An electronic device may include an electronic display including display pixels to display an image based on compensated image data. As image data is written to a pixel in the row of pixels, capacitive coupling at a driver may lead to distortion on the driver. In particular, the capacitive coupling may cause distortion at a storage capacitor, which may lead to current droop at the pixel. The current droop may be reduced or eliminated in each pixel by performing pixel compensation. The pattern of the pixel compensation may be selected such that, over a number of subframes, an average amount of light is the same or similar to what would be emitted had pixel compensation been performed on each pixel in each subframe.

In-pixel compensation for current droop and in-pixel compensation timing

The present disclosure is directed to estimating and modulating peak luminance of the display substantially in real-time to allow very bright pixels to be shown on the electronic display as long as the total electrical energy drawn by the electronic display does not exceed a threshold. The amount of electrical energy that is being drawn by the electronic display may be estimated from the image data by counting the number of rows of pixels that are emitting pulses in discrete bins of time. Because the pulses draw a predictable amount of electrical energy per row per time bin, the amount of electrical energy drawn by the electronic display may be estimated substantially in real time. The image data on the electronic display may therefore be modulated to avoid drawing too much electrical energy from the power source of the electronic device while permitting a high dynamic range.

Real-time peak luminance control for pulsed electronic display

A display system may include a plurality of light emitting diodes to emit light, where each of the light emitting diodes are connected in parallel and a plurality of first switches respectively coupled to the plurality of light emitting diodes. A first switch of the plurality of first switches is coupled in parallel to a first light emitting diode. The first switch may short the first light emitting diode of the plurality of light emitting diodes through a defined resistor having a defined value that therefore draws a defined short circuit current.

Systems and methods for mitigating micro-LED failures

Electronic devices, displays, and methods are provided for performing row shuffling to reduce an appearance of image artifacts during eye movements such as saccades. An electronic display may include a number of rows of display pixels and driving circuitry to drive the rows of pixels. The driving circuitry may spatially shuffle or temporally shuffle, or both spatially and temporally shuffle, a row order of driving the rows of display pixels.

Emission row shuffling for pulsed electronic displays

A control circuit adjusts a value of a source supply voltage VSSEL provided to a display area in an electronic display. The control circuit also adjusts a voltage Vreset applied to the display area to cause the display area to emit light more uniformly under various ambient conditions (e.g., temperature) surrounding the display area. Dynamically changing Vreset is employed to make anode charging dynamics independent of temperature. The control circuit adjusts the source supply voltage VSSEL and the voltage Vreset together to compensate display pixel hysteresis effects and display artifacts caused by temperature changes and brightness changes of the display area and collectively produce images. Dynamically tuning the Vreset and the VSSEL voltages also saves power and improves gray level accuracy for the electronic display.

Electronic devices, displays, and methods are provided for operating an electronic display in coexistence with sensors that could be adversely impacted by the operation of the electronic display. An electronic device may include an electronic display and a sensor. The electronic display may display image content by light emission during an emission period and periodically enter a quiet period in which the light emission of the electronic display is turned off. The sensor may perform sensing operations during the quiet period without interference from the operation of the electronic display.

Electronic display timing to mitigate image artifacts or manage sensor coexistence

A pulse width modulation and amplitude modulation driving system for a display panel, including related circuits and methods of operation, are described. In an embodiment, a display panel includes a thin film transistor layer comprising a plurality of subpixel circuits. Each subpixel circuit may include a drive transistor, a comparator, and a switch. A plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs), such as micro-LEDs, may be connected to the plurality of subpixel circuits. Each subpixel circuit can control an LED based on a current amplitude controlled by the drive transistor and a current pulse width controlled by the comparator and the switch. Other aspects are also described and claimed.

Pulse width modulation and amplitude modulation driving system for display panels

An electronic device display may have pixels formed from crystalline semiconductor light-emitting diode dies, organic light-emitting diodes, or other pixel structures. The pixels may be formed on a display panel substrate. A display panel may extend continuously across the display or multiple display panels may be tiled in two dimensions to cover a larger display area. Interconnect substrates may have outwardly facing contacts that are electrically shorted to corresponding inwardly facing contacts such as inwardly facing metal pillars associated with the display panels. The interconnect substrates may be supported by glass layers. Integrated circuits may be embedded in the display panels and/or in the interconnect substrates. A display may have an active area with pixels that includes non-spline pixels in a non-spline display portion located above a straight edge of the display and spline pixel in a spline display portion located above a curved edge of the display.

Electronic devices with borderless displays

Display panel redundancy schemes and methods of operation are described. In an embodiment, and display panel includes an array of drivers (e.g. microdrivers), each of which including multiple portions to independently receive control and pixel bits. In an embodiment, each driver portion is to control a group of redundant emission elements.

An electronic device uses a leader synchronize signal generator to synchronize clock signal generators used by multiple components in the electronic device to a common time-base. A processor core complex of the electronic device sends per-frame configuration to a timing controller for frames to be displayed on an electronic display before a corresponding frame begins.

To reduce image artifacts and non-uniformity associated with a display pixel of an electronic display, processing circuity may adjust a luminance value corresponding to a display pixel according to a per-pixel gain mask, a per-pixel anode mask, or both. To further correct for the non-uniformity, the processing circuitry may convert the luminance value to a digital code based on a curve associated with an anode on which the display pixel is located.

Display pixel non-uniformity compensation

To reduce image artifacts induced by temperature variations associated with display pixels of an electronic display, processing circuitry may process temperature sensing data to obtain an average temperature and a temperature distribution of the electronic display. Based on the processed temperature data, the processing circuit may adjust a reference voltage applied to the display pixels to compensate for the average temperate. To further correct for the image artifacts, the processing circuitry may transform image data to luminance domain. Based on the processed temperature data, the processing may adjust luminance vales of the image data to compensate for the temperature distribution.

Two-dimensional temperature sensing and compensation

In accordance with embodiments of the present disclosure, a device may include a pulsed emission electronic display having multiple display pixels in order to display an image frame. The display may pulse one or more display pixels of over a plurality of sub-frames within the image frame based on display image data. The device may also include image processing circuitry to generate the display image data based on source image data indicative of an image to be displayed during the image frame. Additionally, the image processing circuitry may dither an order of the plurality of sub-frames.
