The present invention is directed to curable compositions that comprise a non-porous substrate, one or more cyanoacrylate polymerization initiators and a prepolymer composition comprising at least one liquid cyanoacrylate monomer or mixture of such monomers (solid or liquid) and/or cyanoacrylate oligomers. The non-porous substrate is a collection of individual particulates that are not bound, bonded or fixed to one another. At least one initiator is deposited on the surface of the individual particulates to form a plurality of initiator carriers. The prepolymer composition receives the plurality of initiator carriers to begin a controlled and consistent polymerization or curing of the liquid cyanoacrylate monomer in order to produce a biocompatible adhesive composition for use on living tissue. The present invention also provides for methods of making and using and devices for such a curable compositions, particularly in treating living tissue by applying to living tissue a biocompatible adhesive composition.

Polymers having covalently bound antibiotic agents

A biocompatible biological component is provided comprising a membrane-mimetic surface film covering a substrate. Suitable substrates include hydrated substrates, e.g. hydrogels which may contain drugs for delivery to a patient through the membrane-mimetic film, or may be made up of cells, such as islet cells, for transplantation. The surface may present exposed bioactive molecules or moieties for binding to target molecules in vivo, for modulating host response when implanted into a patient (e.g. the surface may be antithrombogenic or antiinflammatory) and the surface may have pores of selected sizes to facilitate transport of substances therethrough. An optional hydrophilic cushion or spacer between the substrate and the membrane-mimetic surface allows transmembrane proteins to extend from the surface through the hydrophilic cushion, mimicking the structure of naturally-occurring cells. An alkylated layer directly beneath the membrane-mimetic surface facilates bonding of the surface to the remainder of the biological component. Alkyl chains may extend entirely through the hydrophilic cushion when present. To facilitate binding, the substrate may optionally be treated with a polyelectrolyte or alternating layers of oppositely-charged polyelectrolytes to facilitate charged binding of the membrane-mimetic film or alkylated layer beneath the membrane-mimetic film to the substrate. The membrane-mimetic film is preferably made by in situ polymerization of phospholipid vesicles.

Biological component comprising artificial membrane

A monomer composition comprising at least one polymerizable alkyl ester &#x3b1;-cyanoacrylate monomer. Specifically, the &#x3b1;-cyanoacrylate monomer is an alkyl ester &#x3b1;-cyanoacrylate monomer of the general formula having a spacer R1: n is from 2 to 12; R3 and R4 are each an alkyl group or a hydrogen, and at least one of R3 or R4 is an alkyl group (e.g. linear or branched, or cyclic) having from 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 carbon atoms; R2 is an alkyl group (e.g. linear or branched, or cyclic) having from 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 carbon atoms; and the combined number of carbon atoms (N) in the spacer R1 is at least n+1.

Absorbable &#x3b1;-cyanoacrylate compositions

A monomer composition comprising at least one polymerizable alkyl ester &#x3b1;-cyanoacrylate monomer. Specifically, the &#x3b1;-cyanoacrylate monomer is an alkyl ester &#x3b1;-cyanoacrylate monomer of the general formula having a spacer R1: wherein n is from 2 to 12; R3 and R4 are each an alkyl group or a hydrogen, and at least one of R3 or R4 is an alkyl group (e.g. linear or branched, or cyclic) having from 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 carbon atoms; R2 is an alkyl group (e.g. linear or branched, or cyclic) having from 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 carbon atoms; and the combined number of carbon atoms (N) in the spacer R1 is at least n+1.

The present Specification describes materials and methods which provide for improved performance of medical prostheses, including vascular graft material, artificial heart valves, and other implanted materials. The materials comprising bound thrombomodulin or a functionally equivalent derivative protein, provide for fewer undesirable side effects including inflammation, thromboses and neointimal hyperplasia.
