An electronic device may have a housing, an expandable display mounted to the housing, and a frame for supporting the expandable display. The housing, display, and frame may be operable in expanded and retracted states. In the retracted state, an exposed portion of the display is viewable on the outside of the device, while a retractable portion of the display is enclosed within the housing and hidden behind the exposed portion of the display. As the device transitions from the retracted state to the expanded state, the retractable portion of the display may roll around an axis onto the front of the device to increase the size of the viewable display area. The frame may have a rigid portion that is mostly solid metal supporting the exposed portion of the display and a flexible portion formed from parallel strips of metal supporting the retractable portion of the display.

Electronic devices with expandable displays

The present disclosure relates to systems and methods to control brightness and color output in foldable displays. A foldable electronic display may, when folded, includes a first part in a first plane and a second part in a second plane different from the first plane. A brightness or color setting of the first part may be controlled independently of a brightness or color setting of the second part.

Systems and methods for brightness or color control in electronic displays

A coated optical component includes an optical component and a conformal coating. The optical component is crystalline calcium fluoride and the conformal coating is an atomic layer deposition (ALD) coating in contact with a surface of the optical component. The ALD coating includes a metal fluoride ALD coating having a metal different from calcium. The ALD coating can include other metal oxide or metalloid oxide ALD coating layers. The method for making the coated optical component includes depositing an atomic layer deposition (ALD) coating on a surface of the optical component, where the ALD coating can be a metalloid oxide, a metal oxide, a metal fluoride having a metal that is different from calcium, or combinations of these. Sulfur hexafluoride is used as a fluorine source in the ALD process.

Atomic layer deposition derived protective coatings for calcium fluoride optical components

An electronic device may have a hinge that allows the device to be flexed about a bend axis. A display may span the bend axis. To facilitate bending about the bend axis without damage, the display may include a display cover layer with a flexible portion. The flexible portion of the display cover layer may be interposed between first and second rigid portions of the display cover layer. The display cover layer may also include a layer with self-healing properties. The layer of self-healing material may be formed across the entire display cover layer or may be formed only in the flexible region of the display cover layer. The display cover layer may include a layer of elastomer in the flexible region of the display cover layer for increased flexibility. Self-healing may be initiated or expedited by externally applied heat, light, electric current, or other type of external stimulus.

Electronic devices with flexible display cover layers

According to at least one feature of the present disclosure, a method of forming a film of an optical element, includes: positioning a substantially transparent lens in a reactor chamber, wherein the lens defines a curved surface; exposing the lens to a first precursor comprising one of lanthanum or gadolinium such that the first precursor is deposited on the curved surface of the lens; exposing the first precursor on the curved surface to a first oxidizer such that the first precursor present on the curved surface of the lens reacts with the first oxidizer to form a high refractive index layer of the film; exposing the high refractive index layer to a second precursor such that the second precursor is deposited on the high refractive index layer; and exposing the second precursor on the high refractive index layer to a second oxidizer such that the second precursor present on the high refractive index layer reacts with the second oxidizer to form a low refractive index layer of the film.

Anti-reflective optical coatings and methods of forming the same

An electronic device has a foldable display. First and second portions of an electronic device housing for the device may be joined using hinge structures. A flexible display may overlap the first housing portion, the hinge structures, and the second housing portion. A layer such as a layer of sheet metal may be used in supporting the display and may overlap the hinge structures. The hinge structures may include gear teeth, belts, and/or other movement synchronization structures. The hinge structures may include members that move relative to each other during bending. The moving members may include bars and links with opposing curved bearing surfaces. Stop surfaces may prevent excessive rotation of the bars and links with respect to each other. The links may rotate about pivot points that lie within the thickness of the display without the hinge structure living within the thickness of the display.

Electronic devices having folding expandable displays

In some aspects, mobile devices with foldable and rollable displays can use a sensor to detect vertical acceleration with respect to the ground to determine if the mobile device has been dropped. If the sensor detects that the mobile device has been dropped the foldable device can fold or retract at least partially to afford protection from the fragile display from striking the ground. Even folding the display to an angle less than 180 degrees can afford some protection because the mobile device can strike edges of the mobile device instead of the display itself. In various embodiments, a rollable device can retract the display if predetermined acceleration limits are exceeded.

Self-retracting display device and techniques for protecting screen using drop detection

A foldable display device may have housing portions coupled by a hinge. The hinge may have a series of interconnected links. The links may be formed from interdigitated fingers in a friction clutch. The fingers or other portions of the links may be provided with crescent-shaped slots that receive pins. During folding of the device, the pins may slide along the crescent-shaped slots, thereby ensuring that adjacent links rotate relative to each other about a rotation axis that lies outside of the hinge and within a flexible display panel. Links may also be formed from link members with curved mating bearing surfaces that slide relative to each other as adjacent links are rotated relative to each other. A housing rotation synchronization mechanism may be formed using a set of gears that extends between the first and second housing portions.

Hinges for folding display devices

A foldable electronic device may bend about a bend axis. A foldable display panel may be configured to bend along the bend axis as the foldable device is folded. A display cover layer may overlap the display panel. The display panel may have an array of pixels configured to display an image viewable through the display cover layer. The display cover layer may be formed from a layer of glass. A recess may be formed in the layer of glass that runs parallel to the bend axis and that overlaps the bend axis. The recess forms a flexible locally thinned portion in the glass that allows the display cover layer to bend. A rough surface texture and polymer coating may be provided in the recess. The recess may have shallowly sloping walls.

Electronic devices with folding displays having textured flexible areas

In devices with flexible displays, multilayer adhesive stacks may be included. A multilayer adhesive may attach a flexible display panel to the display cover layer in an electronic device. Including multiple layers of adhesive in the adhesive stack (as opposed to a single layer) provides more degrees of freedom for the tuning and optimization of the properties of the adhesive stack. The multilayer adhesive stack therefore has better performance than if only a single layer of adhesive is used. The multilayer adhesive stack may include one or more layers of soft adhesive, hard adhesive, hard elastomer, hard polymer, and/or glass to optimize the mechanical and optical performance of the multilayer adhesive stack. Soft adhesive layers may be included to optimize lateral decoupling (e.g., during folding and unfolding) of the adhesive stack. Harder layers may be included to provide rigidity and prevent denting during impact events.

A method for forming a via in a glass article includes forming one or more cavities within a glass substrate by exposing the glass substrate to an etchant, the glass substrate including a glass cladding layer and a glass central core layer, where the glass cladding layer has an etch rate in the etchant that is different than an etch rate of the glass central core layer, and where the one or more cavities extend through the glass central core layer terminating at the glass cladding layer, depositing a metallic material within the one or more cavities, and removing the glass cladding layer.

Methods for making high density vias in a glass article

A flexible display in a foldable electronic device may have a display cover layer and display panel that bend around a bend axis. The display panel may have an array of pixels configured to display an image through the display cover layer. The pixels may be formed from thin-film display circuitry that is supported by a flexible display panel substrate. The flexible substrate may be supported by a display support plate that bends about the bend axis. The display may be configured to allow attachment of the display panel substrate to the display support plate while helping to prevent undesired localized deformation of the thin-film display circuitry.

Electronic devices with deformation-resistant displays

An optical element including an optically transparent lens which defines a curved surface having a steepness given by an R/# of from about 0.5 to about 1.0. A film is positioned on the curved surface. The film includes an index layer. A composite layer is positioned on the curved surface having a refractive index greater than the index layer. The composite layer includes HfOand AlO. The composite layer has a mole fraction X of HfO, wherein X is from about 0.05 to about 0.95 and a mole fraction of AlOin the composite layer is 1−X.

Curved surface films and methods of manufacturing the same

A fabric-based item may include fabric layers and other layers of material. An array of electrical components may be mounted in the fabric-based item. The electrical components may be mounted to a support structure such as a flexible printed circuit. The flexible printed circuit may have a mesh shape formed from an array of openings. Serpentine flexible printed circuit segments may extend between the openings. The electrical components may be light-emitting diodes or other electrical devices. Polymer with light-scattering particles or other materials may cover the electrical components. The flexible printed circuit may be laminated between fabric layers or other layers of material in the fabric-based item.
