical waveguide plate that has a light emission surface and a plurality of channels each with at least one substantially linear light source. The device is suitable in particular for use as a backlight in a liquid crystal display, such as an LCD picture screen, or for use as a planar light source. The channels are provided with a reflecting first layer at their upper sides facing the light emission surface. The coupling of light into the optical waveguide plate takes place through side walls of the channels.

Lighting device with linear light sources

A back lighting system for illuminating a display device comprises a light-emitting panel () and a light source () for coupling light into the light-emitting panel. The light source comprises a low-pressure discharge lamp (). The light source additionally comprises a plurality of LEDs (', . . . ) for selectively setting the color temperature of the light emitted by the light source. Preferably, the LEDs increase the color temperature of the light emitted by the light source. Preferably, the light emitted by the back lighting system ranges from 6,000 to 10,500 K. Preferably, the LEDs are blue light emitting LEDs, each preferably having a luminous flux of at least 5 lm. The color point of an image to be displayed on a display screen of the display device is set by the back lighting system, thus enabling an optimum contrast to be achieved for the image to be displayed by the display device.

Illumination system and display device

A lighting device is described with an optical waveguide plate that has a light emission surface and a plurality of channels each with at least one substantially linear light source. The device is suitable in particular for use as a backlight a liquid crystal display, such as an LCD picture screen, or for use as a planar light source. The channels are provided with a reflecting first layer at their upper sides facing the light emission surface. The coupling of light into the optical waveguide plate takes place through side walls of the channels.

The invention describes a display screen ( ) with a backlight, comprising at least a light source ( ) and an optical guide plate ( ). The homogeneity of the light distribution is achieved by scattering the light rays on reflective indentations ( ) in the side faces ( ) of the optical guide plate ( ) and/or by recesses ( ) having vertical walls perpendicular to the front face ( ) and/or the back face ( ) of the optical guide plate ( ). The recesses ( ) with vertical walls also improve the coupling-out of the light to the backlight of the display screen ( ).
