A magnesium-ion battery includes a solid, mechanically flexible polymer-based anode, a solid, mechanically flexible polymer-based cathode, and a polymer gel electrolyte in contact with the anode and the cathode. An electrode can include bismuth nanostructure powder and an electrolyte binder, or tungsten disulfide and an electrolyte binder.

Optically transmissive UV solar cells may be coupled to glass substrates, for example windows, in order to generate electricity while still providing suitable optical behavior for the window. The UV solar cells may be utilized to power electrochromic components coupled to the window to adjust or vary the transmissivity of the window. The UV solar cells may utilize a Schottky ZnO/ZnS heterojunction.

Disclosed herein is a composite prepared by dispersing silver flakes in a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), phosphoric acid (HPO), and poly(3,4-ethyl-ene-dioxythiophene) (PEDOT):poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PSS) polymer mixture. The polymer blend can provides conductive pathways between the silver flakes, leading to superior electrical properties even at large deformations.

Methods for measuring and/or mapping in-plane strain of a surface of a substrate. A grating is formed on at least a portion of the surface of the substrate. A laser is then used focused onto the grating to determine the strain on the surface by determining the variation of the grating wavelength due to the strain on the surface. The strain information is essentially carried by the grating, in terms of grating wavelength, because it varies according to the volume change of the underlying substrates. By scanning the surface grating with the small laser size, a high resolution strain map of the surface can be produced. The induced strain is related to the grating wavelength variation, which leads to the diffraction angle variation that is captured by the strain sensing measurements.

Methods for in-plane strain measurement of a substrate

An integrated inductor can be tunable via a control current which alters the magnetic flux density in a permeable magnetic material. The resulting inductor can be adjusted in-circuit, and may be suitable for applications such as dc-dc converters, RF circuits, or filters requiring operation at high frequencies and across wide bandwidths.

Described herein are diffraction gratings and methods for the manufacture thereof. One method comprises applying a force to a substrate to strain the substrate, disposing a thin film on at least a portion of the substrate, and reducing the force applied to the substrate, thereby causing the thin film to buckle.
