Various methods, systems, and apparatuses, for optical switching are provided. For example, one wavelength selective switch (WSS) includes a plurality of optical ports wherein one or more optical ports are configured to receive one or more input optical beams the one or more input optical beams having a plurality of wavelength channels and wherein one or more of the optical ports are configured to receive one or more wavelength channels of the plurality of wavelength channels for output. The WSS also includes a polarization conditioning assembly, a polarization beam splitter assembly, a direction dependent polarization rotator, a polarization beam splitter, a grating, and a polarization modulator array having a plurality of polarizing modulation cells, each cell configured to independently change a polarization orientation of an optical beam passing through the cell.

One 2&#xd7;2 wavelength selective switch array includes a plurality of optical input ports configured to receive one or more optical input beams, and a plurality of optical output ports configured to receive one or more one or more optical output beams wherein the plurality of optical input ports and optical output ports form an array of 2&#xd7;2 optical port pairs; one or more optical conditioning and wavelength dispersion elements; a polarization modulator array having a plurality of polarizing modulation cells, each cell configured to independently change a polarization orientation of an optical beam passing through the cell and associated with a particular wavelength channel; and a polarization-selective beam-routing optical element configured to route each particular input beam to either a first output port or a second output port according to polarization orientation.

In one aspect, a wavelength selective switch includes one or more optical input ports; one or more optical output ports; a first optical wavelength dispersion element configured to separate the plurality of wavelength channels of the input optical beam; a second optical wavelength dispersion element configured to combine two or more separate optical beams each having one or more different wavelengths, into a combined beam having the plurality of wavelength channels; a polarization modulator array configured to independently change a polarization orientation of an optical beam passing through; optical components for directing optical beams corresponding to respective wavelength channels to different polarizing modulation cells; and a polarization beam splitter configured to route received optical beams to particular output paths according to polarization orientation.

A dispersion compensation system includes one or more etalons optically coupled in series. The optical path length is used to achieves the desired dispersion compensation. In one example, at least some of the etalons are tunable in OPL and have a non-tunable front reflective interface. The dispersion compensation system can be tuned, for example to compensate for different amounts of dispersion, different combinations of dispersion offset and dispersion slope and/or manufacturing variations. In another example, the etalons all have a non-tunable front reflective interface. The optical path length is selected to compensate for chromatic dispersion that varies from one wavelength channel to the next.

The instant invention provides an add/drop device including a wavelength filter, a quarter waveplate disposed on either side of the wavelength filter, and a polarizing beamsplitter disposed on either side of the quarter waveplates. Each polarizing beamsplitter has an input port and an output port for launching and receiving a beam of light having a known polarization. A polarization switch is optically coupled to each input/output port for selectably rotating the polarization of the input/output beams of light. Advantageously, the polarization switches, which work in cooperation with each other and the polarizing beam splitters, provide means for a non-moving parts add/drop device.

Interleaver/deinterleaver apparatuses for combining/separating optical channels are described. When operating as a deinterleaver, the interleaver/deinterleaver separates an optical signal (e.g. WDM signal) into subsets of optical signals (e.g. channels). In one embodiment, deinterleaving optical signals separates an optical signal into even and odd International Telecommunications Union (ITU) channels. The interleaver/deinterleavers may include isolator components to route optical signals to and from input/output ports. A variety of reflective elements, e.g. quarter wave mirrors, reflective prisms, etalons, can be used for double passing the signals through a birefringent crystal assembly.

A variable optical attenuator is described. A special profile blocker is rotated across a large angel (e.g., 180&deg; to 360&deg;) to provide a variable amount of attenuation. In one embodiment, the special profile blocker is an eccentrically driven wheel. The special profile blocker is driven by a stepper motor via a gear assembly. In one embodiment, the variable optical attenuator includes a beam splitter for the input and/or the output signal for monitoring of signal strength and/or feedback control of the attenuator.

The invention provides an optical attenuator having a pair of substantially parallel mirrors that attenuate an optical signal based, at least in part, on the rotation angle of the mirrors. When the pair or mirrors is in a predetermined position, an input optical signal is directed from an input port to an output port with a minimum insertion loss. As the pair of mirrors is rotated, the optical signal is shifted parallelly, which provides increased insertion loss and an attenuated signal at the output port. The pair of mirrors can be rotated, for example, with a stepper motor, or other device.
