A system is providing for simultaneously addressing the problems of deadhead pumping, dry pumping, and seal failure in progressive cavity pumps. The system uses a hydraulic channel (23, 25, 26) which runs from the pump's rotor (5) to the pump's hydraulic motor (21) and includes the spaces defined by the seals (17) for the joints (8A, 8B) in the drive line for the rotor (5). At the rotor (5), the system includes a plug (19) which melts at a predetermined temperature. The hydraulic channel (23, 25, 26) is filled with lubricating oil and is pressurized. A drop in pressure either as a result of the melting of the plug (19) or a break in the integrity of the seals (17) is detected and used to stop the operation of the pump's motor (21). The system is resistant to disablement by operators.

Methods and apparatus for monitoring progressive cavity pumps

An improved plastic film cartridge for flowable explosives is provided. The cartridge comprises a recessed or indented end configuration which recess can be enlarged to provide a locating and retaining pocket for a blasting cap without any penetration of the cartridge film wall. The recess is maintained by means of an internal, elastic cord or strip attached between the sealed ends of the cartridge.

A method of charging upwardly extending, large diameter boreholes with cylindrical explosive cartridges is provided employing a longitudinally inflating flexible tube as the pushing mechanism. A fluid-impervious flexible tube is turned over or everted at one end and secured. A fluid, preferably air, at about 3 psi is passed into the tube causing the tube to elongate and the everted tube face to travel along the length of a borehole. An explosive cartridge mounted against the tube face is carried to a desired location in the borehole after which the tube is partly deflated and withdrawn from the borehole.

Charging large diameter vertical boreholes

An explosive or stemming package is provided which is self-retaining in vertical or inclined up-holes in stable rock. The package containing a flowable material, for example, slurry explosives, consists of a thin-walled cylindrical bag having at least one longitudinal, external pleat held closed by means of an adhered overcovering or tape. With the package held in position in the up-hole by a push rod, the tape is severed by means of a rip cord allowing the pleat to open. The slumping contents press the package closely against the borehole wall for secure retention without additional support. Improved coupling of the explosive charge to the rock is also provided giving enhanced blasting efficiency.

Expandable explosive and stemming cartridge

A thermoplastic film package containing a blasting explosive is provided having utility in secondary blasting operations. The package comprises superimposed film panels joined along their periphery to form a bag and having closeable neck-like openings at opposite ends of the bag. The package lends itself to fabrication from flat film or sheet by heat-sealing techniques and may be filled with explosives on continuous packaging apparatus.

Explosive container of interconnected thermoplastic film packages

A method and apparatus is provided for cartridging viscous explosives mixtures, such as emulsion explosives, in convolutely wound paper tubes. The method comprises winding a section of paper film on a rotating hollow mandrel, closing one end of the wound paper tube, injecting the explosives mixture through the hollow mandrel into the paper tube upon the mandrel, removing the filled tube from the mandrel and closing the tube open end. The method replaces higher cost plastic chub packages with low cost paper and allows the efficient and economic production of sensitive small-diameter cartridges wherein the occluded air or gas is not dissipated during cartridging.

Film cartridge manufacture and filling method and apparatus

An improved gland seal is provided for an extrusion, chub container packaging apparatus. The seal comprises a rigid ring sealing element adapted to swivel upon a ball-like holder attached to the end of the filling horn. The sealing element may be simply positioned to compensate for variations in casing diameters and is not subject to expansion caused by pressure pulses during packaging. Package breakage and malformation is reduced and a uniform product is provided.

Gland seal for stuffer horn

An apparatus is described for handling a continuous, stuffed, flexible casing and especially stuffed with explosives material. The apparatus includes pairs of split necking plates on either side of a casing path adapted for opposed reciprocal movement for engaging the casing in the path and necking the casing. The necking plates are mounted by a parallelogram linkage suspended from an overhead frame, and linkage means are provided for simultaneously moving the necking plates through said parallelogram linkage to neck the casing. Each pair of necking plates is adapted to move apart in a direction parallel to the axis of the path of the casing such that when the casing is necked by the necking plates, the neck so formed on the casing can be elongated by moving the plates apart. Magazine means are provided for advancing clips overhead of the casing, and a reciprocating plunger removes the clips from the magazine and arranges them on the neck portion of the casing between the necking plates as they are split apart. Die means are pivoted from the overhead frame and adapted for movement to and from a position between the split-apart necking plates below and adjacent the necked portion of the casing for receiving and forming the clips. Cutting means are pivotally mounted to the overhead frame for movement between the split-apart necking plates to cut the casing in the vicinity of the clips.
