Cooling arrangements are disclosed for solid state circuit breakers. In one arrangement, a MOV is disposed between two pulsating heat pipes. An IGCT is disposed on the other side of each pulsating heat pipe away from the MOV. In another arrangement, a bus bar is integral with a heat spreader disposed between a pulsating heat pipe and an IGCT.

Cooling of power semiconductors

A unique system may include a power absorber; an electrical machine coupled to the power absorber and operative to supply mechanical power to the power absorber; a drive coupled to the electrical machine and operative to supply electrical power to drive the electrical machine; and a controller communicatively coupled to the drive. The controller may be configured to execute program instructions to selectively vary a control voltage while maintaining a given torque output of the electrical machine, and to determine, based on varying the control voltage, a minimum current required for the electrical machine to maintain the given torque output.

A electromagnetic machine system includes a rotor and a stator positioned about the rotor. A current injection mechanism is coupled with windings of the stator and structured to inject electrical currents therein so as to change a flux distribution of a magnetic field produced by the stator. The injected currents may be harmonic currents. The rotor further includes an inductor positioned to interact with the magnetic field when the flux distribution is changed, to produce an electrical excitation current for exciting windings in the rotor. The machine system may be a synchronous motor or generator, and may be brushless. Applications of the current injection strategy to direct torque control and vector control are also disclosed.

A sliding contact assembly for a DC electrical outlet receives plug contacts of an electrical plug. The assembly includes sliding contact structure having a base and a plurality of electrical sliding contacts fixed to the base. A housing includes a first end wall having an internal top surface and second end wall opposing the first end wall. The second end wall has an internal bottom surface. The housing has a side wall structure defining an internal chamber between the top surface and the bottom surface. The sliding contact structure is disposed in the housing to be movable linearly within the chamber. A spring is disposed between the top surface of the housing and a surface of the base so that when the plug contacts are completely disconnected from the associated sliding contacts, the spring rapidly forces the sliding contacts away from the plug contacts, reducing arcing energy there-between.

Unique systems, methods, techniques and apparatuses of a power collection system are disclosed herein. One exemplary embodiment is an MVDC collection system coupled to a utility grid including a collection bus, a plurality of branches coupled to the collection bus, and a branch controller. Each of the plurality of branches include a semiconductor switch coupled to the collection bus, and a DC/DC converter coupled to the semiconductor switch and an LVDC power source. The branch controller configured to determine a fault condition is occurring within the MVDC collection system, determine the location of the fault condition, and isolate the fault condition using at least one of the semiconductor switches and the DC/DC converters.

Medium voltage direct current power collection systems and methods

One embodiment is a uninterruptable power supply (UPS) system including a utility disconnect switch (UDS) coupled with an input line and an output line and structured to selectably connect and disconnect the input line and the output line. The UDS includes a semiconductor switching device connected between the input line and the output line, a surge arrester coupled in parallel with the semiconductor switching device, a dynamic voltage balancing device and a static voltage balancing device which are coupled in parallel with the semiconductor switching device.

Fast utility disconnect switch for single conversion UPS

A resettable solid state fuse that automatically restores an interrupted circuit after an overcurrent event is cleared. The resettable solid state fuse can include one or more switching devices, such as, for example, a normally-on power semiconductor, and one or more positive temperature coefficient (PTC) resistive elements. The switching device is structured to extend the voltage rating of the resettable fuse, allowing the solid state resettable fuse to attain both a relatively elevated voltage rating and a relatively elevated electrical current rating while using a PTC resistive element. According to certain embodiments, the solid state resettable fuse can be tripped by a cascaded PTC resistive element, thereby providing a passive electronic device that can operate in the absence of electronic sensing, detection, and tripping, as well as without reliance on an auxiliary power supply.

A power converter includes an output converter having a 3-phase or higher output, an inductor coupled to the output converter and a switch device coupled to the inductor. The switch device charges the inductor via a DC input during a first stage of a switching cycle of the switch device. The output converter discharges the inductor to a load coupled to the 3-phase or higher output during a second stage of the switching cycle. The output converter includes a phase leg for each phase of the 3-phase or higher output, each phase leg having a first thyristor device connected in series with a second thyristor device. Each phase of the 3-phase or higher output originates between the first thyristor device and the second thyristor device of the corresponding phase leg.

One exemplary embodiment is method of operating an electrically excited synchronous machine (EESM) system. The system includes a converter operatively coupled with one or more stator windings, an exciter operatively coupled with one or more field windings, a controller operatively coupled with the converter and the exciter, and a power supply operatively coupled with the converter and the exciter. The controller determines whether a power supply fault condition exists and whether EESM system is operating in a motor mode or a generator mode. If the power supply fault condition exists and the EESM system is operating in the motor mode, entering one of a motor ride through control mode and a motor controlled braking control mode If the power supply fault condition exists and the EESM system is operating in the generator mode, entering one of a generator ride through control mode and a generator controlled braking control mode.

Technologies for providing DC arc protection in a DC socket include an electromagnet positioned in the DC socket configured to produce a magnetic field. The electromagnet is positioned to be adjacent to a contact region between one or more supply terminals of a DC socket and one or more prongs of a DC plug. As the DC plug is disconnected from the DC socket, a DC arc might form between one or more of the supply terminals and one or more of the prongs. The magnetic field produced by the electromagnet reduces the energy of the DC arc and reduces the time duration of the DC arc.

A power generation system includes at least one generator that generates a medium voltage direct current that has a positive DC voltage output and a negative DC voltage output. The system also provides a medium voltage DC (MVDC) cable system with a positive pole cable and a negative pole cable, wherein the positive pole cable is connected to the positive DC voltage output and the negative pole cable is connected to the negative DC voltage output. A substation is connected to the MVDC cable system and includes at least one DC/DC step-up converter to step-up the medium voltage direct current to a high voltage direct current.

A power generation system includes at least one generator having at least two sets of stator windings, an active rectifier comprising power cell based modular converters associated with each set of generator windings. Each set of windings is connected to an AC voltage side of the associated active rectifier, with each active rectifier having a positive DC voltage output and a negative DC voltage output. The DC voltage outputs of active rectifiers are connected to each other in series. A medium voltage DC (MVDC) collection network comprises positive pole cables and negative pole cables, wherein each positive pole cable is connected to the positive DC voltage output of a first active rectifier and each negative pole cable is connected to the negative DC voltage output of a last active rectifier. A substation receives the negative and positive pole cables of the MVDC collection network for further transformation and transmission.

The subject matter described herein includes an active compensatory augmented diode bridge rectifier system. According to one aspect, the system includes a generator unit configured to generate a current flow made up entirely of active current and a diode rectifier configured to receive the active current from the generator unit, to direct the active current to a connected power grid, and to receive a reactive current. The system further includes an active compensator configured to optimize the generator unit to produce the active current and to generate the reactive power used to facilitate the operation of the diode rectifier.
