A seal is inserted into a space to be sealed. First and second end portions of the seal are engaged with first and second end surfaces of the space. The seal is compressed between the first and second end surfaces. The compression strains the seal. The strain includes the rotation of a cross-section of the seal so as to bias the seal into engagement with a surface forming one of an inboard surface and an outboard surface of the space.

Seal

A single-ply sheet metal seal ring with a convoluted, V/E-shaped cross-section having planar-circumferential flexibility is shown to be more capable of conforming to the sealing face contours of warped, weld-deformed flanges than thin layer, multiple-ply seals developed to replace earlier E-shaped seals for this purpose. The basis of the improved flexibility of the new seal lies mainly in the discovery of geometric relationships that permit a reduction in the thickness of the sheet material employed in the construction of the seal while maintaining its pressure containing capabilities.

Metal seals for weld-deformed high temperature pneumatic ducting joints

An annular, axial seal has a central section having a first linear section that has first and second ends. The seal has a curved, first portion that is contiguous with the first end of the first linear section and extends to a first end. The seal includes a second portion that is contiguous with the second end of the first linear section. The second portion includes an arcuate portion and a second linear section contiguous with the arcuate portion wherein the arcuate portion is between the first linear section and the second linear section. The second linear section is located across from the first linear section. A curved end portion is contiguous with the second linear section wherein the second linear section is between the arcuate portion and the curved end portion. The curved end portion extends to a second end that is located across from the first linear section.

Resilient seal

A liquid and gas tight bi-directional metal frustro-conical seal is energized by compression between planar, annular faces causing its inner and outer diameters to sealingly engage opposing cylindrical surfaces of inner and outer metal pipes. The contact forces between the concentric sealing surfaces are high in order to locally deform the softer metal and eliminate leakage paths. The sealing ring is backed-up by a similar ring that is reduced in cross-sectional width, such that when compressed the ring does not engage the inner and outer cylindrical surfaces. The second ring is nested with and directly below the sealing ring, and equally axially compressed when the joint is assembled. When the pipe joints are disassembled, the second ring serves to restore the seal ring to its original, deeper frustro-conical shape, allowing the pipe joints to be easily separated for reuse of the piping in a different location.

Bi-directional wellhead seal

A seal for containment of fluids or gases during high temperature applications, separating a high pressure area on one side from a low pressure area on an opposite side, and formed to convert axial displacements into radial movements eliminating axial strains, having at least one engaging, conical ring structure with a tapering arcuate side facing radially away from the high pressure side. The conical ring structure has a side opposite the tapering side that is cylindrical, and a cylindrical diameter that is concentric with the arcuate side. The conical ring structure has an axial distal end with a larger diameter than its opposite end for engaging a flat annular surface on an adjacent structural member to form the seal. A heat-destructible wax spacer may be used for insertion within the clearance gap to locate the seal concentrically with the gland for ease of assembly.

To seal an inboard member to an outboard member, a metallic annular seal is inserted into the outboard member to align with an inwardly-open channel in the outboard member. The seal is outwardly expanded at least partially into the channel by a combination of elastic and plastic deformation. The seal is released to allow inward elastic partial recovery. The inboard member is inserted into the seal with interference so as to further outwardly expand the seal and provide sealing engagement between the inboard and outboard members.

Seals and sealing methods

An annular, axial seal having a linear section having opposite ends, a first side in a first plane and an opposite second side in a second plane wherein the second plane is parallel to the first plane and a curled section contiguous with one of the ends of the linear section. The curled section curls in a first direction to a distal end. The curled section curls in the first direction in accordance with a predetermined radius and predetermined distance such that the distal end of the curled section is located directly across from the first side of the linear section. The linear section and the curled section provide a generally 'J' shaped cross-section. The annular, axial seal also has a tip portion contiguous with the opposite end of the linear section such that the linear section is between the tip portion and the curled section. The tip portion is slightly curved with respect to the linear section such that the tip portion breaks the first plane. The tip portion has an end that does not directly face the distal end of the curled section.

Metallic seal

The present invention is directed to a resilient, annular, metallic seal member having a generally 'j' shaped cross-section. The annular, metallic seal member includes a first end portion having a first distal end, a generally curled second end portion that extends to a second distal end, and a central body portion between and contiguous with the first and second end portions. The annular, metallic seal member has a first side and an opposite second side. The second end portion curls in a first direction in accordance with a predetermined radius such that the second distal end is located across from the first side of the annular, metallic seal member and the first and second distal ends do not face each other.

A seal of single or multiple plies and/or single or multiple convolution regions features inflection regions to arrest or reduce bending stress in the seal's acute bend regions and/or ply deformations on non-pressure-facing plies. Additionally, there is disclosed the combined use of multiple-ply seals incorporating the inflection regions in each ply and deformations on non-pressure-facing plies.

Resilient seals with inflection regions and/or PLY deformation

A seal features a first curved region generally concave in a direction of concavity, and a second curved region generally concave in the direction of the concavity of the first curved region. The second curved region is oriented within the direction of concavity of the first curved region. A first bend connects the first curved region to the second curved region, and a second bend connects the first curved region to the second curved region.

Multiple-ply resilient seal

A seal features a first ply and a second ply, each ply having at least one convolution. Leg termination regions connect the plies, such that a substantially enclosed volume is created between said first and second surfaces. Additional plies may be disposed between the first and second plies, the material of the additional plies having substantially the same convoluted shape of the first and second surfaces and being disposed within the envelope created between the first and second surfaces. The seal of the present invention may be formed of tube or strip stock. A seal formed of strip stock may have its edges, running about the circumference of the seal, either abutting, overlapping, or welded to each other.

A resilient seal has an annular curved region having a generally C-shaped cross section, and a pair of annular leg regions. Each leg region has a free end and extends generally radially inward towards the inside of the C-shaped cross section. The leg regions contact each other and each form a generally frustro-conical disk spring member extending inwardly from the curved region. The leg regions are adapted to contact each other and to provide a restoring force when the sealing ring is compressed. A first bend connects one of said leg regions to the curved region, and a second bend connects the other of the leg regions to the curved region.
