Variable-format web-fed offset printing machine having printing-unit cylinders comprising core cylinders to which compressed air can be applied and onto which intermediate sleeves can be pushed axially and shrunk on radially. Each intermediate sleeve includes a carrier layer whose inner face rests on the core cylinder, a compressible intermediate layer, a transition layer, and a variable-thickness bridging layer, which ends with a covering layer to which a further surface like a printing plate or a rubber blanket can be fitted.

The image subject to be transferred is applied in preformatted form to at least two printing formes in the form of segment-like image data in a row and column arrangement, in such a way that a first portion of information from each segment of the image subject (information (a) with appropriate index features) is provided on a first printing forme, and a second portion of information from the corresponding segment of the image subject (information (b) with appropriate index features) is provided on a second printing forme. As a result of synchronous rolling of the printing-forme cylinders, the portions of information are assembled to form complete information (<a,b> with the respectively combined index features) for each segment of the image subject on the printed page. For each printing-forme cylinder revolution, the index features for each segment of the image subject (information <a,b>) are recombined step by step in the manner of a permutation, so that each printed segment constitutes a unique print.

A printing unit is provided for a web-fed rotary printing machine, having a plurality of cylinders with associated drive motor, an additional device for printing an at least two guide elements. At least one cylinder is a plate cylinder. At least one guide element corresponds to the plate cylinder and is operably arranged in the printing unit for determining a setting path of the corresponding plate cylinder relative to the other cylinders. This guide element extends as far as the additional device for printing.

A printing unit for a web fed rotary printing machine is provided including a machine frame support, two sets of printing unit cylinders, carriages, drive motors and guide elements. The two sets of printing unit cylinders, include a plurality of outer printing unit cylinders and a plurality of inner printing unit cylinders. Each carriage corresponds to one printing unit cylinder for rotatably mounting its corresponding printing unit cylinder on the machine frame support. There is a drive motor for each carriage. Two sets of guide elements are arranged on the machine frame for determining a travel setting of the plurality of carriages along the machine frame support. The guide elements for the outer cylinders are arranged on the frame support in an orientation different than the guide elements for the inner cylinders so that movement of the outer printing unit cylinders is in a different direction than movement of the inner printing unit cylinders. Optionally, the printing unit accommodates additional printing devices that are moveable in relation to their corresponding cylinders and vice versa.

A printing unit for a web-fed rotary printing machine is provided having at least one carrying wall, a plurality of cylinders mounted on the carrying wall, a drive motor corresponding to each cylinder and a slide corresponding to each cylinder. Each slide carries its corresponding cylinder and receives the corresponding drive motor. A drive means is provided for driving the slides and a plurality of guide elements are mounted on the carrying wall and arranged laterally next to the adjacent end faces of the cylinders for guiding the slides along the wall. The guide elements are arranged opposite and parallel to one another on the carrying wall. Optionally, the carrying wall includes panels defining an orifice to allow cylinders, journals and sleeves of the printing machine of varying sizes to be changed readily.

For this purpose, an electromagnetic system, with which an axial force can be applied to the cylinder, is arranged on the frame of the rotary printing machine. A rotary printing machine in which cylinders are uncovered by a swinging door or a removable flap. Journals are separated from the cylinder bodies and remain, together with bearings arranged in the door or the flap. At a separation point the journals have truncated conical projections which are inserted into corresponding truncated conical depressions in the end face of the cylinder body.
