Method of making a copper alloy to be used as a mold for continuous casting and comprising from 0.05% to 0.4% zinc; from 0.02% to 0.3% magnesium; from 0.02% to 0.2% phosphorus; all percentages by weight; the remainder being copper, and inevitable impurities; the alloy is cast and hot worked possibly followed by quenching and cold working with at least 10% deformation; the alloy is then annealed from 1 to 6 hours at a temperature from 300.degree. to 550.degree. centigrade; and finally cold worked with at least 10% deformation.

Copper alloy and method

Continuous casting is improved by providing a continuous casting mold of copper alloy, said copper alloy including from 1.6 to 2.4% nickel, from 0.5 to 0.8% silicon, from 0.01 to 0.2% zirconium possibly including up to 0.4% chromium and/or up to 0.2% iron, the remainder copper as well as inevitable manufacturing impurities and usual working additives preferably the zirconium amount is smaller than the upper stated limit and the alloy includes in addition up to 0.1% of at least one of the following cerium, hafnium, niobium, titanium and vanadium.

Continuous casting mold

Continuous casting uses a mold made of copper allow which includes from 0.01% to 0.15% boron, 0.01 to 0.2% magnesium, the remainder being copper as well as manufacture-dependent inpurities and working additives; in addition, at least one additive from the group is used at stated percentages: from 0 to 0.05% silicon, from 0 to 0.5% Ni, from 0 to 0.03% iron, from 0 to 0.03% titanium, from 0 to 0.2% zirconium, from 0 to 0.04% phosphorus, at a total content not exceeding 0.6%, all percentages by weight; the silicon content should be from 0.02% to 0.04%, and the nickel content should be from 0.1 to 0.5%. The mold is made in several working and annealing steps, the last step should be a cold working step with at least 10% deformation.

Method of casting and mold making

A mold for continuous casting has indents, grooves, or recesses in the mold wall itself and/or along one or more edges thereof; wear-proof inserts are fitted into these grooves or indents and fastened thereto by means of electron beam welding along exposed joint lines between the inserts as inserted and border edges of the indents or recesses. The inserts are affixed in this manner along edges for engagement with other mold walls, and/or along the lower edge and/or a level which is expected to coincide with the surface level of the molten steel in the mold.

Mold for continuous casting and method of making

A metal mold employed for the casting of metals, preferably steel, has a wear resistant layer on the casting surface thereof formed of a different metal having solid particles dispersed therein. A preferred mold is formed of copper or alloy thereof having an electrolytically deposited nickel layer with silicon carbide particles dispersed therein.
