Methods and systems for converting a renewable fuel intermediate composition to finished transportation fuel are provided herein. In some examples, a renewable fuel intermediate composition is flowed over a first catalyst in a first reaction zone to generate a saturated, hydrodeoxygenated product. A liquid portion of the renewable fuel intermediate composition may be characterized as having more than about 70 wt % of the oxygen being within ketone groups. The saturated, hydrodeoxygenated product may be flowed over a second fixed-bed catalyst in a second reaction zone to generate a product including the finished transportation fuel.

Converting a renewable fuel intermediate composition to finished transportation fuel

A catalyst system has been designed that disrupts the sedimentation process. The catalyst system achieves this by saturating key feed components before the feed components are stripped into their incompatible aromatic cores. The efficacy of this disruptive catalyst system is particularly evident in a hydrocracker configuration that runs in two-stage-recycle operation. The catalyst is a self-supported multi-metallic catalyst prepared from a precursor in the hydroxide form, and the catalyst must be toward the top level of the second stage of the two-stage system.

Catalytic remedy for advanced UCO bleed reduction in recycle hydrocracking operations

A process is provided for producing a heavy lubricating base oil by hydrocracking a lubricating oil feedstock at high yield. The lubricating oil feedstock contains a hydroprocessed stream that is difficult to process using a conventional catalyst system. The catalyst used in the process includes a mixed metal sulfide catalyst that comprises at least one Group VIB metal and at least one Group VIII metal. The process also provides for hydroisomerization and hydrofinishing process steps to prepare the lubricating base oil.

The invention relates to a self-supported mixed metal sulfide (MMS) catalyst for hydrotreating hydrocarbon feedstock and to a method for preparing the catalyst. The MMS catalyst is characterized as having a BET surface area of at least 20 m/g and a pore volume of at least 0.05 cm/g. In one embodiment, the MMS catalyst is also characterized as having a multi-phased structure comprising five phases: a molybdenum sulfide phase, a tungsten sulfide phase, a molybdenum tungsten sulfide phase, an active nickel phase, and a nickel sulfide phase.

A catalyst precursor composition and methods for making such a catalyst precursor are disclosed. The catalyst precursor comprises at least a promoter metal selected from Group VIII, Group IIB, Group IIA, Group IVA and combinations thereof having an oxidation state of +2 or +4, at least one Group VIB metal having an oxidation state of +6, and at least one organic oxygen-containing ligand. Catalysts prepared from the sulfidation of such catalyst precursors are used in the hydroprocessing of hydrocarbon feeds.
